Just wow.
A federal judge in Texas said on Friday that the Affordable Care Act's individual coverage mandate is unconstitutional and that the rest of the law therefore cannot stand.
Legal experts say the ruling won't immediately affect Americans' health coverage, and a group of states led by California is already vowing to appeal. But the invalidation of the landmark health care law popularly known as Obamacare throws into doubt the future of health coverage for millions of Americans on the Obamacare exchanges and in Medicaid expansion.
The ruling and expected appeal sets up another cliffhanger in which the fate of the law, which Republicans have unsuccessfully tried to repeal for years, will likely once again ultimately lie with the Supreme Court.
Chief Justice John Roberts cast the deciding vote leaving the law intact in 2012, but it's unclear how the justices will view this challenge, which centers on changes to the individual mandate that were baked into the 2017 tax reform.

Holy shit, now what?
If an appeal is unsuccessful, expect a fight in the divided houses and the executive branch.

I haven't read the whole ruling yet, but my understanding it's only on the individual mandate.
As a sidebar on Obamacare, premiums skyrocketed 105% between 2013 and 2017 and fifty per cent of counties had only one or no insurer. Since reforms in 2017, premiums have risen five per cent because there is choice now for insurers. The GOP congress stabilized Obamacare. It was unsustainable under Obama.

That would explain why support for it has increased.
Tangentially...what is a STATE judge doing ruling on FEDERAL legislation.
State courts have no authority on Federal matters in Australia.

Apparently they can make rulings, but it doesn't need an appeal to a higher court. Any federal judge can over rule it. And since most judges in the Southern district are prog appointees, I expect that to happen.
Weird.
State courts here have no authority on Federal matters. All Federal matters are referred to Federal courts.

That's why nobody in any branch of government is too concerned about coming up with a replacement. A federal judge will over rule the state judge's decision.

Israel has universal health care and participation in one of the four official plans is mandatory.
I haven't used Canada's public health system so far, just the private system for dental visits. Canada's health care system is very expensive and doesn't cover nearly as much as in Israel. I also hear that wait times for necessary procedures can be excessive.
I wish I could buy private supplemental basic insurance. Maybe not now, but in the future when we get older. It would be good for public health's purse and good for us.

We are in no position to be judging any country about poor health care delivery..
We pay a lot more and receive less than most other OECD countries..
I think it was Seoul who posted that health care consumes up to fifty per cent of health care in most provinces and the numbers are climbing..
Our health care is not sustainable without significant reforms.
Remember, no care is free .. and so-called fees in state systems are not the cost
govt systems are actually paid mostly by taxes - so what seems cheaper is not
And yes, Canada is one of the worse - waiting times on most things are cruel .. whether specialist visits, procedures, scans etc or operations

The USA is a poor example of market oriented health care and Canada is a poor example of state monopolized health care.

USA is many times richer than Australia and yet they have universal healthcare for its citizens.
Australia also maintains a triple A credit rating and a low debt to gfp ratio.
Why BT? why!?!
I don't think the American social or economic model works very well.
They spend more per capita than every nation in the world and still over 20% of their citizens remain uninsured
$20 trillion in debt and no adequate healthcare for many if its citizens
The USA is NOT "many times richer". It's economy is larger...because it's a more populous country, but that does not translate into quality of life, which encompasses many more factors than simple finance.
Using a quality of life index //https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings_by_country.jsp Australia is well ahead of the US AND Canada.
Australians do not regard monetary wealth as a measure of happiness or quality of life. It is a factor, but not a predominant one.
Australians are, as a result of their convict inspired culture, highly egalitarian and co-operative. Australia, despite the odd misstep, has a strongly unifying culture...perhaps stronger than most western cultures and many more tribalised cultures. If 2 Australians meet in a foreign country, they will stop and chat. Brits just walk past each other.
Our geography is also a factor; we are isolated from most of racial and cultural kin, and so we develop a stronger internal unity. As America well knows, Australia also values loyalty.
We're a funny nation...constructed from odd and seemingly incompatible cultural material which gives us strength, but with our own weird way of doing things in some respects. We're like our fauna...strange, unique, cute...yet deadly.

Canada has one of the worst health care systems in the OECD . And how can we call it universal health care when so many services are not insured like in other developed countries.
Our health care system is so expensive and consumes so much of provincial budgets we can expect the number of services provided to continue to be delisted(privatized).
Universal health care in Canada is on life support.
