Trump has pulled out of an arms treaty with Russia, claiming they have broken their commitment.

I actually think the world is under less pressure because of Trump. This is not a typical interventionist, dem/gop, world policeman administration.

So, you think a new arms race is about to happen with Russia? They can't afford it.

True. He was always strongly against the "ventures" of both parties

As to this, of course he's cancelling the treaty that Russia has NOT been adhering to for years. One sides free hands vs the other's hands tied is never a sensible thing

I suspect it will lead to a new agreement that both follow ... so long as verification is for real

IHJ - right. Russia cannot afford competing. Last time they tried it cost them the entire USSR

Now we are getting down to the nitty gritty. Previous administrations looked the other way, this one expects more than just a signature on a treaty.

There will be no new treaty.

This will initiate a new arms race, because Trump and his generals need to untie their hands to be able to deploy intermediate range, land launched nuclear capable missiles.

Why?

Because China, not a signatory to this treaty, is developing a land based, mid-range nuclear missile strike capability.

If the US is bound by the treaty with Russia, it cannot respond.

This is about China. Not Russia.

Why is the US withdrawing from the treaty?

US officials believe Moscow is developing and has deployed a ground-launched system in breach of the INF treaty that could allow it to launch a nuclear strike on Europe at short notice.

Russia has consistently denied any such violation.

Trump said on Saturday that it was only fair for US to develop the weapons since Russia and China (not a signatory of the treaty) were already doing it.

"In early 2017, reports emerged that Russia was violating the INF through the deployment of the 9M728 (SS-CX-7) and 9M729[13] (SS-CX-8) missiles as part of the Iskander missile system. These are widely reported as variants of the earlier SS-C-4. According to U.S officials, two missile battalions equipped in SSC-8 are deployed as of 14 Feb. 2017 in violation of the treaty.[11][14][15] Each battalion consists of 4 launchers, each launcher supplied with six nuclear-tipped cruise missile. One battalion is located at Kapustin Yar near Volgograd; the other's location is unknown at this time. "

That's a LOT of nuclear warheads, aimed at many European targets.

Despite your boredom on the subject, this is very bad news, and we should all be concerned that this will lead to a new arms race, particularly in Europe, where these weapons would be used...and in Asia when China deploys them.

A 2 way arms race was bad enough. A 3 way will be exponentially worse.
