I didn't have Guest posting but new Users had to be approved by the Admin (me) and that's where I saw the registration attempts.
It's been a while so details are a bit fuzzy but as I recall the bots were a fairly consistent headache.
Some days there were more than others but I don't remember there being any sort of general pattern to the number of registrations per day.
Contemporary bots might follow a completely different pattern or patterns of activity though.
I'm sure their code has evolved over time.
