Title: Israel Ranked 10th Healthiest Country in the World
Post by: Gaon on February 28, 2019, 10:36:56 PM
It's hard to follow the Mediterranean diet in Canada.

The Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, published Sunday, ranked 169 nations based on factors such as life expectancy and access to sanitation and medical care

Israel is the 10th healthiest country in the world — 54 spots ahead of the United States.

The Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, published Sunday, ranked 169 nations based on factors such as life expectancy and access to sanitation and medical care. Countries were penalized for tobacco use and obesity, among other health risks.

Unsurprisingly, the Mediterranean diet — common in Israel, as well as Spain and Italy, numbers one and two on the list — was noted in Bloomberg's analysis.

"Mediterranean diet, supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts, had a lower rate of major cardiovascular events than those assigned to a reduced-fat diet," says a study cited by Bloomberg.

The rest of the top 10, in order, are: Spain, Italy, Iceland, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, Singapore and Norway.

The U.S. placed 64th, largely in part to its high obesity rate. Recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control estimate about 40 percent of the country, or over 93 million citizens, are obese.

Israeli food is based on plenty of vegetables and legumes, grapes/wine, citrus fruits and extra virgin olive oil. Tahini, falafel, eggplant, and a variety of salads are always present at the table. All the ingredients of the region. Even the street food is not unhealthy

And if it's like other Mediterranean countries, red meat is not a staple.

And so you know Gaon, the people of Vancouver and Victoria probably have the healthiest diets of any urban centres in Canada.

And as usual, Australia ranks in the top ten.

We eat well from the five major food groups.

Beer, pies, chocolate, cake and chips.

You can get those in Canada.

Australia top ten surprises me. Like you said, the eating and drinking habits are not what any doctor would recommend. But, I did work with rig pigs.

Israel has a healthy cuisine comprised of locally grown fresh fruits, and vegetables ripened on the vine. Combine that with a gentle climate that encourages outdoor activity and it's obvious why Israelis are healthier than Canadians and Russians.

I would think it's possible in Australia to eat healthier than we do..

We grow summer vegetables and seasonal fruit, but the rest of the year they come from factory farms in California..

Not to mention tropical fruits which come from South America..

Australians, especially in the North can enjoy fruits ripened on the tree..

As Gaon mentioned, that tastes better.

Canadians are about as healthy as they can be in a country this size and this cold. Scandinavians are healthy  due to consuming more fish than other forms of protein.

QuoteThe Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, published Sunday, ranked 169 nations based on factors such as life expectancy and access to sanitation and medical care. Countries were penalized for tobacco use and obesity, among other health risks.

The U.S. placed 64th, largely in part to its high obesity rate. Recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control estimate about 40 percent of the country, or over 93 million citizens, are obese.

Life expectancy is a fairly objective measure although non health related fatalities could bias results, like auto accidents, suicides and homicides.  Obesity and tobacco seem like fairly good measures, but then there are other dangerous habits like drug and alcohol use that are important as well.  Sanitation and health care are not well defined and possibly more subject to bias.

I read that American life expectancy is dropping because of so many premature deaths due to the opioid epidemic.

Yes it would appear so.  I think the reason for this was in the past heroin had a huge stigma attached to it as a street drug that only low lives used.  But with the greater growth of pharmaceuticals like oxycodone and other prescribable opiates it has taken the stigma off.   Also before people had to seek out street dealers now they can just go to doctors. I could be wrong but that is what I think is going on.

American physicians are the new street dealers. Opiate addiction is a very big problem here in Vancouver.

That surprises me. Finland has high alcohol consumption per capita. Nearly all of Europe does. South Korea is the Asian country with European levels of alcohol consumption.

It's not just diet that makes Israeli the 10th, it is probably their sex practices. Religious people TRY to stay sexually moral. Circumcision of men lowers problems for women in Israel as well. I think at one time Israeli women had the lowest cervical cancer rates.

Americans are fairly sexually immoral causing their drop down 50 on the charts STD PLUS they don't have traditionally low cost healthcare for the poor. Early preventive medicine help long term illnesses developing. If the poor can't afford a doctor more serious illnesses develops.

Cane sugar kills westerners... sugary drinks and drinking alcohol and drugs.

Australia only scores high because going to a doctor is almost (but not quite (for some)) free. Baby vaccinations are free and medicine for the healthcare card holders is $5.00 a prescription.

I get what you are saying about the connection between improved health stats and religion. Utah is a religious state(Mormon) and perhaps the healthiest in the US.

The poor have free health care in the US through medicaid.  Anyone 138% of the poverty level or lower gets free government health care.

Also STD rates vary greatly by race in the US.

take for example HIV rates--
