Facebook CEO calls for more outside regulation
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg called for new global regulations governing the internet, recommending overarching rules on hateful and violent content, election integrity, privacy and data portability.
in a statement that was also published as an op-ed in The Washington post, Zuckerberg said the company is seeking regulations that would set baselines for prohibited content and require companies to build systems for keeping harmful content to a minimum.
"We have a responsibility to keep people safe on our services," he said. "That means deciding what counts as terrorist propaganda, hate speech and more. We continually review our policies with experts, but at our scale we'll always make mistakes and decisions that people disagree with."
Zuckerberg's comments mark his most visible effort so far to shape the discourse around the way the company collects information, uses and disperses it around the world.
Facebook has been the target of probes by various governments after news broke about a year ago that it allowed the personal data of tens of millions of users to be shared with political consultancy Cambridge analytica.
Earlier this month, Facebook came under fire for how long the company took remove a live video of a shooting in new Zealand and allowing it to be circulated across the internet. Millions of users also had personal information accessed via a recent breach.
over the past year, lawmakers have focused greater scrutiny on the company and its immense influence, asking its executives — including Zuckerberg— to testify in front of Congress to explain the proliferation of misinformation, hate speech and election manipulation on the platform. in his op-ed, Zuckerberg proposes that "regulation could set baselines for what's prohibited and require companies to build systems for keeping harmful content to a bare minimum."
The tech industry has long said that Section 230 of the Communications decency act is vital to its ability to operate open platforms. The provision exempts companies from being liable for user-generated content.
Facebook built a contentscanning system that over the years has added rules based on reactions to changes in user behaviour or public uproar after an occurrence such as the new Zealand mass shooting. last week, the company moved to ban from its platform content that references white nationalism or white separatism.
When the website's users or computer systems report posts as problematic, they're sent to one of the company's 15,000 content moderators around the world, who are allowed to take content down only if it violates a rule.
But that process is not always precise. "lawmakers often tell me we have too much power over speech, and frankly i agree," Zuckerberg wrote in Saturday's post. "i've come to believe that we shouldn't make so many important decisions about speech on our own."
Zuckerberg said Facebook would welcome common standards for verifying political actors, citing practices deployed by advertisers in many countries of verifying identities before buying political ads. He also suggested updating laws to include "divisive political issues" in addition to candidates and elections. "Every day we make decisions about what speech is harmful, what constitutes political advertising, and how to prevent sophisticated cyberattacks," he said. "But if we were starting from scratch, we wouldn't ask companies to make these judgments alone.

I can't stand that little prick Zuckerberg.
What he is, in effect, saying is that he wants Governments to act as censors on the web to alleviate the responsibility from organisations like Facebook.
This will, of course, open up a whole new can of worms. We're already seeing freedom of speech eroded in many countries.
Zuckerberg's tactic is all too obvious, however. He is saying "if you governments want censorship on the web, YOU do it", full in the knowledge that procuring global consistency on controlling freedom of speech is impossible.
What is a more likely outcome is that social media operators will require a licence in the countries it wishes to conduct its business. Licences will be issued by governments, and they will be subject to monitoring and controls to ensure they comply with the laws of the the respective countries.

Quote
The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has ordered Christian activist William Whatcott to pay $55,000 to trans activist Morgane Oger.
Tribunal member Devyn Cousineau said $35,000 was compensation for a hate-filled flyer that Whatcott published when Oger was running for provincial office in 2017, and $20,000 was to punish Whatcott for improper conduct during the five-day hearing in December.
According to the tribunal ruling, Whatcott printed 1,500 of the flyers and distributed them in the Vancouver-False Creek riding that Oger was contesting as an NDP candidate. The flyer had a photo of Oger, described her as a "biological male" and claimed she was promoting "homosexuality and transvestism." It went on to state transsexuals were prone to sexually transmitted diseases and at risk of domestic violence, alcohol abuse and suicide.
The flyer concluded, "Thankfully Jesus Christ paid the price for your sin. You can turn to the merciful Christ and ask for forgiveness and when the NDP come knocking at your door you can tell them, you wont vote for them because you believe in God's definition of gender and marriage."

