I thought California had stricter gun controls.
The US wouldn't know what gun control is!!!
It's to keep guns OUT of the average person's hands, not IN them.

While I hate to reduce this kind of event to just thinking tactically or strategically, I get the impression that there was good security overall and plenty of police presence. I get the impression that even though the shooter was all geared up and had plenty of ammo, he may have only had time for one reload before he was tapped. Sounds like from the moment the shooter went live, it was all over within one minute.
Evidently there was an accomplice who may or may not have been a shooter, who is still at large.

People dying left and right cause of many things other than guns, yet I never see you wanting to end anything else.
Suppose they tried making alcohol illegal again, because too many people being idiots, drunk driving, domestic abuse, etc. Wouldnt you be mad, not being able to drink again? Its not the alcohol, its choices one makes with alcohol. Same with a gun, the gun is not the killer, its the person behind the trigger.

Probably. Kaliphonia loves government control.
If today is an average day, over 100 people will die in automobile accidents in the US (world wide it will be over 3,000)
So here's what I propose, not a full ban on cars, but rather some major restrictions, like you can only use your car for necessary trips--
for instance-- to the grocery store and to work (and only if you can't get there by public transportation) .
That weekend trip to see Grandma, go on vacation? Nope, no can do, that trip to see a movie or eat at a nice restaurant? nope, just necessary trips from now on. Think of all the lives it would save--literally millions.

It's not as though anything Brick posts on a Canadian message board from Oz is going to have the slightest effect on US gun laws and gun culture.
However, as a US citizen I AM quite aware that my lifetime odds of dying from a deliberate gunshot (not counting a police assassination, suicide by gun, or a gun accident) ...dying from getting shot by somebody else, either for fun or as part of a mass shooting, are about one out of 316.
To put it another way, that sort of death is more likely to come to me than death from the combined risks of drowning, fire and smoke, stabbing, choking on food, airplane crashes, animal attacks, and natural disasters.
For perspective, heart disease (the #1 cause of death) is 45 times MORE likely to kill me, and dying inside a vehicle is nearly 3 times MORE likely to be my end.
I've grown accustomed to these odds, but I have to admit that I hate that all my grandkids have to live with them too.

Also, if you stay out of bad neighborhoods those odds become far lower yet. Most gun related homicides are in high crime urban areas and are committed by gang members, often against other rival gang members.
Less than one percent of all gun homicide victims are from media headline-grabbing mass shootings.

No, of course not. I only do it to introduce the very faint possibility of a balance into the rightie nest that BC is. Or, some suggest, just for the sole purpose of pissing people off.
But more seriously, I think it's a bit of a reach to describe my politics as "progressive" in the sense most BCers use the term, and certainly incorrect to suggest that I "advocate" them.
Well, the point I'm making is that we all raise issues we feel strongly about, regardless of the cosmopolitan makeup of our audience.
But, I shall be honest and admit that I believe that if enough people shine a light on an issue, no matter where it is, others might think "maybe we're wrong" and perhaps reconsider their position. If Americans realise there are other nations who don't permit wholesale gun ownership yet live in relative safety and security they will accept that a modern civilised community does not need lethal weaponry to maintain peace.

I feel stupid pointing out to your moronic drivel that California has a 21 or older long rifle law now and the shooter purchased his rifle and a shotgun with background checks in a different state and transported them back to California. Hence background checks don't work for pop off shooters with no criminal background and the State will never be able to stop those with quiet intentions from acquiring what they need over any obstacle.
So your entire premise is a massive fail, inhumane, and responsible for every disarmed mass shooting event, you cowardly subhuman filth.

"If enough people shine a light on an issue.....", this is the equivalent of what Soros is doing, with Black Lives Matter, and ANTIFA. So since they are shining so much light, I should agree with what they are saying? I should accept the mob mentality? Think I'll pass. PETA seems like they are shining light on things, that I shouldnt eat meat, maybe they are right too.
There are nations that have an armed society ya know, I think Sweden is one of them, and they have some of the lowest rates of crime. Why is that Brick, because they have common sense! They are trained in gun safety and such. Here its voluntary, but I took gun safety, as everyone should. Now THAT would be a law I would want to see passed, that EVERYONE take a gun safety class.

Because its my right? Its my right to defend myself. Its my right to defend my country, just in case.
The people behind the scenes of the USA I dont have much faith in, and they are not exactly known to be the most honest folks with our best intentions in mind. One small example, when they made alcohol illegal, they put poison in the barrels, killing 10,000 people. Did you know there are over 100 deep underground shelters, that the average citizen does not know about? They are not for the citizens, but the Elite, that will be funneled in to the Denver airport when the shit hits the fan or elsewhere. They are all connected with magnetic rail systems. THEY are planning something, and the average citizen will be caught off guard when it happens. So the question really is, why do I NOT need a gun?

I never said "allow anything" lol. You silly ninny muggins.
I wont go into alcohol again, I feel I made my point.
Guns have no redeeming quality, I say poppycock! Is that what the Colonials said, when the British went to war with the US, that guns have no redeeming quality? If that were the case, the world would be vastly different today indeed. Better to have one when needed, than not have one at all when shit hits the fan.
No Brick, if my grandchild died, I would be outraged, wanting vengeance, upon the fucker that did that vile thing, not the gun itself. He could of killed my grandchild with a number of things, ran him or her over with a car for instance. Its always the person, not the tool.

