Title: Pimp my ride
Post by: Frood on February 07, 2019, 06:19:42 PM
(Woohoo!)

My ute canopy (camping) has finally arrived after months on the high seas.

Made completely of steel and able to support over 300 kg of weight on the roof, it also boasts a side kitchen insert and drop down table on gas struts. I've been flicking my bean to the brochure photos of it for years now.

Also arriving next week are the electric caravan side mirrors so I can see directly behind when driving or backing up.  :smiley_thumbs_up_yellow_ani:  It was a tossup between those or a LCD rearview mirror replacement with camera link but decided to pay slightly more for a sturdier mechanical option instead of something that would malfunction on the hot days with high UV through the windscreen which has been a problem with every glass mounted dash cam I've ever used.

Changed out the fuel tank from 80l to 140l a few months ago and got a 40l rear seat footwell water tank with good fittings. Also put all terrain kevlar reinforced tyres on at the same time, replacing the crappy factory ones. I've been using the kevlars over the years and love how you can still drive with nails or screws in them.

There are so many other things I've got but not had installed yet but I've been waiting to get the canopy so the remaining space can be perfectly measured.

Still need to decide on a rooftop tent, solar panels, hot water system, better bullbar, and what sized roof rack-basket to put on.

(I may post photos at a later date here when it's close to completion.)

How have you recently pimped your ride? Do you have a fast car or a tough 4x4 or maybe an asian compact that you have cool seat covers for and unique fluffy dice.  ac_biggrin

I sold a totally restored 1970 truck last year. I might buy another old vehicle and do the same.

I like the oldies but not many are diesel and changeovers are expensive plus headache.

My Landie has the Ford Duratorq 2.2 SD4 installed. The same engine as the Evoque.

190 PS (188 hp/142 kW) and 317 lb·ft (430 N·m). The grunt this thing has for a 2.2 litre engine is astonishing.

I've got the 3.2 Duratorq 5 cylinder. Uses a bit more juice but is worth it.

Used in the bigger Land Rovers. 2.2 is big enough for us. Getting around 9 litres per 100 in the city...down to around 6 on long trips. It's got plenty of grunt, but the standard 2.2 diesel uses less fuel. I thought we'd get better economy than we are. But it's still a little better than my 2.4 Honda Accord Euro.

It has a small engine capacity, but tricked up a bit with better valve and timing components and a bigger turbo.

It really boogies. For a 2.2 litre, 2 tonne 4x4.

I've been hovering around 8.7/100k for awhile now, combined but 70/30 highway-city. Used to be 8.3 then it started gaining weight last year.  ac_biggrin

I was expecting around 7 -8 around town. But it's heavy for its size.

My prob or not really a prob but part cause is the fuel. Try to Costco it every few weeks to get the discount which carries increased weight for the duration between fill ups.

So the savings are partly offset by weight but still significantly lowers running costs and saves time having to make extra servo stops.

Nice Dinky! Planning on some Overland Adventures lol? I've looked at some Jeep camp trailer similar to that, where it all raises up to expose the kitchen and such, and still have the tent on top. Just dreaming of course lol. I like this Hobbit hole camper too lol...

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://inhabitat.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2013/08/hobbit-hole-camper-Samm1t.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://inhabitat.com/wp-content/blogs.%20...%20Samm1t.jpg%22%3Ehttps://inhabitat.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2013/08/hobbit-hole-camper-Samm1t.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

I love making vehicles unique. Im actually in the middle of a Lord of the Rings theme on my Jeep. So far I've only got some designs, but one thing I did was change out the shifter knob for a custom one, with Gandalf's mark engraved on it. Knob has the appearance of wood. Thought I had a pic of it on the stick, but this was all I could find....

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://i.ibb.co/R0s6Qz5/knob.jpg%22%3Ehttps://i.ibb.co/R0s6Qz5/knob.jpg%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

My Jeep's name is Shadowfax (Gandalf's horse), and since I dress as Gandalf, it is only fitting lol. This is a mock up of what Im thinking on the side of the hood. I might not include the tag line. Also Im changing the font since I finally downloaded the right one.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://i.ibb.co/7Yh66xw/jeep-concept.jpg%22%3Ehttps://i.ibb.co/7Yh66xw/jeep-concept.jpg%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

I spliced Tolkien's initials with the ring scripture, and plan on sticking this on the Jeep, thinking in the area where the Jeep logo is ahead of the door. That or on the hood, or spare tire cover. Though for the tire cover, I was thinking of a few different options. Either the map of Middle Earth, this symbol, or Gandalf with his pipe and a quote.

