"Speaking to CBC" is all the rage with paper-assed millennials.

Ever listened to Cross County Checkup? It is a terrestrial nursing home for baby boomers.

You must be part of the demographic, then; most people still in possession of their cognitive faculties can tell the difference between a county and a country.

I just spoke to CBC and they are waiting on a response from the VPD. It's true we don't know the full picture of the circumstances yet. Injuring someone this severely over stolen property is quite an escalation. Legally, even if there was a scuffle, any self-defence needs to be proportionate. If someone assaults you, you don't get to assault them causing bodily harm in return, that is disproportionate, no matter who started it. Hopefully video will come out.

That doesn't give you the right to assault them, though. If you attack them or their property, you wont get any sympathy if they retaliate.

Use your words to debunk and shame them.

You talk like a mellennial with a paper ass.

All the sane people leave because it's so toxic. It's amazing how apathetic people are these days. This stuff happens because people allow it to happen. imagine a world where no one was willing to put up with this sort of bullshit rather than just ignore it and say not my problem.

Also it's amazing how many people don't understand what freedom of speech actually is, and don't know that hate speech is a crime in Canada.

Are you lost? I think you're looking for the forum and thread two blocks down. Dipshit!

So let me get this straight - a man got his leg broken for standing up to hate speech, and this forum just wants to complain that he wrote about it? Wouldn't you write about it? Posting "HEY A GUY BROKE MY LEG IN THE STREET" isn't acting like a martyr, you limp-dicked whiners. Complaining that a guy "seems like a total chode" for standing up to hate speech just reeks of jealousy: that another man might be brave enough to do the right thing, and be supported for it, while all you can do is gripe about it on a forum. Shame on any of you who said he had it coming. Get a life.

There is a powerful tool for what I call "connection-speech," which not only lets you make your point but helps you make it in a friendly, respectful way that can be heard. Connection-speech offers a ray of hope in the dark storm cloud that is internet vitriol, and vitriol in general.  If we want to keep the possibility of persuasion open, we have to stay conversational.  If so, we have to start actually supporting it and modeling civility ourselves. Both offline and on, if we stop fanning hate and instead practice connection-speech, that little ray of hope for a better way of interacting and even disagreeing with one another could spread.