DOCUMENTARY ABOUT GOOGLE'S POWER MIGHT BE CHANGING THE CONVERSATION ABOUT BIG TECH
https://dailycaller.com/2019/04/08/google-facebook-creepy-line-big-tech/?utm_medium=email
A documentary detailing the extent to which Facebook and Google profit by exploiting and manipulating nearly every facet of their users' lives came out about six months ago, and some are claiming it is starting to change the conversation about big tech.
The title of the documentary, "The Creepy Line," got its name from an infamous 2010 speech by then-Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who said it was his company's policy "to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it."
The documentary has interviews with several high-profile public figures, including clinical psychologists Dr. Jordan Peterson and Dr. Robert Epstein, who explain how, in their estimation, these tech giants hold great power that threatens society.
The Daily Caller interviewed the film's director, M.A. Taylor, on how the general perception of Google and Facebook has changed since the movie's debut.
"The film's arguments have been considered. Really, probably the biggest show of force was with the [Google CEO] Sundar Pichai hearings, where research from the film was brought up many, many times on both sides of the aisle—whether the Democrats were denouncing it or the Republicans were promoting it," Taylor stated. "So I think, you know, you don't get a more direct response than having the CEO of Google asked specifically about things that we had in our film."
He went on to call Pichai's testimony in front of the House Judiciary Committee last December "a large part of our goal" in making the film.
Pichai was peppered with questions about political biases from Republican lawmakers like Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. Committee members also asked him about leaked communications published by The Daily Caller News Foundation in November. The documents showed the tech giant's employees debated burying conservative media outlets in Google's search function as a response to President Donald Trump's election.
Many Democrats spent the hearing dismissing claims of anti-conservative bias.
What Google and Facebook did not discuss during hearing on white nationalism.
Quote
Facebook executives did not provide many details during a congressional hearing Tuesday about why their algorithms are unable to distinguish the difference between hate speech and legitimate conservative content.
Tech experts argue that the tools Facebook, Twitter and Google use to moderate content might not be up to the task.
Google and Facebook told Congress Tuesday that their algorithms make mistakes and sometimes nix content that does not specifically violate company policies.
Google and Facebook executives were grilled Tuesday over their inability to govern white nationalism on their platforms, but they gave few answers about why their algorithms are dinging conservative content.
Neil Potts, Facebook's director of public policy, and Alexandria Walden, counsel for free expression and human rights at Google, spoke to the House Judiciary Committee alongside activists of the Anti-Defamation League, among other groups. House lawmakers asked the two executives about the effectiveness of their artificial intelligence.
That's why hate speech and violent extremism have no place on YouTube," Walden said during the House Judiciary Committee, noting what Google is doing to combat white nationalism on its platform. Walden and Potts also noted that their algorithms sometimes have a difficult time fleshing out the difference between legitimate forms of speech and language that is not permitted.
"We don't and we won't always get it right, but we've improved significantly," Potts added, referring to Facebook's new stance on nixing white nationalism. He noted that the company is not prohibiting people from expressing their love for country and community, but it does not permit bigotry and hatred. Walden made similar comments.
"Hate speech removals can be particularly complex compared to other types of content," she said. "Hate speech, because it often relies on spoken rather than visual ques, is sometimes harder to detect that some forms of branded terrorist propaganda. It's intensely content specific." Neither executive gave a detailed explanation of as to whether either company is capable of making these distinctions.
Conservatives meanwhile argue that Facebook is targeting them because of their politics. President Donald Trump's social media director Dan Scavino Jr., for instance, was temporarily blocked in March from making public Facebook comments.

