Angry White Male

I knew a guy that went through that.  What I was implying, was that you're not doing manual labour on the ground for 18 months before you even enter the cab.  Obviously there will training, but you're not laying track for 18 months.

You mean lining switches? Depending on the terminal you work out of you could be doing that for your entire career. Some people like yard assignments because it's a more regular schedule even though it doesn't pay as well as trips.

Dinky stated in Australia you had to do manual ground work for 18 months before even entering the cab.  I state that we don't do that here.

How do you not enter the cab? Even with yard assignments you have to  move the power to different tracks. And then there are transfers. You ride in the yard switcher even when using belt packs.

I think what he/she means is that it takes 18 months to operate the power. At CN and CP you need a minimum of two years as a qualified conductor to be selected for hoghead training.

I don't know...  ask Dinky!

Quote from: "Dinky Dianna"Required 18 months of doing the crappy jobs on the ground before I'd get trained on the diesels.

Yeah, cos Dinky won't ever try to swerve you...

Sounds about right for what was going on there and yes, I meant to be licenced and paid for operating the diesel.

I didn't want to put that kind of time in myself, scurrying around the tracks in the rain, sleet, or heat, on lesser income to be slowly trained elsewhere. Even when the person is accredited, the income was ok but not flash.

I was happy for the experience and the guys let me accelerate and slow down a few times so I got the taste without having to change careers.

Oh, and Bricktop: shuddup!

Hoghead. ac_toofunny It sounds like a derogatory term for locomotive engineers.
