Turkey was a successful Muslim state because the Turkish military knew that Islam and civilized society are incompatible.

It's in the constitution - Ataturk had it written that it was the duty of the army to take back the country for the people every time islam was taking over



and of course with Erdogan, islam WAS taking over



Whether it is Ataturks constitution kicking in "as planned" / as per constitution  or a "coup" for power, we won't know for a while



This has happened 3 times in that 100yrs and the army kicked islam out and set up a new democracy and stepped out of the way



Oh islam ... you never fucking quit your lust for power, do you



If only we had Ataturk's wisdom re: islam we would not be in the mess we are in - we took it in with no escape clause

we have no way to know at this point if it is a coup by a part of the military

a group of the military doing their duty to protect the people from islam al la Ataturk's constitution provision



Curiously, the PM said "this is not a coup" .... which implies the latter  .. yet the majority party is heavy duty islamist so one would expect the PM leader of the majority party to be islamist himself ... dunno

He does have a "devout" base, as islamists won the last 2 elections



We may see a serious fight between his faction of the army and the group taking over for the people

Still, just as for Morsi (Muslim Brotherhood) , O'Islamist calls for people to "support Erdogan (the hard core islamist) the elected leader ... .oblivious of Turkey's constitution that orders the army to remove any islamist leadership

As for me, I've always been an Ataturk fan ... I thinks he's one of the sharpest leaders of the century ... and these army people are following his constitutional order as have 3 previous armies ... saving the country from fundies taking over

Ataturk was a great man who transformed the former Ottoman Empire into a modern and secular nation-state. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory, and women were given equal civil and political rights.



He encouraged the Turks to wear modern European clothes. He understood how antithetical Islam is to modernity. A great mind indeed and he influenced Asian leaders with large Islamist populations.

That statement I posted of his was legit btw - he really did say that streetcar thing which i cited above  ... he also more  recently said  .. paraphrasing .. "there is no moderate islam, there is only islam"

Ataturk knew Islamism(political Islam) or the belief that Islam should guide social and political as well as personal life was backward and illogical. He also knew Islam needs restrictions placed on it. I am sorry the coup was unsuccessful. Another step back to the Ottoman caliphate for Turkey.
