Quote from: JOE on Today at 12:55:52 AMWithout being that familiar with thos court case & being unaligned with either side, I'd have to say the verdict seemed too severe. Usu an accused is found guilty of a portion of the counts. But Trump? They threw the entire book at him. Guilty on all accounts. That does seem rather extreme and usu such verdicts are reserved for mass murderers not white collar crime.
Quote from: JOE on May 30, 2024, 07:25:03 PMWhile I'm no fan of Trump Bigly, I wonder why Trump is feared compared to George W Bush who came before him.

They talk about Trump dismantling democracy in America & taking away all your rights, but I think a lot of that had already been done during the W Bush administration with the Democrats looking on in approval. Obama rolled back many rights of Americans too. Some of the things his administration did were appalling
Quote from: caskur on Today at 12:11:23 AMJoe, the left are no longer the left of the old days where their main concern was for working men's rights.
I feel he did more right things than wrong things... what do you think?
Quote from: JOE on May 30, 2024, 10:03:44 PMEither way, American politics is such a circus.
Quote from: JOE on May 30, 2024, 09:46:44 PMIn all seriousness Herman Herm I'm not sure what to make of this verdict.
Have to examine and read about it more before judging it.
so I'm more or less neutral on the topic.
That being said, it does seem rather severe that Trump was found guilty on 34 out of 34.
Quote from: Herman on May 30, 2024, 09:45:33 PMBetween now and July 11, Trump will be able to move about as he pleases. He will also no longer have to adhere to gag-order restrictions which previously prevented him from discussing witnesses or the judge and his family members. Trump has previously noted that Merchan's daughter is a political consultant who raises funds for high-profile Democrats such as Rep. Adam Schiff of California.
Trump will also likely participate in a pre-sentencing interview with a probation officer, who will then submit a sentencing report to Merchan.
Judge Merchan will have almost exclusive authority to determine Trump's sentence, and he has several options to consider, including jail.
Though Trump has been convicted of 34 felonies, they are nonviolent, class E felonies, the least serious in the state of New York, and often don't result in jail time. Trump also has no prior criminal record and at 77 years old is not likely to be a threat to the public, all factors that could play in his favor.
Cheryl Bader, a law professor at Fordham University, thinks it's "unlikely" that Merchan will give Trump time behind bars. "Given that he is a former president, has a Secret Service detail and is also the presumptive Republican nominee, I think a term of incarceration would be logistically very difficult," she told the Guardian,
