We got hit by a lightning strike last night.
Major damage. ac_crying
But the best part is that it blew TWO holes out of a TILED floor on a concrete foundation. Not even a hand grenade could do that.
Mother nature was clearly pissed at us.

Oh my goodness Bricktop..
Thankfully you and anyone else under your roof at the time is unharmed.
No-one hurt.
We're looking at something around $25,000 damage to home and contents. But that will rise.
I have no idea how they're going to fix the floor. It took a massive hit in 2 places.
Most of our major electrical appliances are dead.
It even knocked out the internet connection AT THE NODE.
In other words, the surge hit our modem, travelled back along the line to the node and melted the whole thing.
Unbelievable force.
Get pictures...
You need to tell this story on Storm Chasers....

That's terrible. I don't know anyone who has sustained lightning damage. And you had a lot of damage from the strike of lightning.
It's a catastrophe. Most of our electrical devices are dead.
The shrapnel damage is astonishing. When it hit it sounded like a bomb had detonated, but we had no idea of the damage until the morning.
A house 2 doors down also suffered minor damage. But we got the brunt of it.
Was your Realdoll plugged in at the time?
Looks like hell is coming twice.

It's cool. We have insurance and the assessor will be out bright and early in the morning.
As bad as it seems, I think of those poor souls in the recent Queensland floods, and those caught in bushfires and I'm reminded this is easily resolved and we'll move on with no disruption.
It's just a pain to have to go through all the insurance rigmarole and homegoods replacement.
Don't you have an earth thingy running from your roof to the ground incase you are struck?

It's colder than a whore's heart for more than half the year on my farm. But, I have never had any weather related damage to to my house or any out buildings. I've weather related crop damage, but that's an occupational hazard.

ULINE Canada sells them..
I never thought we had any need of them, but after reading your story and of course Bricktop's maybe I should reconsider.
A surge protector won't help against a direct hit by lightning. They are there to protect against power surges through the electrical grid.
A lightning strike hits the house with hundreds of thousands of volts in an explosive jolt.
Seriously, it felt like the house was hit by a missile. I asked the electrician why our surge protector failed and he said nothing could protect against a direct hit that drove holes into solid tile and concrete.
But the important thing is no-one was hurt, not even the pooch.
Having physical disconnects is all one can do. Or lightening rods, which aren't very common anymore. Getting replacement bulbs is also sometimes tricky.
I take that back. They've gone hi tech and it's Aussie.

Yep... My grapevine was hit but not a direct bolt and the crack was straight over my head forcing me to go inside... when I joined a fb group and showed the evidence, a well known expert called me a liar... that spun my head in, I went into full flame and troll mode, got kicked out of the group and banned... so I made my own group.... that group is going strong. Lightning comes up from the ground too.... my grapevines are staked with metal pegs.
The experts said my pictures are the resulting of a "rolling lens"... but there was not one bolt but TWO bolts and and thankfully, I have the original vid where strike and thunder sound together and the "microwaved" branch of a perfect grapevine without blemish expect the struck piece... I just went on the group to warn people to be careful.
You were lucky no one was injured or worse.... You were instinctively worried about lightning... Imagine if you took my advice and tried to capture some. You'd be dead now... so God was obviously sending you a message NOT to film lightning. That's how I'm looking at it.
This is the rolling lens that they said I faked which is untrue... it's not fake but definitely I later found out is a "rolling lens" problem.

Original footage in real time but it was the LATTER strike... that was the problem... It's a mintute after the first so be patient..

Here is the grape vine several hours later... The expert said my grapevine was injured enough...(the wanker is WRONG)

Oh my goodness caskur.
Just found another hole in the concrete floor in the corner of the garage, right next to the garage door guide rail. No guesses needed as to why it grounded there...
Right next to the Honda S2000!!!!
Some debris on the car, but otherwise unharmed.
Whew.
This thread isn't about what happened to me but it's my area of novice expertise (ha ha).. They (my lightning groupies) said something about metal... I was explaining to them how lightning comes up out of the ground (most of the people hadn't really heard that) but it does. So then Kurt reminded me the grapevines were staked with metal piping... The only thing I don't have a picture of is the leaves on the vine 3 hours after the strike where only the edges were browned. It wasn't until the end of the day the whole length of vine was dead.... And a branch of the tree was dead but it took me two years to notice a branch of the tree died a slow death.
In effect we all were right... they were right about this "rolling lens" problem... And I was right about being struck but it was on the SECOND strike that was the probable cause...The strike that cracked over my roof and woke up the sleeping members on my house.
Metal stake under the dead branch..

