A South African national has been arrested a day after he flew into Sydney to receive almost 70 kilograms of cocaine in blocks stamped with images of Che Guevara, police say.
The $34 million shipment was detected when it arrived in Sydney earlier this month.

I have no respect for South Africans anymore. Didn't Russia accept a whole bunch of white ones? Looks like they'll be setting up ther drugs and illegal prostitution over there in Russia too.

That is a lot of drugs..
Two young women from Quebec were recently convicted for smuggling large quantities of drugs into Australia.
Australia is rife with drug smugglers targeting us.
It's so so sad.
It makes me really angry.
As soon my husband comes home, I get distracted and my typos increase.

Yes, it is.

Petty crime.
I blame the government for all petty crime. They have quadrupled the price of cigarettes, and the dole has been stagnant for 2 decades.
Homelessness has sky rocketed and idiot wannabe Prime Ministers tell people we live in the greatest country on earth...
We live in a country of drug dealers and drug fucked mental patients.
And Freud.
Don't forget Freud.
Yeah... Yanks here for their free medicare...
them too.

The price of cigarettes has increased significantly here too, but I don't know if it's caused an increase in any crime besides buying tax free tobacco from Aboriginal reserves.
A packet of 20 cigarettes in Australia is $25. 50% of that is tax for the government.
It going to rise more. It is supposed to be a deterrent to smoking but all it's done has been to increase petty crime.

When I quit smoking, I was paying about $100 for a carton of 200 cigarettes. That's 12.50 for a pack of 25 smokes. They cost more in other provinces. And the price has gone up quite a bit since then.

They're going to raise the smokes to $50 eventually... Our government are out of touch. We have elections soon, and as far as I'm concerned, there is no one to vote for.
You should be very proud you gave up. Well done.

Really. All generic. I have never heard of that.
If Australia truly wants everyone to quit smoking, just ban cigarette production and sales and forego the tax revenue. Let the black market pick up the slack. Something tells me they are not that serious about ending smoking.
tsk... watch that video I put on... It's an historical and advant-garde approach and Australia took on the tobacco industry and WON.

Baby steps, I think.
30 years ago, if people had suggested smoking would be banned in pubs, bars and public events they would have been laughed at.
Yet it is now banned from ALL public places, and Melbourne is trialling "smoking zones" in the city area which will be the ONLY place smokers can light up. Needless to say they are well away from major thoroughfares and rather inhospitable.
I suspect that within 10 years, cigarettes will indeed be banned from Australia.
And of course, these tobacco companies are American.
If you can't solve a problem with a gun, hire a lawyer.

Smoking is a cash cow for provinces and the feds. Australia is no different. They know it won't go away if they ban cigarette sales. But the billions in revenue will be.

No.
Pharmaceuticals are heavily controlled through the universal health care system. If a doctor was over prescribing a specific drug, a red flag is raised warranting further enquiry.
Some drugs require authorisation before being prescribed.
