Ezra Levant Appeals To Trudeau After Being Barred From UN Conference



Ezra Levant is hoping Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will go to bat for his conservative online publication The Rebel, after he says it was barred from a United Nations climate conference.



Levant says The Rebel applied for credentials for three journalists to attend the UN climate conference known as COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco, in November.



The application was made a month ago and he didn't expect a problem, he says, because thousands of credentials are typically issued.



But when the response came about two weeks ago, it stated that the application was denied because credentials aren't issued for advocacy media outlets, he says.



Nicholas Nuttall, a spokesman for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Conference, said the organization tries hard to make sure those who get accreditation are genuine media rather than advocacy groups or non-governmental organizations pretending they're media.



"We had never heard of Rebel Media before but we looked at their website and, to be honest, they seemed to be in the bracket of being something of a one person band espousing an individual's view of the world rather than being a serious media operation,'' Nuttall said in an email.



"Some of the headlines seemed to verge on extremism as well.''

I hope they do. This makes the UN look like an organization that only likes yes men journalism. They can't handle scrutiny.

The United Nations has refused to accredit three Canadian journalists from TheRebel.media, blacklisting us from covering the upcoming global warming conference in Marrakech, Morocco.



The three banned journalists are full-time professionals: Sheila Gunn Reid, the Rebel's Alberta bureau chief and bestselling author; Meaghan MacSween, a producer, formerly with Global News and Sun News Network; and Alex Jones, a cameraman and editor, also formerly of Sun News Network.

The one-line excuse offered by the UN is that we are "advocacy journalists", a term they do not define and has, not to our knowledge, been used by the UN before.



Perhaps the UN means "opinion journalists" — though, how that would apply to Alex our cameraman is uncertain. But opinion journalism is a legitimate type of journalism, and comprised a large proportion of the 3,000 journalists who covered last year's UN global warming conference in France, and will cover this year's in Morocco. The most striking video clip of the Paris conference was when an international agreement was finally announced and the media room burst into applause and cheering, some actually jumping for joy. You know, the room filled with objective reporters.





But if we are indeed being blacklisted because we hold a point of view, how can the UN approve journalists who are literally paid propagandists for authoritarian regimes, like China's Xinhua and CCTV, and even Qatar's Al Jazeera and Russia's RT?



Many independent western media have an explicit advocacy orientation too, especially on the subject of global warming, including online outlets like Vice, Huffington Post and Buzzfeed.



Canada's largest newspaper, the Toronto Star, has an advocacy mission hard-wired into its newsroom, called the Atkinson Principles. The Star recently published a series of advocacy articles about global warming — not marked as ads — paid for by the Tides Foundation, a San Francisco-based lobby group that bankrolls global warming activism. That was PR for a lobby group. But the Star is accredited for Marrakech.



The UN even welcomes global warming lobby groups, including "community organizers" posing as journalists. Greenpeace-style blogs, like Canada's own DeSmog Blog attend in full advocacy mode, as well as other small websites like The Tyee and the Vancouver Observer, both supported by Tides.



And that's all fine: The United Nations' own Declaration of Human Rights says "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."



The UN is breaking its own rules by denying us those same rights. Our journalists aren't being kept out because they have an opinion. They're being kept out because they have the wrong opinion.



This isn't the first time our reporters have faced this. Earlier this year, when Sheila Gunn Reid went to a press conference with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, she was met by an armed sheriff blocking her from the Alberta Legislature, followed up by a letter from Alberta's Justice Department banning all Rebel staff from all government property in perpetuity. It was a scandal, and Notley backed down in the face of national condemnation.



But unlike Notley, the UN bureaucrats who have blacklisted us are anonymous. And they wouldn't have to worry about stuffy things like democratic accountability. The UN has not even replied to our lawyer's polite requests for an explanation. Three non-partisan journalism NGOs — PEN Canada, The Canadian Association of Journalists and Canadian Journalists for Free Expression — have each written letters to the UN in support of our application. They have been ignored as well.



Perhaps the Canadian government can help. The official name of the Marrakech meeting is a Conference of the Parties, and the Canadian government is one of the parties. Would Trudeau and Catherine McKenna, the environment minister, demand that the UN end its censorship of Canadian citizens?



I'm not optimistic. McKenna herself has "blocked" me on Twitter. So has Gerald Butts, Trudeau's chief of staff. Two years ago, when I was a Sun News Network host, Trudeau's team said it would boycott Sun reporters after I had insulted the late Pierre Trudeau on my TV show. We cannot know if it was politicians here who requested the UN ban us, but I'm curious how the UN singled us out — a new, small online news outlet, amongst all the thousands of accreditation requests from around the world. Unfortunately, the UN won't answer our lawyer's request for an explanation.

We're sending our journalists to Marrakech no matter what. Even if we have to stand outside and shout questions at the elites as they arrive in their fossil-fuel-burning limousines.



What a perfect symbol of the UN and the global warming debate: intolerant of dissent, arrogant and undemocratic. And what sad proof that the journalists who will be attending the Marrakech conference are those that are "UN-approved".