That's a lot of damage to Bricktop's house, but it could have been a lot worse. And already life is returning to normal.

How awful. Still, it is good news that no one was hurt inside your house.
Jupiter has sent you a warning.
God of Thunder is Thor...
Tho thorry.
Please don't preach to me about Mythology. You can preach to me about matters I am not well-versed in. I know my Greek and Roman Gods. To the Romans, Jupiter was the equivalent of the Greek Zeus. In all my mythology books, Jupiter or Zeus held the lightning in his mighty hands. A thunder did not hit Bricktop's property, did it?

Well, our insurance guys are on the ball. They've already ordered a new oven and air conditioning unit for next week.
Happily, no hot days are forecast for a week or so, only cold weather...25C.
We can wear sweaters during that time.
Just the three items so far...a/c, oven and pool equipment have kicked over $11K.
I cannot believe people who don't insure.

Worse I have experienced was a 3ft dia big oak getting literally split in half, top to into the ground, about 20 ft from our bedroom. Literally flew out of bed when it hit.

We sustained a lot of water damage during the 2013 flood, but we never worried about our safety.
Everything is going to be fine.
All the neighbours are coming over to see the damage. We're neighbourhood celebrities!!!
Others have suffered damage, and are still waiting for their insurance assessors to come and assess their claim.
Our claim is being settled as I type. Our insurer is BRILLIANT.
So far we're getting a new ducted air conditioner unit, a new stove and a new washing machine just to reduce the inconvenience. Other goods will be sorted next week.
I don't know what they're doing about the floor yet. There is a worry that the explosion may have cracked the concrete slab which will be a nightmare if true. It's unlikely, I think.

The issue is not Thor, Zeus, or Jupiter. The issue here really is your pursuit to prove me wrong but this backfired because I was right in the first place. Now you want to make yourself look more foolish by saving face giving excuses for your ignorance especially by making the idiotic comment, "Tho thorry." Do you not see how hilariously stupid that was? :laugh3: You got a dose of your own medicine but you are unable to take it?
Mythology existed in many cultures but the most popular, the most universal one that was studied by most is Greek mythology. So influential was Greek mythology that we are using English words today that are firmly rooted in Greek mythology. Such examples are the following:
These are presented in this order: the Greek word or name (followed by a description) > the English word derived from the Greek (followed by a definition).
Atlas (a Titan who was condemned to carry the heavens upon his shoulders) > atlas (book of maps)
Clotho (the youngest of the Three Fates who spun the thread of life) > cloth (material made by weaving)
Chronos (God of time) > chronology (events in order of time)
Erôs (God of love and sexual desire) > erotic (sexual in nature)
Hypnos (God of sleep) > hypnosis (a sleep-like state of consciousness)
Hêlios (God of the sun) > heliotrope (plant that turns towards the sun)
Khaos (the void from which all life sprang) > chaos (confusion, disorder)
Muses (Goddesses of the arts and science) > musical (of or like music)
Narcissus (a beautiful man who fell in love with his own reflection) > narcissism (extreme love of self)
Nectar (drink of the gods) > nectar, nectarine (sweet plant secretion, fruit)
Ôkeanos (God of the river Oceanus, the source of the Earth's fresh water) > ocean (large body of water)
Typhon (known as the storm giant and father of all monsters) > typhoon (huge rotating tropical storm)
Zephyrus (God of the west wind) > zephyr (gentle west wind)
Moreover, Greek myths live on in English expressions, not Norse or others:
Herculean Task
Trojan Horse
Achilles' Heel
Cutting the Godian Knot
The Midas Touch
Pandora's Box
Whatever you're trying to prove, you did not succeed in educating me. Also, learn this tip for future assholery: If you're going to make an ass of yourself, do your research first, not the other way around. "Tho thorry." Too funny.
I don't have to prove you wrong... there is no right or wrong... you have Roman Gods, Greek Gods and Scandinavian Gods.. According to Wiki which can be at times incorrect, Thor is the Germanic God of Thunder and Lightning... shut up already.... nobody gives a shit.
