I don't understand why anybody feels they need mood altering substances.
Because the world is full of damaged individuals that need mood or brain altering substances to function. Sad but true.
Excluding those who use medicinally prescribed weed, it's for those plebes who just like to get high. Unfortunately now we have sociopolitical forces pushing a narrative that smoking weed is somehow safe and that the smoke you inhale into your lungs doesn't do you any harm...Yeah right...Until 20 years from now after the legalization and social acceptance has been completed and pushed into the mainstream, rates of lung cancer start to rise again.
The legalization of weed is nothing more than a government tax scheme...They ran the tobacco users out of town with the ever increasing tobacco taxes and use of social engineering and now they need another cash cow. Recently our bubble headed, libtard, dimwitted example of an awful human being AND governor, signed a bill to legalize pot in NJ despite the fact that it is still illegal on a federal level..."Why" you may ask... because his rotten, corrupt, democrap ass took huge campaign donations from the cannabis lobby and now the state gets to apply a 40% tax on weed sales on top of the licensing and insurance fees it collects from state licensed distributors. So now your 20 weed stash from Dime-bag Darrel down the street who was dealing out of his childhood bedroom, just jumped to 35 bucks or more from the local state licensed weed distributor...
But nobody ever said weed smokers were smart...and it's called brain damage no matter what kind of socially or faux scientifically contrived friendly face you put on it...
I read that illegal distributors of marijuana are still around in Canada even though it's been legal here for three or four years.

Hey did you ever notice something weird and rather disconcerting about the history of middle earth?..The first age is supposed to take place approximately 6,500 years before the Hobbit and LOTR but there is almost no technological or even societal advancement. In that 65 centuries the world continues to be sparsely populated by what for all intents and purposes would be considered "primitives" who are suspicious, jealous and isolated from each other. The same people are fighting over the same stuff for the same reasons with the same goals with swords and spears and sticks and rocks and shit. With a few exceptions, most everyone seems to be content to sit around and live like a pack of intellectually stunted rubes. And those "exceptions" aren't very good at advancing society either...Most are just a bunch of jealous, elites with all of the worst human frailties.
Yeah, I noticed that, too. And I can raise pretty much the same objection with any epic fantasy series... Jordan's, Martin's, Goodkind's, what have you.
It's as though the "human-like" characters in those series (LotR included) are fundamentally "unhumanlike" in their complete lack of curiosity about the world around them. This was a major disappointment in, say, Martin'sA Song of Fire and Ice(which I still otherwise enjoyed). I've thought about this and I've come to think the inability (or unwillingness) of the authors of such sagas to at least pay lip service to somecuriosity on the part of their protagonists' about what makes their universe tick is linked to the use of magic as a backdrop to their stories. Who cares how the world actually operates if you can instantly affect that world through invisible, supernatural means, right? It's the only thing that makes sense to me. Well, that and the fact that these tales are meant to be deliberate homages to the courtly stories of our medieval past.
If this is true, then fantasy, as a literary genre, is even more of a collection of adolescent power fantasies than is science fiction. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I pride myself for being as in touch with my Inner Adolescent as is the next geek, but it might explain why I prefer science fiction over fantasy. Both fantasy and science fiction appeal to my sense of wonder but, being sapient (as is the majority of the members of the specieshomo sapiens sapiens--with the possible exception of Mel and Eddie), I derive much more satisfaction from understanding how things work than I do from imagining how they might in a world not bound by reason or science.
Still, a good yarn is a good yarn. AndThe Lord of the Ringsis one of the better ones, even if character development continuously overshadows societal development in the telling.
All very valid points and as you say a good yarn is a good yarn....But of course most fantasy literature is little more than adolescent escapism that appeals to those with a overactive imagination. The real world "whys" and "hows" of intellectual curiosity are always subordinate to the romantic notions of good vs evil and the overarching concept that there is always something paranormal afoot.
I learned early on that at the end of the day, fantasy is a relatively stagnant genre of literature. There are a few standouts but they are few and far between...Most of it is pretty much a morass of tired plots, mirrored characters, and in some of the lowest examples nothing more than plagiarized dreck....Terry Brooks with his "Sword of Shannara" series of stories is a prime example...His writings are tired, rehashed, been there, done that, waste of time and paper but yet his awful shit sells like hot cakes...