Liberals treating racism like an electoral prop — that's wrong
It looks like Prime Minister Justin trudeau may have found some inspiration in the Jussie smollett case and has himself decided to cry racism as a Pr ploy.
"white supremacy has no place in Canada," trudeau posted to social media the other day. we'd certainly agree with that statement. but trudeau didn't leave it at that.
"It's time for all parties, including Andrew scheer's Conservative Party, to stand together in denouncing hatred in all its forms," trudeau continued.
It's part of a larger drive-by smear, an attempt to imply in the lead up to the election that scheer is somehow supportive of or in allegiance with white supremacists. It's a completely groundless accusation, which is why they're so vague in making it. but their goal is to clearly plant the seed.
border security Minister bill blair went one step further in his accusations: "white nationalism is a threat to Canada and the safety of our communities," he posted. "Andrew scheer panders to people promoting these hateful views. This isn't leadership."
This all came after the Liberals pounced upon comments made by Conservative senator Leo Housakos who was pressing Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland to be more specific in her suggestion that Canada was somehow a cesspool of white supremacy that places us in grave danger.
because Housakos was reluctant to believe that our streets have been overrun with violent white supremacists and that Canadians are somehow weak-willed enough to fall prey en masse to such an awful ideology, the Liberals are trying to shamelessly twist it into something it's not. It's pretty weak sauce.
It's interesting timing that they're playing this cynical game, because the Liberals are now being denounced by refugee advocates for changes that make it more difficult to claim asylum if you've crossed into Canada illegally at places like roxham road.
Canadians should welcome these changes to the asylum rules. but it sure came at a cost. The Liberals dragged their feet on this file for years and whenever anyone wanted action on this unsustainable situation they called these people racist and other nasty names.
Are the Liberals racist now for clamping down on the border? of course not.
This should be a lesson for them about how reckless it is to toss around these sorts of terms.

YouTube has removed a video of a public health roundtable hosted by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) with a panel of scientists and researchers who challenged the effectiveness of COVID-19 lockdowns and masks, claiming the discussion violated its Community Guidelines.
The roundtable, which took place at the state Capitol on March 18 and was streamed and posted to YouTube by WTSP-TV, featured former Trump White House coronavirus adviser Dr. Scott Atlas, epidemiologist Professor Sunetra Gupta, and researchers Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Dr. Martin Kulldorff.
The scientists and researchers discussed how public policy measures adopted during the pandemic to mitigate spread of the virus, including quarantining healthy people, shutting businesses down, and mandating mask-wearing, were inspired in part by fear rather than by scientific evidence.
Dr. Bhattacharya called lockdowns "the single biggest public health mistake in history" and argued they failed to protect vulnerable populations like senior citizens from contracting COVID-19. The panel discussed evidence that contradicted some studies that suggest lockdowns may have saved millions of lives globally.

Facebook Has No Plans of Notifying More Than 530 Million Users Whose Data Was Leaked (//https)
A Facebook spokesperson said on Wednesday that the tech company didn't notify the more than 530 million users whose personal data was obtained through inappropriate means, further noting that they don't have the intention to do so either.
Business Insider first reported the data leak which included information about user's phone numbers, Facebook IDs and names, locations, email, and birthdays.
A Facebook spokesperson told Reuters it also took into account that users could not fix the issue and that the data was publicly available in deciding not to notify users.
The collected information, however, could potentially cause valuable data hacks or prompt other mistreatment.
While the information appears to be several years old, but it's another example of the vast amount of information collected by Facebook and other social media sites, and the limits to how secure that information is.

Jason Whitlock suspended by Twitter after criticizing Black Lives Matter leader — but he refuses to bow to social media giant to get his account back
'I'm not running to go post Twitter bail when I did nothing wrong'
Conservative journalist Jason Whitlock was suspended by Twitter after he criticized Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors for her $1.4 million home purchase in "1.4 percent" black Topanga Canyon in Southern California.
But Whitlock insisted Monday he has no intention of bowing to the social media giant in order to get his account unblocked: "I'm not running to go post Twitter bail when I did nothing wrong."
What's the background?
Khan-Cullors was sharply criticized last week over numerous reports that she had purchased the pricey home — particularly given her self-described Marxist ideology. What's more, reports noted that Khan-Cullors had purchased three other homes since 2016 for a grand total of $3.2 million in real estate.
Upon hearing the news, Hawk Newsome — leader of Black Lives Matter Greater New York City — demanded an "independent investigation."
Whitlock joined in on the criticism: "Black Lives Matter founder buys $1.4 million home in Topanga, which has a black population of 1.4 percent," he tweeted Friday. "She's with her people!"
Twitter told Whitlock that he violated the platform's rules for posting personal information about others without their permission.

