Recent studies have sparked a controversy by suggesting that an unusually large number of African Americans possess a gene that is linked with violent behavior. The gene contributes to the regulation of the amounts of monoamine oxidase in the individual's brain. This enzyme affects levels of neurotransmitters that are known to play an important role in modulating emotion and behavior, such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.



There are different versions of this gene, and each version contributes to differences in the amount of monoamine oxidase the individual's brain is likely to have. This is because the difference in these versions has to do with differences in the number of times a specific section for its promoter region appears. The three repeat alleles lead to unusually low levels of the enzyme, and the two repeat alleles lead to lower levels yet.





The early 1990s saw an explosion in the research of the role monoamine oxidase plays in the brain after the study of a family with a rare mutation had an extremely high number of violent criminals. The mutation this family had led to very low levels of monoamine oxidase and low IQs. It came to be known as "Brunner's syndrome" after H.G. Brunner, the researcher who discovered the gene. Along with his team of researchers, they authored the paper "X-Linked Borderline Mental Retardation with Prominent Behavioral Disturbance: Phenotype, Genetic Localization, and Evidence for Disturbed Monoamine Metabolism."

The MAOA gene which influences how much dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin a person has, via the actions of monoamine oxidase A, which breaks them down. (Note that serotonin could roughly be described as liquid happiness, norepinephrine as adrenaline and dopamine as liquid addiction.) This gene was brought to light by a family of infamous, white, Dutch criminals.

Cadherin 13 (CDH13) which has been associated with the inclination for substance abuse and ADHD. It plays a role in vascular and nervous system regulation.



A study, in pasty white Finland, of 900 offenders, found the most violent offenders had this genetic combination more often than non-violent offenders. The 78 prisoners with the combination had committed very many more homicides or attempts than a random control group of prisoners.



A person with this combination may create normal amounts of the neurotransmitters but cannot break them down. Many common psychiatric drugs are reuptake inhibitors - they keep neurotransmitters around longer. So, these men have a natural version of those meds and that means as excitement, novelty and risk builds they experience a chemical mania because they can't break down the mind's own drugs.



Every population on the planet contains this genetic combination. There is some variation - 34% of white European men have it, maybe 58% of African men, Polynesian Maori come in at 56%, but did you know that 56% of mainland Chinese males and 61% of Taiwanese men also share these genetic variants?



Africa is the wellspring of all human genes and still has more genetic variety than any other place. So, it would appear that the original norm was for this genetic combination to exist in about 1 out of 2 human men. The pioneers that left Africa to settle the rest of the world were, we presume, normal.



As they spread, we would expect the percentage to vary up and down as the local circumstances encouraged deadly violence among breeding age men, leaving quieter fellows to get the girls. If "white" men have it less often, it suggests higher rates of murders in their past. If some Asian men have it more often, it might be due to social systems that reduced the fuel for such crimes, leaving the sexy and dangerous bad boys to get the girls.



In any case, lower IQ (often due to poor nutrition), childhood mistreatment, alcohol and amphetamines all act to increase the negative expressions of this genetic combination. A tea-totaling man, even with the so-called warrior gene, from a reliable home might only be a good business person, coach and public speaker. And his outside could look like any of us humans.

I would like to add, this seems to be a broader ape problem. In all animal species lethal violence only accounts for .3% of deaths, on average. Among primate ancestor species, rodents and hares the rate of lethal violence increases to 1%. With primates, apes, humans and tree shrews the rate of intraspecies killing is above 2%.

Let's apply the logic of the premise. If you are black, you are pre-disposed to violence. Thus, it follows, if you are pre-disposed to violence you are more likely to be black.
