I don't read between the lines. I read facts.

There are already a few thousand Syrian refugees in Australia. They're mostly Muslim.

QuoteAustralia fifth in list of world's most welcoming refugee destinations, Amnesty International says

The Refugees Welcome Index surveyed 27,000 people to measure public levels of acceptance of refugees in 27 countries.

The index ranked nations on a sliding scale of how willing citizens said they were to welcome refugees into their homes, neighbourhoods, cities, towns or villages and countries.

It found that 71 per cent of Australians believed that the Federal Government should do more to help refugees fleeing war or persecution,

"Australia has a long history of welcoming refugees and the overwhelming approval of the decision to accept 12,000 Syrian refugees is testament to that," Amnesty International refugee coordinator Doctor Graham Thom said.

China, Germany, Britain and Canada were ranked as the world's most welcoming to refugees.

^That is a deeply flawed survey and it says China is the most welcoming for refugees. China has not accepted large numbers of refugees since Vietnam.

QuoteHowever, there also could be a more mundane reason too: a glitchy translation. The first two questions on the Chinese phone-administered questionnaire specifically mention refugees fleeing "war or persecution." The third doesn't; it merely asks what degree of accommodation the respondent would be willing to offer refugees.

In addition, only in the first question—one about whether refugees should be able to flee to other countries to escape conflict and persecution—does the questioner imply anything about refugees fleeing specifically to other countries.

This last point is significant because the word that GlobeScan, the consultancy who conducted the research, used to in its phone-administered survey, 难民 (nanmin), literally means "person displaced by calamity"—without regard to nationality. So it can mean a person fleeing, say, Syria. Or, just as easily, the word might refer to someone driven out of their home within China (what humanitarians call "internally displaced people," or IDPs). For this reason, Chinese-language media often make the distinction between "international refugees" and "domestic refugees. And thanks to both its size and the tragic frequency of natural disasters, China just happens to have a lot of those latter.

Fash, these 'refugees' are nothing but trouble.  The vast majority of them are economic migrants......

Its a shame Europe is guilt tripped so easily into accepting them, when other countries just point blank refuse.

This is absolutely true that too many so called refugees are economic migrants.

I am not sure where I stand on this issue. On the one hand, I do not want to deny anyone fleeing for their lives anyone TEMPORARY sanctuary. But, I can certainly understand why there are objections to making them permanent residents and eventually citizens. They should go home and apply like everyone else.

Exactly, it is grossly unfair to legit immigrants. They get financial assistance too ffs.

Ex-fucking-zactly!!!

That is the view of MOST people in the West.

Give them shelter and respite, but NOT citizenship. As soon as their country is placated and the government acknowledges it will receive tham back without penalty and persecution, home they go. As happened during the Balkan War with the Kosovos. They were re-patriated as soon as the war concluded.

True, there may be some circumstances whereby their home country never becomes safe for them (by example, North Korea, Cuba, Iran and some African basket case countries) and in that case we are stuck with them, but that's fine.

That's what separates us from the barbarians.

Weren't Kosovars and other former Yugoslavians repatriated after the various Balkans wars? I know some Balkans refugees in my area. Isn't the owner of VF a refugee from that part of Europe? If they went home, I believe it was voluntary.

Let's face it, we do not have refugees in Canada. What we refer to as refugees are really fast tracked, tax payer helped insufficiently vetted immigrants who would not qualify if they applied as skilled immigrants.

The Kosovos were largely repatriated after the war. I presume some remained on humanitarian grounds based on health and welfare issues. But most were sent home.

Vesna (the owner of VF) is a Serbian, not a Kosovar. I don't know the circumstances of her relocation to Canada, but I suspect she fled the war. Despite her stated love for Serbia, socialism and the old Soviet system, she chose to live in Canada.