The Twitter account of James O'Keefe, the founder of Project Veritas, was permanently suspended on April 15 following a series of recordings the undercover journalism nonprofit posted as part of an expose on CNN.
A CNN staffer was recently caught on hidden camera saying that the network worked during the 2020 presidential election to produce content that would help lead President Joe Biden to victory. Project Veritas published the first of three recordings on April 13.
Charlie Chester, a technical director at CNN, was secretly filmed by Project Veritas during a number of fake Tinder dates set up over the past month. He suggested that if it weren't for the network's "propaganda," former President Donald Trump would have been reelected in 2020.
"Look at what we did, we got Trump out," Chester said. "I am 100 percent going to say it. And I 100 percent believe it that if it wasn't for CNN, I don't know that Trump would have got voted out."
He told the undercover reporter, who pretended to be a nurse during the fake dates, that he decided to work at the network because he "wanted to be a part of that."
"Our focus was to get Trump out of office, right? Without saying it, that's what it was," Chester said.
Other videos showed that a CNN head had personally intervened to order the cable network's staff to display the number of people who have died of COVID-19 during a broadcast.
Facebook and Instagram Block Users From Sharing NY Post Report on BLM Co-Founder's Multi-Million-Dollar Property Purchases
Facebook and Instagram are censoring users from sharing a New York Post report regarding the luxury homes purchased by Black Lives Matter Co-founder, Patrisse Khan-Cullors, in predominantly white neighborhoods.
The article was published on April 10 and states that Cullors had purchased "four high-end homes for $3.2 million" in the United States since 2016.
She had also looked into purchasing a residence in the Bahamas at an ultra-exclusive resort where Justin Timberlake and Tiger Woods both have homes, according to the report.
The Post learned that apartments and townhouses at the beachfront Albany resort outside Nassau run from $5 million to $20 million.
Facebook users noticed on Thursday that they could not share the link to the Post's article on Cullors' multi-million-dollar property portfolio directly on their timeline or through the Messenger app.

Pro-mask social media melts down over updated CDC guidance, vows to wear masks indefinitely: 'Empowering anti-maskers and anti-vaxers'
Social media users have come out en masse against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's new guidance regarding masks, vowing to continue covering their faces indefinitely.
On Thursday, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky announced that fully vaccinated Americans can return to life without masks.
The directive was a full pivot from advice issued earlier in the month.
Prominent gun control activist David Hogg added, "I feel the need to continue wearing my mask outside even though I'm fully vaccinated because the inconvenience of having to wear a mask is more than worth it to have people not think I'm a conservative."
What else?
During Thursday's White House press briefing, Walensky said that Americans who have waited two weeks after receiving their second COVID-19 vaccine can return to mostly normal, pre-pandemic behaviors in the vast majority of settings.
In her remarks, Walensky said, "Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing. If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic. We have all longed for this moment, when we can get back to some sense of normalcy."
The infectious diseases expert added, "Based on the continuing downward trajectory of cases, the scientific data on the performance of our vaccines, and our understanding of how the virus spreads, that moment has come for those who are fully vaccinated."

CDC director widely mocked after claiming science 'evolved' on COVID vaccines to allow new mask guidance
After the CDC unveiled the new face mask guidance last week, Republicans immediately accused the Biden administration of a politically motivated decision, pointing to numerous crises facing President Joe Biden.
"While the new mask guidance is encouraging, the CDC and my Far Radical Left colleagues only chose to do this to distract from the consequences of catastrophic policy decisions that have been heard around the world," Rep. Andy Biggs, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, said.
"Inflation is rising, the Middle East is in shambles, the working class can't fill up their gas tanks, our border is being overrun and the Biden Administration's leadership is nowhere to be found," he added.
What did Walensky say?
Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Walensky denied her agency was motivated by politics when issuing their newest guidance.
Instead, Walensky claimed the science had "evolved" over the last two weeks revealing the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.
"We now have science that has really just evolved even in the last two weeks that demonstrates that these vaccines are safe, they are effective, they are working in the population, just as they did in the clinical trials, that they are working against our variants that we have here circulating in the United States, and that, if you were to develop an infection, while— even if you got vaccinated, that you can't transmit that infection to other people," Walensky said.
In fact, Walensky claimed the "science was really evolving as late as last Thursday."
What was the reaction?
Walensky was widely mocked after the interview. As critics pointed out, COVID vaccines have been proving their efficacy for more than five months now.
In fact, countries that have a high percentage of vaccinated people — Israel, the United States, Great Britain, for example — have experienced significant decreases in COVID cases and deaths.
Meanwhile, states that reopened and dropped mask mandates have not seen spikes in cases or deaths.

