There's a reason that we don't look to teenagers for guidance on fraught issues of public policy. Kids have nothing interesting to say to us. They just repeat back what they've been told by adults, with less nuance and maturity.

Much of the climate advocacy of young people boils down to the plaint that all parents know well: "I want it, and I want it now." As one headline on a National Geographic story put it, "Kids' world climate strikes demand that warming stop, fast."

The youthful climate activists claim they've been sold out by their elders. Greta Thunberg put it with her usual accusatory starkness at the U.N.: "You are failing us, but young people are starting to understand your betrayal."

This is laughable. By no global measure of social and economic well-being have we failed kids. According to HumanProgress.org, the global poverty rate fell from 28 percent in 1999 to 11 percent in 2013. Life expectancy increased from 63.2 years to 71.9 years from 1981 to 2015. The completion rate for primary school increased from 80 percent in 1981 to 90 percent in 2015. The same benign trends hold for hunger, child labor, literacy, and so on.

If climate change proves a significant challenge, today's youth will have more resources and technology to grapple with it than any other generation in the history of mankind.

Of course, the adults they listen to don't tell them any of this. Instead, they feed the kids a diet of apocalyptic warnings that children repeat back as if they were urgent insights. One speaker at the youth climate rally in Washington, D.C., last week said that we have just 18 months — yes, only until the beginning of 2021 — to forestall irreversible environmental harms.

According to National Geographic, "more than a few teens who began as fervent activists have dropped out, citing depression, anxiety, and other fears that the world's leaders will not act in time to prevent their lives — and the lives of their children — from being irretrievably altered by climate change."

This is nuts, and it's the adult enablers who are ultimately responsible. As for the kids, they'll be all right. One day, they will grow up, even in a warming world.

Forty-eight percent think the climate is changing, and humans are only partly responsible. Eight percent say the climate is changing and it's not people doing it. Parents need to keep a close eye on what the climate strike tells their kids

There's a famous flashback scene in the old Woody Allen movie Annie Hall where the main character's mother takes her son to the doctor. She tells the doctor her son is depressed and won't do anything. The doctor asks why and the sullen boy explains that he read that the universe is continually expanding: "Someday it will break apart, and that will be the end of everything."

I used to find that scene funny. Now I'm not so sure anymore because it hits too close to home.

On Friday, many thousands of Canadian schoolchildren will be exposed to similar rhetoric that may frighten them and cause them undue stress as they attend the various Global Climate Strike rallies taking part across the country.

University classes are being cancelled and school boards are sending permission slips home asking parents to allow their kids to attend one of these rallies.

Parents need to pay close attention to what will be happening in schools on Friday. While most parents are likely comfortable with their children being taught the basics of environmentalism — don't litter, don't pollute — these rallies go way beyond that. Climate activism heavily overlaps with political and ideological rhetoric and this Friday's planned events will be no exception.

"Our planet is on fire. We have to act now," reads a message on popular Instagram account Youth strike 4 climate, a group that's promoting the rallies. These sorts of doomsday messages will be out in full force and have already been proven to scare and damage impressionable young minds.

Climate anxiety. Eco grief. Solastalgia. Look them up. These terms are now frequently used by mental health experts to discuss the rising concerns that have come out of all of this alarmist rhetoric.

The American Psychological Association has even released a 70-page guidebook to help professionals navigate mental health issues related to fretting over climate change.

This can rise to extreme cases. While many people have celebrated the passion behind teenager Greta Thunberg's activism, it has not come without its personal costs. Whatever your thoughts on climate change, do you want anything resembling this happening to your child? Do you want your child placed in therapy because of what they've heard at a school field trip? It should be possible to discuss environmental and climate issues without traumatizing children.

On Wednesday a man from Manchester, England, posted on social media that a~~[size=150]~~ 14-year old boy from the school his wife works at committed suicide in part because of climate change anxiety.[/size] There are no news reports on this and there very well may be another side to the story, but just the possibility of this being true should cause a chill to run through the spine of every parent. Is this a world we want to live in?

There is also an undeniable political element to the climate strike. U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Canadian celebrity activist Naomi Klein have made it clear they want to use the climate change issue to herald a socialist revolution. And they aren't the fringe voices at these gatherings. They're the ringleaders.

Climate Justice Toronto posted on social media about all of the signs they're building to wave during the supposedly child-friendly rally. One of them, in all capitals, reads F--- CAPITALISM.

Parents, please be wary about what your kids are seeing and hearing. If they're exposed to this strike, talk to them before and after to monitor what they've been told. Ideally, keep them away from it entirely.

Woody Allen's famous neurotic antics is funny to see on film. But it's not something you want to see in your kids.

If you expect others to take your GRAPH as "proof" of something, you'd do well to enlarge it so they can see what the SOURCE is, and maybe even say something about that source to help them understand why you find it credible. I think you already know this, because in academia (even in economics departments) it's a common practice.

