Of course, I'm fully aware that none of you philistines have any interest in the spectacular and exciting realm of motor sport, but just as I will gradually change your minds on gun control, so shall I convert you into dedicated rev heads. Images from the newest racing circuit in the world...and the second longest circuit. Tailem Bend, South Australia.

I always find it amazing how petrol cars just keeps on improving and coming out with new stuff and technology despite the laws of science and physics can never change, I just don't get it at all, the principle and way how the way a piston engine works is still the same but cars just keep getting faster and faster with still good fuel efficiency.  ac_cool

Cars need to be slowed these days, because the power they can generate from even 1.6 litre engines is frightening.

Our friend who was racing that day (the black MG sports car in one of the images above) ran a standard 1.8 litre MG engine, but heavily modified, and was pulling nearly 200km/h on the main straight. MG's were never really known for their speed and power in standard trim.

Zetsu

Lol I just dun get it how they can reach 200km per hr with just a 1.8L engine.  And have to hand it to those scientist and engineers that build and tune these amazing sports cars.  I mean they just blows my mind way with all these high precision tech and new innovations. ac_cool

I asked.

The camshaft has been modified to allow higher revs...it now goes to 6000rpm. Triple Weber carburretors. A fancy exhaust system. Special block and pistons. So its kind of a granpa's axe kind of car.

You can thank Electronic Control for much of these improvements.  There's just so much a carburetor could do.

And the newest trend is small engines equipped with a turbo.  Power when you need it, with efficiency when you don't.  I expect to see more and more small displacement engines running a turbo in the future...

Zetsu

Pretty interesting to find out  ac_cool , I have to admit at first I was leaning towards to purchasing an electric car for it's fast acceleration and like it features instant torque, but now I'm kinda stuck between on which to choose, lol.

I would personally stay away from any electric vehicle.

If you want power and economy, a small displacement gasoline engine fitted with a turbo is what you need!  With a turbo, you'll have a nice torque range.

There are quite a few new vehicles made these days that offer this platform.

Bricktop

Daughter just bought a Suzuki Sport. 1.4 litre turbo.

Its a pocket rocket.

Angry White Male

Yes, cars like this are probably the way of the future.  Electric is over-rated, and useless if distance traveled is long.  Hybrids come at an expense, can be very costly to repair if out of warranty, and nobody can tell me all those battery stacks used are made using processes that are 100% 'tree hugger' friendly...  Not to mention some places still use coal-fired electrical generating plants, but the tree huggers never think that far ahead anyhow.

Turbos solve the problem of small engines lacking power and torque, and when not needed the turbo can spool back down ensuring economical operation.  Commercial rigs like mine have used turbos for decades, just for this very reason.

Blazor

My son wants turbo lol, he needs to stay away from that, lil fuckin' Speed Racer lol.

I remember one time, a guy had a Pinto engine, in a Mercury Sable, with a turbo hooked to it, and MAN that thing would haul ass! A PINTO engine!

Latest I've heard, is this years newly redesigned Jeep Wrangler model, has 3 engine options. A V6, a 4 banger with turbo, and a diesel.
I've come here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum.

Bricktop

My Landie is a turbo diesel. Tons of whoomph.
