Job growth slowed and unemployment ticked higher last month, marking a break from a string of data showing surprising strength in the labor market.

U.S. employers added a seasonally adjusted 175,00 jobs in April, the Labor Department reported on Friday. That was far less than in March, when gains exceeded 300,000, and also below what economists had expected. The unemployment rate ticked up to 3.9% from March's 3.8%.

Wages also rose less than anticipated, increasing 3.9% from a year earlier after rising 4.1% in March.

Friday's report is sure to stir immediate debate among economists and investors about whether the labor market is merely cooling in a welcome fashion or starting to show more serious strains under the pressure of higher interest rates.

Probably went to another jubilee and was abducted by an all-female bluegrass band again.

Funny how that seems to "coincidentally" happen *every* year.

The Flea Trap / Re: This woke shit

I remember going on a field trip to Toronto's Black Creek Pioneer Village when I was in elementary school. It has become the latest victim of woke historical revisionism.

Black Creek Pioneer Village name changing to be more 'inclusive'

o be more inclusive with Indigenous peoples, Black Creek Pioneer Village will be changing its name.

Later this year, the museum located near York University will be known as The Village at Black Creek.

The move, which will come at a cost, follows a decision by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority Board of Directors in April 2023 .

Reaction on social media site X about the name change was plentiful and critical.

"Why are we (literally) erasing pioneers?" wrote one concern resident. "They were a huge part of building the country we know today. And where else in Toronto can kids go to learn about them?"

Another added: "The Village at Black Creek sounds like a shopping centre."

Others asked how the current name is offensive while some questioned the need for its change.

"When will this madness stop? Nobody else but pioneers were here to build this nation," another X user wrote. "They are PIONEERS."

The museum said further updates to include other communities in the city are at the planning stages.

"To continue 'restory-ing' the Village, we are beginning to partner with other equity-deserving communities to ensure that their stories – from their perspectives and in their words – are also shared with visitors to the Village," the museum said.

Quote from: caskur on May 02, 2024, 07:46:52 AMIt isn't a punishment.

There is no fairer system than Medicare.

A millionaire can have a free doctor consultation as well as Burger King worker or a pensioner.

How is that "punishing" the millionaire? It isn't.

Yes, they can both see a doctor and not pay any upfront fees, but that is where the "fairness" ends. Look at what the government is conficating from the millionaire for a health care levy vs the Burger King employee.
