That garden is a dog's breakfast! One needs to make use of native flora and natural products from the environment and(or) recyclables. That way the garden is not only cost-effective, but cost efficient too. Native flora often need only rely on the local climate. This way one is not overwatering and leaching excessive nutrients(fertilisers) into the ground water table. I fool you not!
Below is a perfect example of such a garden:

No offense but that "garden" is an unmanicured mess. Using indigenous plant life in a garden is fine but Jesus Christ keep it under control. That shit looks more over grown than a bush on a 40 year old Serbian.

Non native species are fine if they can handle the climate. It will not do harm to the soil either. Where I live it gets so frickin cold in winter that few non native plants are even an option.
