Formed 1966 in Oxford, Ohio, The Lemon Pipers are essentially remembered for one song - Green Tambourine. And what a song it is, having topped the charts in 1968. Some have described it as the first "bubblegum pop" chart topper. Well, I don't agree with its classification as "bubblegum".  IMHO, it's a one-of-a-kind tune that has held up very well with the passage of time. As a side note, they had a guitarist named Bill Bartlett whom I'll discuss elsewhere in another post. In the meantime, let's listen while he plays his green tambourine:

Amen.

I remember listening to this song on WCFL radio when I was a lad.

Formed in 1967, First Edition became Kenny Rogers & The First Edition in 1970. Though I never saw the group live, I did see Rogers live twice over the years. Released in 1969, this is one of my favorite songs by First Edition as seen in an appearance on The Smothers Brothers:

The Box Tops were formed 1967 in Memphis, Tennessee and had their biggest selling record that same year. "The Letter" went all the way to #1 in the USA and several other countries, as well.  This video is a hoot, too:

IMHO, it would be impossible to overstate The Animal's contribution to rock music. I saw Eric Burdon & The Animals years ago and he still had it. Formed in 1962, this is one of my favorites:

I previously posted a Left Banke hit called "Pretty Ballerina."  All in all they had two hits, but shoulda had more IMHO. Their sound became known as "baroque rock."  Formed in 1965, they were plagued with mismanagement. Oh well. This is their biggest hit:

Amen.