Big tech became a monopolized entity and a dictatorial shadow government under the Obama administration.
Are you saying he facilitated their rise?
Most definitely yes. Near the end of his administration, the extent of Obama's commitment to Silicon Valley became clear. And nowhere is that more evident than net neutrality, an issue where the president pressured the government to pass regulations with major implications for how consumers experience the Internet.
The rules, passed by the Federal Communications Commission, limit Internet providers from auctioning off the fastest download speeds to the highest bidders, all but ensuring that Web firms — not cable companies — will retain control of what consumers see on their browsers. It marked a major win for Silicon Valley, an industry that has built a close relationship with the president and his staff over the last six years.

In 2004, when Barack Obama was running for the U.S. Senate, he made his first visit to Google's campus and saw firsthand how a search on the Internet worked. It left such a strong impression that he returned during his first presidential run vowing to protect the industry.
Now, near the end of his administration, the extent of Obama's commitment to Silicon Valley has become clear. And nowhere is that more evident than net neutrality, an issue where the president pressured the government to pass regulations with major implications for how consumers experience the Internet.
The rules, passed Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission, limit Internet providers from auctioning off the fastest download speeds to the highest bidders, all but ensuring that Web firms — not cable companies — will retain control of what consumers see on their browsers. It marked a major win for Silicon Valley, an industry that has built a close relationship with the president and his staff over the last six years.
The affinity between the White House and the tech industry has enriched Obama's campaigns through donations, and it has presented lucrative opportunities for staffers who leave for the private sector.
In addition to net neutrality, Obama has supported immigration reforms favored by tech firms such as Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft and decried by labor unions. He has pushed for patent reforms that Google and Apple have championed. The president even sided with the tech industry — and against dependable Democratic allies in Hollywood — to block a copyright bill in early 2012.

This (rather long) video shines a light on the real issue of censorship and control on social media platforms; these organisations are PRIVATELY owned companies, and can do what they like with their product.
What this means is that bringing in laws to control them will have overflow effects on a wide range of private media companies. It is a principle of western democratic governments that you cannot implement laws targeting a specific individual or organisation.
The only way these corporations will change their conduct is if their profits fall...in other words, people stop using their platforms.
It will need other entrepreneurs to invest in similar service platforms and differentiate themselves from the other players in the market.
It is a mystery to me why this hasn't happened already in western democracies. Surely, the opportunity to create a less politically motivated media platform is begging for investment.

What social media alternative to Twitter was deplatformed due to economic boycott on Apple? I can't remember it's name.

Jennie Nguyen Fired After Her Controversial Facebook Posts Resurface
https://www.slice.ca/jennie-nguyen-fired-after-her-controversial-facebook-posts-resurface/
After only one season on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Jennie Nguyen has been officially fired from the series after fans discovered a series of controversial posts on her Facebook page. Over the span of about six months in 2020, Nguyen had reposted memes, photos and added her own commentary condemning Black Lives Matter, referring to protesters as "violent gangs" and "BLM thugs."
Fired for telling the truth.
Nice.
I wonder what would happen in America if it had decent industrial protection laws.

They do. Railway operating rules are almost identical on either side of the border.
Transport Unions have traditionally been able to enforce proper procedures for dismissal. But I suspect that is not the case in most American occupation if the examples cited in this forum are any guide. Being dismissed for criticising a political movement would never happen here.
It's only woke corporations and state civil services that people are getting sacked for speaking their minds. And even then, it has to be extremely uncommon.

Facebook has spent all week banning groups related to the peaceful Canadian Trucker Convoy as well as any groups working to organize the American Convoy. It's interesting that Facebook would ban these groups and yet did nothing to ban the Black Lives Matter groups that organized to burn down our cities a few years ago.
Far from a surprise.

