Unpleasant, though not life threatening unless you're allergic to it. Considering what can happen if your diabetes goes unchecked, if the cost was simply a bit of smelly wee-wee, I'd be listening to the doctor. And keeping a close eye out for any more serious side effects as noted of course.

I used to sell water purifiers back in the day and understood that "good" did not always equate to "beneficial", particularly when it came to people with conditions like kidney disease. Take Reverse Osmosis (RO) filters as an example; a properly maintained one will provide demineralised water which, while great for reducing the formation of kidney stones, has also been argued to strip out the very minerals essential for proper kidney function.

You would likely need to pair an RO unit with a remineralisation unit to add in the required minerals. Only a blood specialist cold tell you which ones and how much, they're in a position to see things like your calcium and magnesium levels and a competent doctor could advise accordingly. Some adjustment to the diet might also be required.

Which of course I'm not, but as a sales rep for water filtration systems I necessarily needed to have a clue about the whole thing. And with RO units needing a higher level of upkeep, I personally only recommended them if the purchaser was in a hard water area, or in cases where the local plumbing was old and leaching shitloads of metals into the water supply. In most cases it was easier and more cost effective to go with an activated carbon block filter (typically 0.5 - 1.0 micron). That will typically take care of the heavier metals and microbes, certainly it improves the taste, odor and color of tap water which is why I used it.

Note though; I don't suffer from kidney disease and would in good conscience defer to competent medical advice on a case by case basis. As far as my personal use case went, I was happy to eliminate the all too prevalent mineral taste (aluminium in particular) from my drinking water. There were also the occasional algae outbreak in the city dams, as well as cryptosporidium, giardia and at one point, a report of gordian worm infestation in the municipal sand filters. Add that to the miles of pipes between myself and the water source and I could make the argument (to myself at least) that point of consumption filtration was an essential health measure.

 That's what started with me. I actually do not absorbed minerals like I'm supposed to and the main problem are my parathyroids.

 Hit my kidney the hardest. It's a GOOD thing you are catching that now because I went through absolute hell for 4 years straight. And then I still needed surgeries for years after.

 I was so sick. I couldn't work. Couldn't even hold down food. I was hospitalized several times with kidney infections that would get severe so fast. I've had 3 blood transfusions and i developed a very rough addiction to opiates.

 I was really sick.

 Now my function in my left kidney was damaged...it was at 72 percent function. The lower section is full of stones to this day (they don't cause issues for me bad enough for me to have that partial nephrectomy....I may still do it though. My man here promised I'd be in good hands if I get it so we shall see).

 My function in that kidney improved greatly to 90 percent. So I did manage to do some healing.

 You are going to get tons of advice on diets and home remedies and all kinds of useless crap. Here is my advice.

 Water. Plain water. Infused water. Make sure it's clean filtered water....get a good water purifier. 

 Wash all your fruits and veggies really good...stay away from pesticides and such. You already know that.

 One of the best infused waters for this is cut up lemon(keep the peels on it), cut up a cucumber, and a few mint springs and let that sit in the fridge over night. Drink at least 2 gallons a day.

 And turmeric. Turmeric is a great anti inflammatory. There is a lot of inflammation involved when the kidneys act up.

 Stay on top of urinary health. Wash your underwear in a good nontoxic laundry wash with NO fabric softener.

 I say this because infections are awful and if your kidneys are sensitive a UTI can quickly become a few days in the hospital

 Other than that... just keep an eye on it. Listen to your doctor.

 Just be mindful of your general health.

My Doctor is keeping an eye on my Kidneys because they are leaking protein and that means I could develop kidney disease so I have to keep phosphorous and potassium levels low..
