I was living in England. But although a jibe, you're right in a sense. Australia was very much behind the rest of the world.

If you were born in Finland, you would have been trading in furs in your youth.
According to my DNA tests, Finnish is the most prominent nationality in my DNA. I am aware of DNA matches in Sweden and Belorussia.

It is??
Yes.
Around 20,000 people in Finland share my DNA.
That doesn't mean I have family there, only that at some point a distant male ancestor was a Suomi.

We are genetically related to lots of people in the baltic and eastern-european regions.
The mother of all plans is to join all finnish tribes together..
To annex Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia to the urals, parts of Norway, parts of Sweden..
That was the dream of our leaders during WW2.

Actually, for the money, stuff lasts longer today than it did 30 odd years ago.
Manufacturing technologies have improved and synthetic materials are of much better quality.
At the cheap end of the market, such as Ikea, you cannot deny that it's good value for the money.

We bought a leather reclining couch two years ago and it's falling apart..
It wasn't a cheap couch either.
Hmmm...I guess there are still scam manufacturers out there.

Really?
You musta bought some pretty cheap furniture back then, BT.
Most of the furniture I see now is so cheap.
And its expensive too.
Office Depot a lotta that made in China chit is so chesp looking and breaks after a couple if uses.
Actually sales of 'vintage ' furniture is booming in Vancouver because the buyer knows they are getting a quality piece of furniture made outta real materials like solid wood, real fabric & steel.
Now its just cheap prefab shit.
Everyone knows the antique stuff was better
Thats why they are still buying it in Vancouver

We bought some second hand furniture when we arrived in Canada. It was cheap and was not too ugly. We bought new furniture recently from the Brick, Furniture Land and Walmart. We have no complaints so far.
I like fabric/textile couch´s and chairs..
Leather sticks to my ass..
Thought I had posted this - but might have closed browser too soon - if repeat, pls forgive me
30 yrs ago mate and I combined the best of what we both had - mostly mine because I has been in the antique business prior to that and took advantage of good stuff for cheap while I could
We have some true antiques, some might not yet qualify officially - but all strong and good quality today
I have never shown much of my personal side, but could take some pics and try to get them onsite if anyone interested in that sort of stuff

Once leather starts to go, it's gone quickly..
Our couch is only two years old and the leather is coming off.

I think they might need to be maintained.. Like leather boots..
I´ve always thought that leather furniture is for well disciplined people.
People who wear straight pants at home...

I used the oil that came with it, but it didn't last..
We had a leather couch before that lasted seven years.
OK Gaon, you asked for it, Can't do many for a while, but here's a start - Might do a thread in sub or something (in a while) if anyone wants to see more stuff
The Mighty Throne Chair - Makes me feel all Guinevere'y when mate sits in it

Here's my ultimate pride and joy - The Infamous "Whore's Leg" - and it comes with history and a great story
My previous mate's grandfather and I had a very special relationship - He disliked his grandson that I had divorced but considered me to be his special grand daughter. He, Ozzie, gave me this decanter set just before he died.
He flew biplanes and was moved to France at a point - bought it in Paris 100 years ago at the end of WW1 .....
in a .. . you guessed it right .. Paris Bordello
How he got it home along with the six glasses all in top shape I'll never know, but he did

I like the chair cc. It appears to be in excellent condition.
We had it re-leathered about 1992. I'm not sure how old it is, but it was made by the Chicago Carriage Manufacturing Co
I'll bet cc's leg looks just like it...
I'm slimmer in the ankle and foot .. But that's my Alaska ship hostess garter
Ozzie actually brought it home with a legit one from the bordello but it finally disintegrated, so I replaced it with mine
I'm pretty sure he's be good with that ... That's not really me and my smile in the avatar ac_biggrin
It's NOT?
Damn.
Never had any complaints, but .. heh .. I wasn't there to model for it 100 yrs ago
Mate did a mod so that the vertical tippy object could be secured to the base ... otherwise it likely would not be here today
Pity. We could have hooked up.

I was at a friends mothers home & she had a piece of furniture from c. 1600.
Elizabethan and it had the date inscribed on it in Roman numerals.
Real handcrafted furniture made without a machine.
I never saw wood furniture that old before or since.
It was an extraordinary sight like a work of art
Must have been made for some aristocrat I don't see how any ordinary English person from that time could afford something like that. Since just about everyone back then was dirt poor
Was a unicorn sitting in it?
I dont like leather couches. They are cold in winter and sticky in the summer. I dont like the feel of it in general.
I like older pieces too. I'm been thinking to look in some vintage places lately. Anyone know of anything good in lower mainland?
I really like this piece.

I believe it was real.
It did not have a machine cut appearance.
Was very irregular looking as if it was made out of hand tools.
Anyways she was/is really rich.
Lived in the best part of Vancouver in a mansion
Her mother's family owned a department store.
And her family was mentioned in Peter Newman's book, The Canadian Establishment '

So I doubt that she had any reason to 'fake it' or put imitation furniture in her home.
But of course for reasons of privacy I won't post the person's name here

Nowadays going to the library for info makes your brain smaller. You can google whatever you like to find out within minutes. Saves gas and time.
Books are to information what horses are to modern transport.
They are inefficient, expensive, sometimes difficult to find, and often the information you seek is just a small part of the contents of a large printed volume that you've no interest in.
On the other hand, the internet can be inaccurate, deceptive, unverified or simply untrue.
^fake news^
As evidenced by the post above.