There's no need for THAT sort of language, you daft dippy dingbat!!!
I imagine the lunatic that killed the 6 year old kid at a family fun day told the shop he bought it from in conformity with America's gun laws that it was his "right" to carry arms.
Sweden is not a good example for 2 reasons;
1. "Guns are capable of harmful and fatal consequences;and gun laws are quite stringent in Sweden. To be a gun owner requires a license, and this is tightly controlled by regulations. A potential gun owner needs to meet requirements to be granted a license. "
2. Comparing YOUR nation and culture to others is a red herring. Your country has a violent culture and is divided by hatred and animosity. Throwing guns into that mix is asking for carnage. And you can be damn sure if there is a mass shooting in Sweden, they will clamp down on gun ownership in a heartbeat.
Citing your "right" to defend yourself against others is why your country is in this mess in the first place.
If you are invaded, an event about as likely as Hillary becoming President (and probably preferable) the invader will be a modern well equipped military force. No civilian militia would last 5 minutes against tanks, helicopters, cruise missiles and warplanes. Even if the opposing force was your own army, you would stand no chance of defending yourself.
And 90% of these "I've got a gun...I'm gonna fight" big talkers would drop their firearms and piss their pants when bullets start whizzing over their heads. It's a terrifying experience.
You don't NEED a gun, Blaze. You WANT a gun because it makes you feel safe...it makes you feel strong...it makes you feel AMERICAN.
And turns you into a target.
One thing that always gets overlooked. Talk is cheap and easy .. but no matter what, guns are embedded physically (100s of millions that ain't goin nowhere) .. and embedded in the physic of America ... and all the talking (c/w arguments c/w implications of logic) in the world will never change that
Not many think of it in all the ways Blaze does. Most have their own much less dramatic reasons / arguments .. most simply just grew up with it as a normal .. most know well the old "if you took guns away from good people, only bad people will have guns"
In fact, foreigners telling them they are wrong only results in ingraining it deeper. It might be a surprise to you but the US does not see Oz as an equal, much less superior in any way
.. so will never be open to nor affected positively by opinions from some island of 20 m people in the middle of the ocean 1/2 way round the world .

I get what all you're saying, but I still stand by my decisions. Im not one to cower in a corner. That wasnt ingrained into my DNA. My ancestors fought for what was right, in the revolutionary war and the Civil war. Won one, not the other, but we still fought for what was right.
For instance, when the North invaded the South, they raped, robbed, pillaged, and burned crops and homes of the Southerners. Should such a thing ever happen again, I dont think I could watch my lady getting raped, my son beheaded, and everything I've worked hard for burned to the ground.

You are right CC, not everyone thinks the same about guns here. Some are dramatically against, some are for, but for many different reasons. I wasnt raised around guns, other than the one my mom carried in her purse lol. I wanted one at an early age and wanted to hunt. I took my gun safety class in 7th grade, it was even offered in the school system, they brought rifles and such to show. This needs to come back in my opinion.

Politics are so divided in the USA, that might just happen.
I think "might" is a little optimistic.
I think the chances are higher that armed conflict is inevitable.
America is collapsing daily.
THEY want another civil war, they been trying for a while, and keep getting closer and closer. And yes this place feels like its on the verge of it, but not there yet. It wont be North vs South this time. Nostrodamus predicted around this time there would be a race war, and with the current trend I can see that, adding in the hate for the white man. THEY will go underground when this happens, THEY have over 100 D.U.M.B.s already built that connect with magnetic railway systems. Average citizens dont know about them. Then martial law will be declared, and I can see it getting much worse from there.

It must have just happened....I didn't see anything about it on Global Calgary this morning.
Last hour or so - They are now saying "Multiple suspects" in custody - that's rare for it to not be a loner
sorry, missed Shen's post
UPdate from cops live - "mentioned only 1 in custody" ... "they have reports of shooting in several areas"
Very different here - "commander on the ground" .. very smart upfront cop giving early update of all they have at moment - last shooting, cops did not speak for several hours and waited for mayor, chief etc etc .. it wasn't till finally the "commander on the ground" at the end spoke that we got anything of meaning
News source - "17 sent to hospitals" - "several" killed .. "started in parking lot > then into store"
"many ran out through stockroom and employees put them in truck shipping containers"
Oh my God. Are the suspects known to authorities?
1 (only) caught alive (likely an achievement by police)
one of several hospitals reports they have 9 "critical" but stable "- While nothing has been stated by police on numbers, there may be very large numbers of various casualties
new - another hospital "13 in all, one has died"

FNC reports 15 dead.
But we don't need no gun control because we're going to have a civil war and black people will rape and rob us if we're not armed.
I guess one way to make space in the asylum is to give the inmates guns.

Its not the civil war that scares them..
Its the numerous rapes, murders, assaults, home invasions committed by the "victims of society".