Rock legend Alice Cooper recently said "I don't think rock 'n' roll and politics belong in the same bed together, but a lot of people think it does — because we have a voice, and we should use our voice. But again, rock 'n' roll should be anti-political, I think."
Cooper also told the outlet that his show is "designed to give you a vacation from CNN, you know what I mean? I'm not preaching anything up there, and I'm not knocking anybody.
A number of leftists didn't take kindly to Cooper declaring that rock should be free of politics and ripped him for it on Facebook:
"Alice Cooper can go back to golfing and using music as a nicey nice gothic entertainment moment," one commenter said. "Otherwise we need people who put their money and iZod shirts on the line for all sorts of injustice."
"Art should comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable," another commenter declared. "Clearly this rich septuagenarian is too comfortable."
"Cooper is out of touch," another commenter wrote. "The fact is some of the best songs are influenced by politics."
"Alice is a hardcore conservative Christian, so not at all surprising he said something so ridiculous," another commenter noted.
What is a "commentator" and why should we care what they say?

Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon revealed that Twitter had "locked out" the fake news publisher from its official account for alleged "hateful conduct."

Old Musk has the money. He should do it.

I know Elon Musk seems different from the parade of billionaire libtards who want to dictate our lives. However, I still don't trust him.

This may seem like a stupid question, but does Elon Musk have the ability to bring back Donald Trump?

He is the largest shareholder with 9.2% of shares. It's a still a very leftst social media platform. He will meet a lot of opposition if he pushes it.

I hope Elon Musk makes Twitter freer.
BOLD MOVE with an End in mind> Elon Musk offers to buy 100% of Twitter for $54 a share (//https)
Here is what Musk wrote in a letter to Twitter Chairman Bret Taylor, as disclosed in a new SEC filing.
"I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy.
However, since making my investment I now realize the company will neither thrive nor serve this societal imperative in its current form. Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company.
As a result, I am offering to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, a 54% premium over the day before I began investing in Twitter and a 38% premium over the day before my investment was publicly announced. My offer is my best and final offer and if it is not accepted, I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder.
Twitter has extraordinary potential. I will unlock it."
Twitter shares (TWTR) surged 13% in pre-market trading.
Twitter confirmed in a press release that it received Musk's offer and said the board of directors "will carefully review the proposal to determine the course of action that it believes is in the best interest of the Company and all Twitter stockholders."
"It would be hard for any other bidders/consortium to emerge and the Twitter board will be forced likely to accept this bid and/or run an active process to sell Twitter," said Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

I hope he buys Twitter and transforms into a platform for free speech.
Musk had said the offer would be his "best and final" one.
Asked by TED's Chris Anderson if there was a "Plan B" if his current offer were rejected, Musk said, "there is." (//https)
He declined to elaborate.

MSNBC anchor Katy Tur joined the meltdown by many on the left Thursday over the possibility of Elon Musk buying out Twitter and bringing free speech with fewer restrictions to the microblogging platform.
"I wonder," Tur added, stammering. "You know in talking about this, you know, it's kinda funny, oh, Elon Musk wants to buy it, but there are massive, life and globe-altering consequences for just letting people run wild on the thing."
Tur also expressed serious concern that Musk might allow former President Donald Trump back on Twitter after he was permanently banned in 2021. ac_toofunny
Twitter is reportedly considering a so-called "poison pill" tactic to thwart Elon Musk's effort to buy out the social media platform, prompting a critical response from the Tesla chief.

"Democracy Dies in Darkness" is the motto of the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post. It may sound like a warning, but more and more it seems like a summary of the left's aspirations to control debate and shut down any opposition.
A recent example of those aspirations appeared in a column by former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich on Tesla CEO Elon Musk's big buy of Twitter stock. The original headline — changed after widespread mockery — was this: "Elon Musk's vision for the Internet is dangerous nonsense: Musk has long advocated a libertarian vision of an 'uncontrolled' internet. That's also the dream of every dictator, strongman and demagogue."
sigh

Despite the weeping and gnashing of teeth by some employees, Musk has not announced any changes to Twitter.
After hearing the news Monday that multibillionaire Elon Musk purchased Twitter, Brian Stelter — CNN's chief media correspondent — wondered on air if folks will want to use Twitter if it offers them too much freedom, as Musk has made it clear he wants Twitter to open the free speech floodgates.

Facebook has censored Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn after she posted that gender-dysphoric male athletes should not compete in women's sports.
"Biological men have no place in women's sports," Blackburn wrote in a post shared to her personal Facebook page. It linked to a donation website that encouraged her supporters to "fight back against Big Tech censorship" by adding their names to her campaign email list and making a contribution, Fox News reported.

