It's an obsessive need for attention, even the negative kind will do. In fact it's usually the negative kind that brings them the most satisfaction. Look at each of the problem childern we have experienced recently; once you break down their ego driven bullshit they all have the same basic lame M.O.
It's a common trait all internet misfits and trolls share. Pretty sad actually.