While you're at it, you might need to amplify your SUPPOSITION as to why she preached inaccurate data to the UN, since you do not know the identities of the people you blame.

If they stop fossil fuel emissions tomorrow it will make no difference what so ever.

Humans have reduced virgin forest by 85%. God did not put trees and active volcanoes on this earth for nothing.

It is now too late to change anything. If they replant a few billion trees to soak up the carbon, they MIGHT have a chance to slow our problems down...

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing on this planet is a HEALTHY OCEANS with HEALTHY LITTLE FISH cuz healthy little fish feeds the entire planet and on LAND, OLD GROWTH TREES and birds.

Life will be completely unlivable without those things.

If they really believe the problem is too much C02 in the atmosphere, this is something that is easily solved without changing our entire way of life. He sounds like a dork however, when David Suzuki was visiting Australia one time, he was getting an education. He wasn't up to date on all the methods out there controlling the climate problem so I assume your leaders are just as ignorant.

We need ALL our oil, gas, solar, wind and (maybe) nuclear but NZ and Australia do not want that,... I'm sure it'll come eventually. There isn't one solution but a collection of fixers. Tree planting is a huge one.

Thank you for taking the time to bring actual data to us. I have no problem with suggestions that the Swedish girl is misinformed and/or uninformed, and like you I tend to think there is no real "left" or "right" to the climate question, and I also think the available "science" often needs vetting for bias or methodology (I hope to return to this problem in another thread, yet to come.)

I entered the thread because I don't like media hatchet jobs on people who are perhaps only the canary in the coal mine, and I said my piece about that. This particular "canary" seems to have triggered a lot of people on all sides of the climate argument, and I think that's mostly because of media spin in both directions.

The first thing that needs doing IMMEDIATELY is replace plastic with glass again.

The younger generation and all generations actually, should cease using single use plastic items this second... no ifs or buts about it.

Within 3 yrs, this 15 yrs old Greta will be classed as an adult and these kids now will be responsible for cleaning up the mess we make daily now, while we are all taking a dirt nap in the future. Very very little of the plastic bottle of snake oil improves anything except lining an anonymous millionaires pocket while he takes trips to the Caribbean with his sugar baby..

Everyone would benefit looking at their own habits they call "a carbon footprint" and see where they can make room for improvement. ...

I think that asking questions and seeking clarification is a better means of civil discourse than calling other members names or claiming to be able to read their minds.

That is not something I would do myself. I don't condone nor support it as a political tactic, but the line of "exploitation" is hard to draw. David Hogg, for example, has received lots of support after the Parkland shootings, but no one with deep pockets went out and recruited or kidnapped him. Rather, he arose from the graves of his friends with a bit of an attitude and set off by himself to do something. If he subsequently accepted financial aid in his quest, that is hardly "exploitation."

As to the Greta person, part of what I'm about in this thread is seeking to explore whether and to what degree she is being exploited, and if so, by whom.

Is it cold and cynical to ask who is funding Greta Thunberg's world eco-adventure?

Of course it isn't. If someone was out filling meeting rooms and public parks with thousands of people while extolling the virtues of fossil fuel that question would be asked immediately, and for good reason.

As they say, follow the money.

She is a 16-year-old girl. I am a grown man with a job and I can't afford to pull up stakes and go traipsing around North America on a speaking tour unless someone foots the bill.

Ms. Thunberg has appeared at the UN in New York, in Montreal, just recently in Alberta, and has plans to appear in Chile, all in support of her particularly apocalyptic message of global doom.

She has won several honours and scholarships, but it seems that when there was a cash award she donated it to charity. For example she received the German Goldene Kamera Special Climate Protection award and Thunberg said she would donate the 25,000 euro prize money to organizations she feels are doing good work in the area of climate change.

On Facebook, Thunberg addressed the rumours she knows abound about her.

"Many people love to spread rumors saying that I have people 'behind me' or that I'm being 'paid' or 'used' to do what I'm doing. But there is no one 'behind' me except for myself. My parents were as far from climate activists as possible before I made them aware of the situation."

Are her parents funding the effort? She claims that at first they were against her activism but, "my parents pay for tickets and accommodations."

She and her family have a book on the market but she claims all profits from that effort also go to charity.

She is quite a fundraiser, it seems, but yet takes no money herself while travelling the world.

She claims independence.

"I am not part of any organization. I sometimes support and cooperate with several NGOS that work with the climate and environment. But I am absolutely independent and I only represent myself. And I do what I do completely for free, I have not received any money or any promise of future payments in any form at all. And nor has anyone linked to me or my family done so."

Indeed here have been false stories about her and her financial situation. A hoax magazine cover claimed she was the "highest paid activist." A number of sources have discredited a false image of Thunberg with the American financier George Soros. (That was a particularly clever hoax as he would be a likely suspect.)