I have a custom plate too, but would rather not reveal it online lol.

You're out there! Cool out there but still out there.

This is similar to what I meant:

Cupboard on one side, fridge and barbecue/sink slide out the back, tent on the top with solar, and a battery with management system.

It's fidgety work trying to design in everything you want but keep the weight down and neat.

Yeah I googled it, and saw those, still pretty cool. Since I have a 2 door Jeep, I have to look at something to pull if I did. The one I was talking about is similar to your over the cab, it just pulls behind, pops up, and has the tent on top of the roof part with a ladder. Even has full size tires.

These aint exactly it, couldnt find what I seen before, but these are close....

I've always been quite partial to the Aliners for trailers. The heavy duty off road versions.

Perfect level of functionality, easy towing, luxury, and an insulated hard roof so important for the heat.

Well the one Dinky is looking at, is like a camper top that attaches to the truck bed, except it is more functional, and has pull out drawers that contain the sink, stove, etc. Then the top is like a pop up camper in a way.

With the one I was window shopping at lol, its a small trailer, that acts the same with the drawers, and pop gear, but up top a tent folds out.

My son watches some kind of Overland Adventure show that he gets into. He wants one too lol. These guys take their vehicles and compact quarters and gear, and go out in the middle of nowhere for a week or so.

Cool, the one I saw was only like $5-6000. I like that Aliner, never seen one.

I imagine things like this would be in areas of Australia and such, with all the remoteness, one needs to be prepared.

Whatever I get (in my dreams lol) needs to be off road ready as well.

Do you remember the Rocky Daihatsu? Back in early 2000. Lil Jeep. My friend saw one on an Outback offroad race thing, saw how it handled, and got one. That thing was awesome, I drove it. Go anywhere like a Jeep and got over 30mpg. Only made 'em 2 years. Even had a crank so you could lift it for more clearance lol.

They're practical I suppose.

Very prepared.

Min carry of 100 litres of water. 50 litres of spare fuel. Minimum 2 spares. Recovery and tow equipment. Full first aid kit and medical equipment. About a weeks worth of food. Refrigerator (ice chest won't cut it).

Driving through the desert takes months of planning, and thousands of $$$$ of equipment. You don't go alone either...most go in club convoys or with a group of friends.

And frankly, having flown over it...I fail to see the aesthetic appeal.

I think those that do it, do so for the machismo. "I drove through the Simpson Desert." Or as its more colloquially expressed "I crossed the Simmo".

The ground gets harder and much further away.

A camper trailer is a little better, but you have to store it somewhere, maintain it, register and insure it for all of about one months use a year. Tops.

Staying in hotels is cheaper in the long run.

No way you bought THAT new.
Title: Re: Pimp my ride
Post by: Frood on February 09, 2019, 07:22:35 AM
It was 4 years old when I bought it.

One owner before that.

Joy to drive, super comfortable, but the heat baked every bit of Japanese approved rubber and component into a leaky mess.

Couldn't rationalize paying out the wazoo every time something didn't function because of sustained heat, when the moon roof leaked during heavy rains, and so on and so forth.

The cost of even basic parts were 3x dearer than alternatives and I parked that beautiful monster real quick then bought a brand new Toyota ute, and virtually gave the Legend away.

It was not made for this climate. I put about 60k on its odometer but had to spend an extra 15k in $ to deal with its problems.

And yes, I could have bought a new one at the time and I'm happy I didn't.

I've had a LOT of Hondas, and still have one that is 20 years old.

Nothing of that nature ever happened with mine.

I suspect it was kept ungaraged, and poorly maintained.

I also never found parts to be much different to other comparable makes, and certainly nowhere near European brands.
Title: Re: Pimp my ride
Post by: Frood on February 09, 2019, 06:32:13 PM
Well, I had it checked over by a mechanic when I purchased it. Others have since told me that modern Hondas have a habit of falling down around the 5 to 6 year mark.

Legend parts were very dear. Dunno about their other models.

North-American cars are status-symbols in here because they cost so much..

All the taxes and tariffs drive that price right up.

Right now I'm waiting in an industrial park for a particular shop to open and sell me some better side mirrors for the ute. The stock ones won't be any good when the canopy arrives and I'll lose rear view vision because I can't see through it (no rear window in it). These things extend out quite far if necessary and are popular with people towing stuff.

