I own a VW, a 2015 Jetta. I have never seen that model before.

I'm thinking I got confused with an ex War Jeep, and not a VW.



Probably jumped the gun on that.



I do however remember clearly that my newlywed parents DID buy a yellow Saab with novel heated seats.... because my mother was pregnant at the time with me and they slid off the road, flipped upside down onto a frozen lake, and my dad's case of cherished beer busted through the window and kept sliding towards the centre until it broke through the ice.



I cannot forget that story.  He was so dirty about the beer.  ac_biggrin

I have never seen a VW like that..



Looks really similar to the Kubelwagen.

They were sold here in the US in the 70s thru the early 80s. I don't think they were very popular.



The model was know as the "Thing"...



And yes it was basically a rehashed modernized version of the WWII era Kubelwagon.
