It's a good-news oil story that dogmatic, rigid, save-the-planet types refuse to hear.



Imperial Oil's proposed new Aspen oilsands project, if approved, will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25% compared to current underground extraction methods. The water currently needed would be replaced by recyclable solvents.



More proof that the global-warming can be thwarted with low-emission energy sources of ALL kinds, not only wind, solar and hydro. Hundreds of thousands of Alberta oilpatch jobs need not be sacrificed.

The leader of an oilfield technology company hopes a $10-million grant announced Friday will help microwaves replace steam as a key way to extract bitumen from the oilsands.



"(This) is a potential game-changer for Alberta's oil industry," Geoff Clark, chief executive of Acceleware, said Friday following a news conference at C-FER Technologies in southeast Edmonton.



"You have no external water (involved), that's one benefit. You have far less surface disruption. You don't have big water storage and a steam plant. It's also more energy efficient."



The Calgary-based firm will put the money toward completing a commercial field test in northern Alberta's oilsands of the technology, which uses radio waves to heat water found naturally underground until the thick hydrocarbon flows.



"It's really analogous to putting a microwave oven in the oilsands."



Clark expects to expand his 25-person workforce by three to five employees over the next year to work on the project, once a deal is signed with at least one producer, which should take about 18 months to complete.



The technology can also be used at heavy oil formations.



The downturn in the oil industry has actually been good for advancing the technology, because companies have more time to look at money-saving innovations and the equipment is cheaper to buy and operate, he said.



"If it was $100 oil, I'm not sure we could get their attention."



Acceleware was one of 11 Alberta companies that received joint federal and provincial grants worth a total of $28.8 million for projects focused on innovative clean energy and water technologies.



"The fast-growing clean technology sector is a field where Canada stands to dominate," federal Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi said Friday.



"Our government believes economic growth and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand. We don't have to make this false choice of doing one or the other."



Grants went to firms working in such areas as improving desalination and recycling of water used for oil production, increasing the energy efficiency of large buildings and cutting methane emissions.



Alberta Labour Minister Christina Gray said the work could generate up to 300 jobs.



"This will help reduce greenhouse gases, help create jobs and move technology that's very promising into commercialization," she said.

There is no reason why oil and natural gas cannot be carbon neutral. We have the technology right now to make that a reality. There is no reason why we cannot be energy self-sufficient and export our energy instead of importing finite rare earth metals and useless wind turbines that require massive amounts of land to produce diffuse energy.



Pipeline company vows to reduce its GHG emissions by 35% by 2030, hit zero by 2050



CALGARY – Enbridge Inc., the operator of the largest crude oil pipeline network in North America, says it will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions intensity to net zero by 2050.



The Calgary-based company's pledge on Friday puts it in a growing club of parties making the 2050 pledge that includes the Canadian government, Vancouver-based miner Teck Resources Ltd., oilsands producer Cenovus Energy Inc. and international oil companies like Repsol, to name a few.



Enbridge is also aiming to reduce emission intensity by 35 per cent by 2030 compared with 2018.



He outlined four ways for the company to reduce its Scope 1 direct emissions from owned or controlled sources and Scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased energy and other products.



They include modernizing equipment, applying technology to reduce emissions and consumption, using lower carbon sources of fuel for pumps and compressors, self-powering facilities with solar arrays and investing in "nature-based offsets."



On the call, Enbridge said it is weeks away from getting the final permits it needs to construct its Line 3 replacement oil pipeline through Minnesota, estimating construction time of six to nine months when they are in hand.



Presidential candidate Joe Biden has pledged to cancel the presidential permit for the rival Keystone XL pipeline if he is declared the winner but Vern Yu, Enbridge's president of liquids pipelines, said he's not worried Line 3 will be affected.



"We should remind you that under the prior (Obama) administration, where Mr. Biden was the vice-president, we were able to get all of our cross-border permits," he said on the call.

Wind power needs 400 times more land than nuclear for example. Wind power also needs more than 10 times as much materials such as concrete and steel as nuclear per TWh. Adding that wind power is an unreliable energy source that needs backup which increase the energy cost go up, I personally have a difficult time to see the benefits with wind power.

CASPER, Wyo. — The Bureau of Land Management have issued a decision allowing the development of 5,000 new oil and natural gas wells in Converse County.



"The project is expected to generate roughly 8,000 jobs and approximately $18 to $28 billion in federal revenues," the BLM said in a Wednesday press release announcing the decision.



Governor Mark Gordon praised the decision.



"It establishes what has been my goal from the beginning– to provide actual year-round drilling opportunities," Gordon said. "Providing companies the flexibility to make long-term, consistent plans that are not limited by a blanket drilling window makes a big difference in cost and efficiency."



"This ROD (record of decision) sets the framework for hundreds of jobs for Wyoming and ensures proper safeguards for the protection of our wildlife in the project area. It is an example that oil and gas operations and wildlife can and do co-exist in Wyoming."



Wyoming's U.S. Senator Mike Enzi said the project could be a boost to Wyoming's economiy.



"It is important that we continue the responsible development of our public lands so projects like this can strengthen our country and benefit the American people," Enzi added.



Wyoming's U.S. Senator John Barrasso also praised the decision.



"The Converse County Oil and Gas Project is estimated to bring thousands of jobs and substantial revenue to our state," Barrasso said. It's the result of years of hard work and collaboration at the local, state and federal level. I'm pleased we can finally get this important Wyoming energy project up and running."



Wyoming's U.S. Representative Liz Cheney said the project could help the state recover from impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.



"We are proud of our state's fossil fuels and recognize that this project represents a much-needed source of jobs, tax revenue, and economic growth that will serve Wyoming families for generations to come," Cheney added.



Development of the wells would still require site-specific review and approval before construction can begin.

Joule Bergerson of the University of Calgary said emissions from oil production could be cut by almost a quarter if oil-producing countries adopted regulations similar to Canada's that limit the amount of gas flared or vented into the air.



"It could make quite a bit of difference," said Bergerson, a co-author of a paper funded by Canada's Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and published in the journal Science.

"Who spends the most on the environment?" the answer, provincially, is Alberta. Between 2008 and 2019, Alberta spent $20.1 billion, or 17.1 per cent of all environmental expenditures by all provinces. That's high, given its population (in 2019 for example) was just 11.7 per cent of the ten-province population total.



On the opposite end is Quebec. Between 2008 and 2019, Quebec spent less than many provinces in most years and always less than Alberta. For instance, Quebec's per capita spending ranged from $179 per person in 2008 to $273 in 2019. That was lower than the Maritimes, Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia in most years.



As for Alberta-Quebec comparisons, Alberta's per capita environmental spending ranged from a "low" of $334 in 2010 to a high of $653 per person in 2016, far higher than Quebec in those and other years. More broadly, per person, Alberta outspent the (other) nine-province average in every year since 2008. The range was 41 per cent to 180 per cent more depending on the year.



Turning now to industry spending, with only partial data available (Statistics Canada collects the data only every second year), between 2006 and 2018, Canada's oil and gas sector spent $28.1 billion on environmental protection, capital and operating expenses combined.



Here's how that compares to other major industries: electric power generation ($6.3 billion); mining and quarrying ($6.2 billion); primary metal manufacturing ($6.1 billion) and chemical manufacturing ($3 billion). A variety of other industries with individually smaller expenditures collectively spent $18 billion in total according to Statistic Canada.



In other words, of the $67.7 billion in environmental spending between 2006 and 2018, and even with "gap" years in the data, the oil and gas sector spent $28.1 billion or 41.5 per cent. All other industries combined spent $39.6 billion, or 58.5 per cent.
