Because of their eccentric antics, Australians that act foolishly or outrageously are called "galahs", more in jest than as a serious slur.

Quote from: "Bricktop"I actually concur regarding the widespread use of plastic in our consumer driven society...but moreso in countries that care nothing for the environment.

I don't know about WA, but SA has a filtration system for drainage that catches a lot of the discarded material before it hits the ocean. Not all...but most. I would be amazed if WA was any different.

But 90% or MORE of the plastic debris in the ocean comes from Africa and Asia, where countries just flush their crap into the sea and assume mother nature will somehow deal with it.

In the meantime, package makers continue to pump of megatons of plastic cups, boxes, packaging and utensils FULL in the knowledge that their crap will be dumped for centuries on the planet. Instead of the UN trying to control immigration laws on sovereign nations, it should be imposing laws on plastic product manufacturers that enforce a principle of "you make it...you dispose of it"...and watch how quickly alternative materials become implemented.

Corporations, governments and the producers themselves know full well that disposable plastic implements will end up covering the planet sooner rather than later. It's time the polluters themselves...NOT the end user...took action.

I  read that on the main board..

And Our prime minister wants to phase out plastic straws in Canada because too much plastic is ending up in the oceans even though we are not causing, we must change our habits.

Such beautiful creatures..

What kind of tree is that?

Bricktop

Yes, they're a very lovely bird. Many were kept as pets years ago, because they could be tamed and would learn to talk. Thankfully, keeping them in cages is illegal now. The tree is an almond tree. In the land behind us are the remnants of an almond grove. Galahs LOVE almonds, but they are not ripe as yet.

Almonds off the tree are very tasty, but those pigs with wings will get them long before we will be able to harvest them.

Bricktop

And one on the wing...

Buy real cockie seed from the supermarket and feed them with that in a dish on the back lawn.

And don't buy those stupid seed bells made with glue... they're poisonous too.

If I do ever get an Australian parrot, I'll read as much as I can  before I bring one home.

Here is the secret... learn about birds with a budgie...

They eat seeds.. but they LOVE anything green, so something like swisschard (silverbeet) is good, carrot, celery, apple..

They MUST have sand to eat because sand helps to grind the seeds in their crop (gullet) ... and fresh water. Keep 15 -30 mils of sand (I use beach sand but yellow is good too)

Get a VERY young bird...(Straight out of the nest is best)

Never keep them in a draft.. Put a towel over their cage at night.... they must go to sleep when the sun goes down but when they're in the dark, you can teach them to talk..

Keep the baby in the cage for 3 days - a week, offering it the green stuff by hand. (put your hand in the cage) Do not panic if the bird panics... ALWAYS talk non stop telling the bird how wonderful it is... Birds LOVE noise... it's silence they hate... silence = creepy predator to them....

Get a stick... thick as your thumb at least.

When you let the bird fly outside the cage and it flies to a curtain rod.... you walk up to it, put the stick under it's chest and it'll jump on it.... always talking to it like, "come on, get on pretty boy"... they always fly off again and you have to repeat that several times.....lol... eventually you don't have to move... they learn you are their new mum and they come when you call them. Birds LOVE company.

Food trains birds... their favourite food/treat. And like I said, they cannot resist the green stuff. <<<< that is all Australia parrots and Cockies.

See how my friend (who was in the middle of moving house) let's her two cockatiels out of the cage? Notice the pot plant saucer on the right? That is their bath. Birds need water on their feathers for preening. You can spray them with water too... they love it.