Not sure how I've missed this thread, but it's quite interesting.  Especially all the camping gear.  I rarely camp, but until recently I did so with a truck tent.  Had an older Dodge Ram half-ton and a custom tent and mattress.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/47280_1390798045435_6661018_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-2.xx&oh=7b6489f5769411a69e1836563c9e41a5&oe=5CF5C988%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/%20...%20e=5CF5C988%22%3Ehttps://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/47280_1390798045435_6661018_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-2.xx&oh=7b6489f5769411a69e1836563c9e41a5&oe=5CF5C988%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

Got T-boned last year and totaled the truck.  Because we rarely camp, and I'm too old to be interested in other truck functions, I only need a "work truck" now.  (that's hillbilly for a beater truck you only drive to and from work.)  My current work truck is a 20-year old Mazda pickup.  The cab is solid, but I've scrapped the rusty bed and I've got a homebuilt flatbed in progress on it.

Our "good" car is a four year old Chevy Trax, the smallest of their crossover utes, built in Korea.  In times past I had a fetish for German iron but I've been over that for quite a while now.  And in the really old days (the fifties) I was a hot rodder.

Yeah, but at least I was able to eBay the tent and mattress.  Seems like I paid about $350 US for them, and of course they were specific to that model truck over maybe a 5 year span, so I got a buyer right away for fifty cents on the dollar.

Tiny houses/motor homes are fine for warmer climates. Who wants to be cooped up inside for months on end in a tiny home.

Australia is perfectly suited for nomadic wandering. In the north, during the southern winter, it's still 30 plus degrees.

The mirrors installed and then extended for full towing visibility.

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://i.postimg.cc/JnDbvKTc/20190214-145915-1550116833558-1550116850100.jpg%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://i.postimg.cc/JnDbvKTc/20190214-%20...%20850100.jpg%22%3Ehttps://i.postimg.cc/JnDbvKTc/20190214-145915-1550116833558-1550116850100.jpg%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

I know I shouldn't be so excited about such a little thing but I get the canopy next week and have been worried about visibility behind the vehicle on the open road.

It was a toss up between towing mirrors or a rear view camera and display, but it makes sense to not rely on electrics when the solar rays kill electrics.

Thousands. They're called grey nomads. It's like a rite of passage before you go into god's waiting room to await the reaper.

Australia is a vast country, and there is a sense of mild adventure in travelling to its many parts and seeing the diversity and beauty they have to offer.

It's not easy or practical when you have kids and a job, but it's perfectly achievable when retired.

I couldn't do it. When you tally the cost of the van, the truck, fuel, food and stress, flying is by far the best and most economical way of seeing the land.

Tell them that. They all try to do it.

I knew of a couple who decided to become gypsies. New van - $100K for a top of the line gargantuan model. Brand new top of the line Landcruiser V8. $120K.

Add another $20K for ancillary equipment...spares, tools, cameras, CB radio, sat phone and personal items.

They set off, and 200 kilometres later as the wife was driving, she rolled the lot. Complete write off.

She'd never towed a van before.

Just buying all the kit is half the battle.

It's slowly coming together. Discussed poleless awnings, solar configurations, and roof rack versus hd cross beam options for roof gear with the dealer. Only problem I found was the colour, which is not the right hue but then again, I just told them generic white. Wish I asked for them to go the model year colour. It would have been no extra.

An extra they did include was the rear tinted window. Helps heaps being able to use the rear view mirror during lane changes.

I can live with the colour for now. Will get it changed later.

Small pimping but I love a bargain!

Saw these advertised at Aldi awhile ago but couldn't make it there in time for the cut off date so forget about it. Stopped in today and found one remaining. Got it for half the price of other retailers.

My work truck is a 2000 Mazda B2500 with almost 200K miles on the clock.  It's virtually a Ranger and was built in the Ford plant in Houston, but fortunately does not share the Ford badge.

I'll let it know you disparaged its long term prospects, and I'm sure it will beg me to take it to the crusher forthwith.

But at some future point I'll have photos of its transformation, modest though it is.

Because I loaded one of the batteries incorrectly before charging a few months ago and shorted the unit. Just arrived this afternoon.

I've used this as a backup for charging phones, AAA's, AA's, and smaller electrics when the fridge is struggling to keep cold in the heat and drawing 5+ amps.

Ah, Gaon...I'm afraid you missed out on the US's "golden age" of customizing and hot rodding cars, which in my mind was the 1955-1975 era.  Such activities were much less regulated then.  I was an enthusiastic young gearhead then, and cars were more to me than transportation.  Although to be accurate, the term "pimp my ride" is probably less than twenty years old.