Some people feel she is being used as a puppet for shadowy adults. I don't know. She may be the Doogie Howser of the global crisis set, wise and independent beyond her years. She seems quite intelligent.

Or maybe she is actually the Mother Teresa of the movement, doing the right thing, always and with no compromise, and asking no reward.

But no one gets from New York to Montreal to Edmonton and on to Chile for free. Is it just her parents?

As parents, we want our children to have a purpose, to be driven, to have an ambition. I am sure Greta's parents are very proud of her because their daughter has chosen a mission that sees her as someone who is changing the world. Bravo indeed.

However, she is only 16. The world has heard her message. Now she must go back to school and grow up in the most normal way possible. She should resist how adults are using her form this point forward. She has already done a good job of making the world aware of a very important cause. It is time for her to live a 16-year old's life in a healthy way.

I cant help but observe thru the news media as well as activities in my local community, that our youth dont seem to grasp the danger of failing to practice social distancing and minimized interactions, especially in groups.

Not to mention we can't mine enough rare earth metals. Not to mention that it would mean more reliance on coal, because diffuse sources of energy like wind and solar don't have the juice to power the earth even if we had the rare earth metals to run on them.

I'm glad that's the case, I think it'd be really unpractical to rebuild the system and infrastructure just to support EVs, and all for practically nothing too.

Another problem with EV batteries is they're hard to recycle with only a 40% chance of success. To sum it up, manufacturing EVs is extremely energy demanding, EVs don't work well in cold climate countries, can't travel on trips or at least long distance, more expensive electricity bills, a lot more black outs, more pollution caused by powerplants especially around the world, and more taxing from rebates and more poverty for everyone.

One crisp winter morning in Sweden, a cute little girl named Greta woke up to a perfect world, one where there were no petroleum products ruining the earth. She tossed aside her cotton sheet and wool blanket and stepped out onto a dirt floor covered with willow bark that had been pulverized with rocks. "What's this?" she asked.

"Pulverized willow bark," replied her fairy godmother.

"What happened to the carpet?" she asked.

"The carpet was nylon, which is made from butadiene and hydrogen cyanide, both made from petroleum," came the response.

Greta smiled, acknowledging that adjustments are necessary to save the planet, and moved to the sink to brush her teeth where instead of a toothbrush, she found a willow, mangled on one end to expose wood fibre bristles.

"Your old toothbrush?" noted her godmother, "Also nylon."

"Where's the water?" asked Greta.

"Down the road in the canal," replied her godmother, 'Just make sure you avoid water with cholera in it"

"Why's there no running water?" Greta asked, becoming a little peevish.

"Well," said her godmother, who happened to teach engineering at MIT, "Where do we begin?" There followed a long monologue about how sink valves need elastomer seats and how copper pipes contain copper, which has to be mined and how it's impossible to make all-electric earth-moving equipment with no gear lubrication or tires and how ore has to be smelted to a make metal, and that's tough to do with only electricity as a source of heat, and even if you use only electricity, the wires need insulation, which is petroleum-based, and though most of Sweden's energy is produced in an environmentally friendly way because of hydro and nuclear, if you do a mass and energy balance around the whole system, you still need lots of petroleum products like lubricants and nylon and rubber for tires and asphalt for filling potholes and wax and iPhone plastic and elastic to hold your underwear up while operating a copper smelting furnace and . . .

"What's for breakfast?" interjected Greta, whose head was hurting.

"Fresh, range-fed chicken eggs," replied her godmother. "Raw."

"How so, raw?" inquired Greta.

"Well, . . ." And once again, Greta was told about the need for petroleum products like transformer oil and scores of petroleum products essential for producing metals for frying pans and in the end was educated about how you can't have a petroleum-free world and then cook eggs. Unless you rip your front fence up and start a fire and carefully cook your egg in an orange peel like you do in Boy Scouts. Not that you can find oranges in Sweden anymore.

"But I want poached eggs like my Aunt Tilda makes," lamented Greta.

"Tilda died this morning," the godmother explained. "Bacterial pneumonia."

"What?!" interjected Greta. "No one dies of bacterial pneumonia! We have penicillin."

"Not anymore," explained godmother "The production of penicillin requires chemical extraction using isobutyl acetate, which, if you know your organic chemistry, is petroleum-based. Lots of people are dying, which is problematic because there's not any easy way of disposing of the bodies since backhoes need hydraulic oil and crematoriums can't really burn many bodies using as fuel Swedish fences and furniture, which are rapidly disappearing - being used on the black market for roasting eggs and staying warm."

This represents only a fraction of Greta's day, a day without microphones to exclaim into and a day without much food, and a day without carbon-fibre boats to sail in, but a day that will save the planet.

Tune in tomorrow when Greta needs a root canal and learns how Novocain is synthesized.
