Three things birds have got to have...  bit of green like winter grass and swisschard (silverbeet)... SAND (and absolute must) and wood to chew up.

The 4th - Very clean water and a dish to have a bath in.

Even though vividly coloured, you get an idea of how difficult they can be to spot in the bush.

Another rosella from a different angle.

It's a yellow-throat minor. I'm chuffed to say the least. I'm completely exhausted but have got enough shots of birds, trees, wildflowers and nifty dilapidated homesteads.

This is a variety known as the crimson rosella.

That is the most common variety in pet stores in Canada.

Bricktop

They are very beautiful. The blue is electric in bright sunlight.

I guess we're fortunate that it is us that lives in a cage, and we get to see them in the wild.

Bricktop

This one shows the blue a little better.

Bricktop

As does this one. Hard to believe its the same bird with the variety of shades and patterns from front to rear.

That is a beautiful creature. Just like the macaws in Central America.

You guys have all these colorful birds in the wild? Like in your backyard and local park? Here I just get boring pigeons, crows, and seagulls.

Oh, I know TheVancouverGuy..

If I lived where Bricktop does bird watching would be my main hobby.

Most of these are taken in or from my back yard...although we back on to bushland. Some were taken in a friends back yard.

But yes, these are all birds in the wild, and even in the suburbs. In fact, Rosellas are more likely in areas close to cities than in remote areas. They got their name from the early settlers, who established a small village called Rose Hill, near Sydney, and which is now a suburb of Sydney.

The new colonists called the birds Rose Hill'ers, which became Rosellas.