Law enforcement sources say police identified the suspect as Patrick Crusius, 21, from the Dallas area
Multiple senior law enforcement officials believe Crusius posted a screed online just prior to the attack. They say investigators are examining a posting they suspect is from him but that they have not officially confirmed it.
The sources said it was too soon to draw any motives from the posting.
El Paso police Chief Gregory K. Allen said at an evening news conference that the crime appears to have "a nexus at this point in time to a hate crime."
However FBI special agent in charge of the El Paso office, Emmerson Buie, said it was too early to determine if this was indeed a hate crime and that the investigation into a motive continued.
"We're reviewing all the evidence," Buie said.

I´m getting mixed signals.
Lots about "anti-Mexican infiltration of US society"
I suppose more Mexicans in El Paso, but for sure not all are. Not sure why he would shoot mixed group if he wanted Mexicans ... then he doesn't seem very smart
From what I see - His so-called manifesto is all over the map - full of excuses / "reasons" - very much "we are being replaced by Mexicans" .. "Trump will be blamed, but I started planning well before he came along ... rambles on and on
Just another whackjob enabled by a Government that lacks the fortitude to take guns away from the noisy mob.
In the manifesto he says he chose a gun-free zone as his target for obvious reasons.
"Remember: it is not cowardly to pick low hanging fruit. AKA Don't attack heavily guarded areas to fulfill your super soldier COD fantasy. Attack low security targets."

This morning 1 am Dayton Ohio - 10 dead, 27 injured- Full body armor - cops killed him (//https)
He did it all in less than a minute and cops got to him in less than a minute - wearing body armor and had extra magazines
The Oregon District was filled with "thousands" of people out on a weekend night at the time, according to Mayor Whaley. Officers were also stationed in the neighborhood and were able to halt the rampage less than a minute after it began.
Dayton Mayor: "If Dayton police had not gotten to the shooter in under a minute -- and figure that 26 injured, 9 dead -- hundreds of people in the Oregon District could be dead today," Whaley told reporters.

Let's put these 2 events in perspective ... they seem dramatic at the time, but in overall terms the numbers are paltry compared to everyday inner core city action
I'm just watching on the news that "55 Shootings in Chicago this weekend - 7 fatal so far" - main tauma center overrun - so far this year 1600 shot, 300 killed
Baltimore on pace to again beat 300 + murders
That's just 2 inner cities .. all like every other big city run by the same political group .. yet the folks keep voting for them to continue it

No. We need to rethink our border problem, because a vast majority of our gun crimes are committed with guns that are not even legal here.

As I have stated before in your other thread: Criminals don't care about gun laws, and will likely get an illegal gun elsewhere.
What do you want the Canadian government to do? ban a banned firearm even more because somebody is ignoring the current ones?

Grandmother thwarts mass shooting by bringing grandson to hospital: authorities (//https)
In Texas, where a mass shooting this weekend in El Paso left 22 dead, another potential one was thwarted last month when a woman convinced her grandson to visit a hospital for treatment instead of opening fire at a hotel as he'd planned.
William Patrick Williams, 19, of Lubbock, was arrested by federal authorities on Thursday after a short hospitalization.
"This was a tragedy averted," Nealy Cox, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, said in a statement. "I want to praise the defendant's grandmother, who saved lives by interrupting this plot."
Williams told his grandmother he purchased an AK-47 rifle and planned to "shoot up" a local hotel and commit suicide by cop, federal prosecutors said last week. The woman convinced him to let her bring him to a hospital instead.
She gave authorities consent to search a room Williams rented at the hotel. Officers found the rifle, 17 magazines loaded with ammunition, several knives, a black trench coat, tactical pants, a T-shirt that read "Let 'Em Come" and black gloves with the fingers cut off.

This is a scourge on the consciousness of all Americans if nothing is done to amend regulations soon. It is a very complicated and intricate matter. I just don't see why good and responsible gun owners must be punished for the actions of some. Nevertheless, a good and responsible gun owner could make mistakes too and leave his/her gun locker unlocked and a young child or troubled person gets a hold of the weapon. Very intricate matter. Not certain where to begin to fix it.

Actually, all guns were legally owned - laying around unsecured etc was the problem
Guns were found throughout the house, none of them secured, she said.
"What we should be seeing with something like a rifle is that it was disabled or locked in one way."
The man was later released and is scheduled to appear in Yarmouth provincial court in October.
He meant to dial 411, screwed up - cops have to come to (and into) home if 911 is dialed (in error or otherwise)

I know what will fix it, Fash. It will come from decades of evolution.
As proven, we continue to evolve. If you had said to me in the 1970s that one day my brother will never eat meat again, I would have laughed at you. He is now a vegan and will not touch anything that came from meat, even eggs or dairy. He now considers animals as our fellow beings and he does not want to see them suffer. They have feelings too, he insists.
Some gun owners are not to be separated from their guns. While reading a magazine on the great outdoors this weekend, I came across an article about hunting. Some families have hunting in their blood, for generations. I came upon a photo of a lad who is about 9. He was posing with a wide smile next to his kill, a deer. You can tell how very proud he was. He is only one of millions around the world who hunt for sports. I do not see them surrendering their weapons. It is a way of life for them.
