A plan to build a liquid natural gas liquefaction and export facility in Port Edward, B.C., will not go ahead.

A release from Pacific NorthWest LNG said the decision to cancel the $36-billion project was made after "a careful and total review of the project amid changes in market conditions."

Pacific NorthWest LNG is majority owned by Petronas, a Malaysian oil and gas company.

Anuar Taib, chair of the Pacific NorthWest LNG board, wrote that "prolonged depressed prices and shifts in the energy industry have led us to this decision."

The proposed project was to build an LNG export facility on Lelu Island in the district of Port Edward, in northwest B.C.

Speaking at a news conference, B.C. Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Michelle Mungall said the project was "uneconomical to move forward. We respect the company's decision."

Mungall denied that the decision was related to B.C.'s new NDP government's position on LNG projects.

It takes so long for major resource projects to come online in this country that Asians get frustrated waiting for us they find  suppliers who really want their business.

It's a big disappointment, no doubt about it. However, it's not a surprise.

There's not a lot of positive news for good jobs in this country..

Most of the jobs being created it seems are low quality and all too often not full time.

Petronas announces the cancellation of the massive project shortly after an anti-resource development regime takes over the government. Coincidence? Hardly.

They don't want good jobs and prosperity. Give it to the Russians and the muslimes.

Whatever GG, I remember when the NDP stood up for working people.

That was a while ago.

If you folks wanna blame those who voted for someone other than Christy Clark and her BC Liberal Party, then go ahead, Blame me. I'm to blame and I take full responsibility for the cancellation of the project.

Same time, for those of us who actually live here, you might understand why Clark lost. She was so busy pushing the corporate line of fat profits, how good things were for everyone, but failing to see the Big Picture. She/They weren't addressing other pressing issues. I'd voted for that and her platform last time, but not this time 'round.

You see, we have a lot of social problems in the province, such as homelessness and drug addiction, which Clark and her party were unwilling to address. It's disheartening to see your friends pushed out of affordable housing, only to see them paying 40% more than the last place they lived in.

And the problem of Drug Addiction has a lot to do with homelessness, because people living on the street shoot up and engage in this self-destructive risky behaviours in large part, because they have no place to go. These scenes are typical of what goes on here in the more disadvantaged parts of our large cities, and under the BC Liberals, the problem was getting worse and worse:

Now I know many of you are boo hooing and mourning the loss of your beloved Christy Clark. And Oh dear, your share prices, stock portfolio and RRSP's will take sucha Hit! Chicken Little...the Sky is Falling! As if 17 years of Greedy Guts, Screw the Middle Class isn't enough. Goodness Gracious...the party of Greed wants even more! Not 95%, but the whole friggin' pie! 100% for themselves.

Same time, I agree with many of you somewhat, that the NDP may have chased out Petronas with their heavy handed talk. This I didn't support. But instead of courting them, NDP Premier John Horgan was badgering them, and of course, they decided to pull the plug.  I don't support their all out ban on Pipelines, nor shutting down Site C. But then again, I'm not a socialist, but a liberal. Still, the previous NDP administrations didn't try to shut down the Natural Resource Sector, and even encouraged it.

I'm not really a New Democrat nor a Green, but I hope for the short time they are in power, that they manage to build at least 10,000 new units to address the housing shortage and drug addiction problems here.  I agree that socialist governments or policies shouldn't always be the norm. However, in stressed times and social conditions, sometimes it's the medicine which is needed to address these problems.

Why do you keep posting your uninformed political opinions on the main board? I guess it doesn't matter much now.

You're celebrating a major development that would have created tens of thousands of good blue collar jobs is toast. And this new prog BC government has just begun their war on working people. The twinning of Transmountain is next.

Will the last blue collar job forced out of BC please lock the doors

Well, how is seoulbro's comments that the cancellation of the project has to do with the new NDP government any different?

Aren't his statements views with regards to this issue also political?

I'm only commenting on it, because he did and replying to his befuddlement as to why the BC voter didn't choose BC Liberal/Christy Clark.

Anyways, I did state that NDP Premier John Horgan and his Green Party partner were too heavy handed on the resource sector, which I didn't agree with. Even Left Leaning Justin Trudeau doesn't agree with their approach and he would've done his utmost to woo Petronas had he been the Premier of this province.

Altho I voted NDP, I'm no New Democrat. I just wanted them to fix the housing situation. And perhaps it's fitting that they were granted a minority rather than a majority given their iffy policies. If they don't/can't perform, and their policies prove to be a disaster, then by all means, they should get turfed from power.

Same time, many people here are sick of 17 years straight of the same party being in power. It was beginning to feel like a dictatorship. And if another party gets in, and stays there for just 2-3 years, so what? At least 1 term or less of NDP gave us a break from this dictatorship. Anyways, the BC Libs, or a reformed version of them will likely get back in and I doubt that the NDP tenure will last for any appreciable length in time. Something will happen, the government will fall, and there will be another election within a few years.

The difference between Seoul's comments and yours is that he was right. The new regime in BC has declared war on blue collar jobs. They only represent wealthy progs who don't need to work and don't want anyone else to.

I don't care who BC votes for. I live in Manitoba. But, I do care that Canadian jobs are being decimated by this new BC government.

Joe does not need the real mortgage paying jobs Pacific LNG and TMX would provide. He has an imaginary job driving a limo.

The dippers are good for exports. Everywhere they are or have been in power recently, good jobs, investment and human capital are exported. :laugh3:

We were having too much fun to concern ourselves with BC politics.
