You guys were in Acronym Finder?  I didn't know you were famous.

You can probably thank Obi/ThWAP for that... it's the kind of thing he'd do.

Okay the genesis of the KOF phenomenon is sort of funny, so:

A bunch of us had been aggressively moshing around in a newsgroup (w.katzenjammer).

Behind the scenes, in email, we began communicating and discovered that we actually liked each other.

One day a fellow who went by Riotgear in the newsgroup declared that we were like digital knights, and in fact whether we liked it or not we were all part of something called "Order Of The Illustrious Katzenjammer Knights Of Fire".

Like most everything else we did in public we took it to absurd levels... knight/medieval themed avatars and signatures, etc.

The reactions we got made it all worth it and provided much amusement.

"OOTIKKOF" eventually became "OOTIKOF" when a fair number of us no longer posted in or even had access to the MSNTV katzenjammer newsgroup.

...and that's about it, really.

I only read the archives, I doubt anyone posts in alt.flame anymore except viagra bots.

I checked and my eternal-september account still worked.

When I downloaded the headers for alt.flame it fetched less than 200 articles, almost entirely spam and fruitcakes.

In 2022 there have only been about a half-dozen posts, according to eternal-september.

*sigh*

It seems like Vitty, Bones, Mulder, KM, Flea, and Ceedub are having a private party and not inviting the non flamers. Bring us up to speed. What the fuck is KOF?

KOF *was* a motley collection of folk who met in the WebTV/MSNTV newsgroups.

We had so much fun picking on each other and flaming anyone else who showed up that people started taking the whole thing way more seriously than we took ourselves.

Eventually WebTV/MSNTV folded and the whole KOF thing faded into the fevered memories of people like Poppy who STILL take the whole thing more seriously than we ever did.

Needless to say it's not relevant at all now because it only exists as a mention in various usenet/web archives.

Something just occurred to me, Poppy.

Do you still visit alt.flame, Flonk, The Nose, or any other usenet groups?

If so, is there anything left other than bots and maniacs chronicling their experiences with EMP mind control attacks?

I still have a newsreader and I'm sure I could find an NNTP server (is eternal-september still a thing?).

If it's just a vast digital wasteland I don't expect I'll bother though.

I know you think I'm trolling but I'm not, I swear.

No, I didn't think that at all.

I'm just exploring the possibility that the events unfolded slightly differently than you remember them.

He called himself Rukia Kuchiki and sported this avatar of a little Japanese girl in lingerie. This guy was flirting with him nonstop and he was all excited about it.

If Maxis had bothered to take 20 seconds and do a search on that name (like I just did) he would have known it was a fictional anime/manga character.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rukia_Kuchiki">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rukia_Kuchiki

...which brings me back to the idea that Maxis did kinda bring this on himself and that's hilarious.

It almost makes me wish I could have seen it happen in real time.

He was actually pretending to be a lil Japanese girl at BF in an attempt to catfish this horndog named Maxis.

I don't think I've ever met or even heard of this 'Maxis' fellow but is it at all possible that Maxis was such a horndog that he jumped to a few conclusions and ended up embarrassing himself?

Not trying to make insinuations but I find it difficult to believe anyone could mistake Poppy -in any sort of costume- for a little Japanese girl.

Poppy has always been what we could diplomatically call "eccentric".

It has a certain surreal charm, actually.

Usenet was fun, I'm not going to lie, despite the fact that at least half the nyms found in the alt.* portion of the newsgroup hierarchy were Poppy Socks.

Poor kid used to get so confused about all the nyms he was using that he'd often talk to himself as if it were two (or more!) different people.

Good times.

Poppy, you're still operating a few degrees offset from the rest of us.

Put down the controller, go hydrate, and then get some rest.

You'll thank me in the morning.

Given the name of the subforum this should definitely be here...

Something catches up with all of us, even if it's only time.

I 'spect with me it'll be cigarettes because I gave up binge drinking and whatnot ages ago.

AHAHAHAHA! Leveling while crafting, so you were punching rocks to get iron ore and slapping trees for lumber?

I clearly typed "leveling my crafting" as in being able to craft higher-end stuff and we were also quite obviously discussing converting bought gems to crafting materials/etc. which I wouldn't have had to do if I'd been spending all my time out there punching rocks and slapping trees, no?

Perhaps you shouldn't play so much Cuphead; it's making you a little... twitchy.
