Kari Lake is hoping to flip the Arizona US Senate seat being vacated by Kyrsten Sinema. But a new Emerson College Polling/The Hill survey shows that she's not consolidating the GOP base. The poll shows her likely Democratic opponent, Ruben Gallego, winning 15% of GOP voters.

Students sitting for the STAAR exam throughout the state of Texas will have their written answers automatically graded by artificial intelligence. The development comes as some fear AI could significantly affect education in the near future.

The exam — provided by the Texas Education Agency — will use an "automated scoring engine" to help grade open-ended questions on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness for writing, reading, science, and social studies. The move is a step beyond using machines to simply grade multiple-choices answers or Scantron sheets.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an alarming rise of an aggressive and highly fatal secondary fungal infection among those with active or recovered COVID-19.

Research suggests that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the overuse of immunosuppressive COVID-19 treatments such as corticosteroids and antibiotics, and the global pandemic response made people more susceptible to coinfections such as COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM).

Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is an opportunistic fungal infection that typically affects the sinuses, lungs, and brain. It is caused by a group of molds commonly found in the environment. Before COVID-19, these fungi rarely caused infection because of low virulence, but the second wave of COVID-19 brought tens of thousands of reported cases. Even the Omicron variant, which was generally attributed to mild COVID-19, has been linked to lethal mucormycosis infections in the United States and Asia.

Quote from: Thiel on April 30, 2024, 10:05:15 PMThat is a scoialist's version of fairness. The more you make, the more you pay. But, you don't receive more.

If public health care wanted to be more fair they would get rid of the 3 percent and charge high risk people more. That would also incentivize smokers and the obese to get healthy.
In some ways, our health care is funded not that much differently. Unlike Australia, health care funding comes out of general revenue. Since we have "progressive taxation" in Canada, the more you earn, the more you pay. So indirectly, high earners are subsidizing those on the other end of the scale, like Australia.

Quote from: caskur on April 30, 2024, 10:39:37 AMWell you'd be wrong then. 3% of every tax payers income is fair, it works and has done for 50 years.
How on earth is one person perhaps paying several times more than another person for the same medical services not the polar opposite of fairness?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is rejecting a call from some doctors for his government to reconsider its planned capital gains tax hike.

The doctors warn that the tax change could undermine efforts to recruit and retain physicians in Canada and threaten the stability of the health-care system.

Canadian Medical Association president Kathleen Ross told the Canadian Press earlier Tuesday that many doctors would be be hit by the hike because they incorporate their medical practices and invest for their retirement within their corporations.

Ross said many doctors set themselves up as small businesses, incorporating their practices to help them deliver services to their patients.

In a statement posted on the CMA website, Ross said the hike "will create another barrier to retaining and recruiting physicians in a time when our health system and the providers within it are already under constant strain."

The statement says that the tax increase undermines the well-being of doctors and "jeopardizes the stability of our struggling health-care system" at a time when physicians are already leaving the profession or reducing their hours.

Ross's concerns were echoed by the non-profit organization Doctors Manitoba.