Twitter has suspended a doctor for sharing the study that shows men who received Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine had lower levels of semen and a loss in motile sperm count.
Dr. Andrew Bostom, with the Brown University Center For Primary Care and Prevention, shared the peer-reviewed study on June 19.
Twitter informed Bostom that the missive violated its policy against "spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19, according to a message reviewed by The Epoch Times. It suspended Bostom's account over the post.
"It seems to fit into the whole pattern of silencing open discussion," Bostom told The Epoch Times.
Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.

Australia's eSafety commissioner has issued Elon Musk's Twitter with a legal notice to explain what it is doing to tackle hate speech on its platform.
The commissioner says it has received "more complaints about online hate on Twitter in the past 12 months" than any other platform and alleges an "increasing number" of reports of serious online abuse since Musk took over in October 2022.
If Twitter fails to respond to the notice in 28 days, the tech giant will face a maximum fine of $700,000 (US$476,000) per day for "continuing breaches."
"We are seeing a worrying surge in hate online," said Julie Inman Grant in a statement on June 22.
"eSafety research shows that nearly 1 in 5 Australians have experienced some form of online hate. This level of online abuse is already inexcusably high, but if you're a First Nations [Indigenous] Australian, you are disabled or identify as LGBTIQ+, you experience online hate at double the rate of the rest of the population," she said.
To quote the Anti-Nowhere League, "so fucking what?" I've been the target of hate online AND offline, it didn't throw me in my stride any.

On a slightly related note, when I was young my father was tasked with the creation of the Canberra College of Advanced Education's language laboratory, as well as some side projects with the Canberra School of Music. More or less how I got started in the recording industry in fact, I was four or five when I saw my first recording studio session, a small orchestra being recorded live to two track, as well as an overwhelming collection of musical instruments that most bands at the time would have given their eye teeth for.
One night my father added a new tape to his collection. The first fifteen minutes of recording was a piece of synth generated "music" that advanced students were being tasked with identifying. A very jarring collection of noise to the average person used to an eight note musical scale, being that it was composed on a five note musical scale, not eight. The remainder of the tape was a recording that had been banned in England and much of Europe some years before... a kind of "sound poetry" piece whose creator (a Swedish ex-fighter pilot) had made concerning the governmental corruption, the brainwashing of the student population and the military actions being waged against rebel forces in Rhodesia.
https://voca.ro/18u7JnzlOyF3
Needless to say, he was up against some pretty stiff opposition getting it committed to vinyl. Which is kind of a pity because Ian Smith was a warmongering totalitarian cunt wholly unworthy of the meat shielding conducted on his behalf by foreign elites and responsible for eliminating much of the moderate opposition that might have given Rhodesia a better chance than the succession of Utter Fail that ended in that Marxist Robert Mugabe.
For my part, I was fortunate enough to have access to the recorded pastiche at a young age, something that would not have happened had my parents adhered to the wishes of various governments who would sooner have squashed dissenting voices by denying access to them. And there have been a number of times throughout my formative years where the veil of accepted historical account has been lifted from my eyes... say with the constitutional crisis of 1975 for example, or Captain James Cook's diaries for another. Man, the shit that guy ran against the boongs on the north-east coast, I'm not surprised they speared him one.
The things we're not allowed to know...

Sounds like they're going through the exact same problem as Hong Kong ac_unsure , taxes might attractively low, due to to this Hongkong's government relies on making their money through controlling all the property prices by selling land slowly to developers. Big Tech search engines appear to be censoring the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to reports from multiple users.
The New York Post reported Sunday that Google's "Autocomplete" feature failed to populate results for the deadly July 13 attack. When typing "the assassination attempt of" into the search bar, the autofill did not show results related to Trump, the news outlet stated. Additionally, the Post found that Google did not generate an autogenerated suggestion when typing in "Trump assassination attempt."
Google's search results still feature articles regarding the shooting.
Other Big Tech companies also seemed to be censoring the recent assassination attempt on Trump. Similar to Google, Bing's search engine did not autofill "Trump" when typing in "assassination attempt on." Instead, it generated results including "president," "fdr 1933," "Reagan," "Ronald Reagan," and "George Wallace."
