In 1996 Chuck Schumer said exactly what the Republicans are saying today.

He called it an anti-fraud amendment. He said illegal immigrants were getting jobs and benefits through fraud. He said a driver's license and Social Security card should be required to prove you're a legitimate worker. He warned his colleagues that the public gets angry when Congress says it's doing something and then does nothing — when every rational, small proposal gets buried under hypotheticals.
That was Chuck Schumer. Thirty years ago.

Today that same Chuck Schumer calls the SAVE Act voter suppression. Today he stands with Hakeem Jeffries claiming Republicans are trying to rig elections by asking people to show ID to vote. Today a jury just convicted an illegal immigrant in Massachusetts who stole an American's identity, voted in the 2024 presidential election, and collected $400,000 in fraudulent benefits.
Schumer in 1996 would have demanded her prosecution. Schumer in 2025 would call her a victim.
