B.C. health officials have clearly stated that they want British Columbians to stay home during the Easter long weekend to combat the novel coronavirus crisis, but there are concerns that some people aren't getting the message.
"Don't travel this weekend," Health minister Adrian Dix said.
"If you are going to Sechelt or going to Gibsons every Easter for 15 years, take this year off. If you're going to go to your second home, don't go this weekend.
"This is the weekend to stay close to home."
Despite the warning, ferries and roadways appeared busier than normal on Thursday with boats, trailers and motor homes on the move ahead of the long weekend.
There was no shortage of vehicles at Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwassen Ferry terminals.
BC Ferries has significantly reduced the number of sailings on all routes amid the COVID-19 crisis. It is also legally required to reduce by 50 per cent the maximum number of passengers that may be carried onboard to support the two-metre physical distancing rule.
What sailings there were, did appear to be busy Thursday.
The 9 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay was 95 per cent full and the 7:30 p.m. sailing to the Southern Gulf Islands was 99 per cent full. Those numbers refer to the number of vehicles boarding the vehicle and not the number of passengers.
Coastal and island communities have called on tourists and vacation property owners to stay home.
"I understand 25 cars came off this afternoon — two were locals, 23 were not local," Galiano Island resident Jane Wolverton said Thursday.
"When you have such a small population everybody knows everybody."
B.C.'s top doctor says this Easter weekend is far from a traditional holiday weekend.
"This is a really important time for us and everybody this weekend we need to stay close to home," provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said. "We need to be kind and unwind in our own home with our family."
Staying at home also means staying out of the backcountry, but with sun in the forecast for B.C.'s south coast search-and-rescue groups are worried about a spike in calls.
"People are still heading out into the wilderness and every time someone gets into trouble it puts a group of individuals at risk," BC Search and Rescue Association senior director Dwight Yochim said.

I expect the quite the number of confirmed cases in the next three to four weeks from this Easter long weekend.

I'm not. Any uptick of cases arising from the odd search and rescue is likely to be dwarfed by the activities of certain fast food drivethroughs.

Only in the right hands. Some owners have no idea what to do with theirs. I will never forget relaxing in a quiet park in the shade watching some soccer-mom type pondering a traffic island from the driver seat of her Mitsubishi Pajero... for three whole fucking minutes before gingerly navigating its gentle curve at the mind-buggering speed of two or three miles per hour. Un-bloody-real.
Someone told me afterwards that the word "pajero" means "wanker" in spanish. I never bothered to check, but that particular driver was certainly one.

Mine does... ac_dunno
A five seater with undercover storage out the back... long range fuel and water tanks...gear to camp for extended periods of time...
...I place a higher value on having that over a house. Houses burn down, communities turn bad, work can and does dry up regionally... the idea that we could throw a few bags in the back from the house and just drive away for better pastures...well, that makes more sense to us...

"Shoot them dead": Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte orders police and military to kill citizens who defy coronavirus lockdown
In the Philippines, the 57 million residents of the country's main island, Luzon, are under strict lockdown orders to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Despite that, many in a Manila slum took to the streets Wednesday to protest a lack of supplies, arguing they had not received any food packs since the lockdown started two weeks ago.
The local government refutes those claims and clashed with protestors, ultimately arresting 20 people who refused to return home.
Later that night, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took to the airwaves with a chilling warning for his citizens: Defy the lockdown orders again and the police will shoot you dead.

I seem to recall similar sentiments being expressed over in Italy when a bunch of mayors threatened to turn the flamethrowers on the citizenry. Meanwhile you have roving gangs of police being turned into squadding pawns in England and kicking in doors for no reason other than some miscreant called a local hotline on someone they didn't like... kinda takes the whole ordering of 30 pizzas to Caskur's house to a whole new level.

I remember a mayor of a Northern Italian city encouraged Italians to hug a Chinese person when the coronavirus started to hit the region hard..
Not only is that patronizing to East Asians, it could've quickly spread the virus.
I'm wondering what will come of May long weekend? I'm also wondering of the long term effects will be for those who recovered from the virus?
I have no problem staying home, probably cause I live on a busy street and I can see out my window everyone hustling and bustling to get their shit done, people going for walks, seniors taking it easy with their walkers, cyclist, teens on skateboards, etc...there's a lot of movement out there....I make myself a cup of tea and sit in the window, watching...I feel like a cat lol

Our provincial government is discouraging any camping this summer..
Most wildfires are started by campers and the province doesn't want to be fighting the pandemic and wildfires simultaneously.

As far as finding other work, my Ex is a healthcare worker, and must maintain, in good standing, her registry number while working for any publicly funded facility (which is almost all of them). If she ever got stripped of her reggie, her only hope would be to find work in some undesirable segment of the industry (which do exist).
Dove is as dumb as they come, and I called her out on this forum years ago for her stupidity.
She, above all, should know about patient/resident/client confidentiality and privacy when working in such a setting, as those rules should have been explained to her.
What Martini did was not right (snitching), the Bible Thumping baby-machine junky should've also remembered her basic training that would have been taught to her in school.

Front line workers are actually asking people to stop making noise, since many of them work shifts all around the clock, and may be in fact sleeping at 19:00.
The best thing to do, to honour these frontline workers if you want to, is to make sure they are treated fairly while they continue working.
Trucking is one example... They break EVERY labour law in the book, right until the very second I post this. NO overtime pay, even though it is MANDATED. NO Holiday Pay, even though it is MANDATED, and a TON of other labour laws that aren't adhered to by the company, with a "Quit if you don't like it" mentality.
The guys that deliver your toilet paper, and everything else you consume would probably be happy if our Government didn't allow them to be paid and treated worse than a new employee emptying trash part-time at McDonald's...

You know the bridge by the Shell gas station in Crescent Valley...I googled and apparently it's an Esso now....anyhow that bridge did not go thru straight at one point...you had to slow down quite a bit cause it was a sharp s curve. There's also Crescent Beach right there, pretty popular in the summer.
There use to be a local and organic market across the street...I stopped there quite a bit...I don't think its there anymore? And there's also "heartbreak hotel", the apartments next door. If you keep driving you get to the junction, there should be a bank there...at one point there was a subway and make your own booze joint. Take a left at the lights and drive for maybe 3 min, you get to the Dam Inn...have a beer and some bar food....if you keep going...you will hit Nelson. I use to work there.

That is what everybody who has been there tells me.
Did many golf course projects throughout the interior - the 2 of us spent many summers in (initially his) 30 ft motor home parked in the trees .. often parked alongside a river etc ... romantic bbq dinner under the trees with deer dropping in for a visit
Castlegar .. Fairmont Springs (2 summers) parked close alongside the very source of the mighty Columbia River for the season ... get woke up by beavers diving in etc etc .... fond memories ... great courtship, :sneaky2:

I can see why Fash and her husband like taking their motor home there every summer. Maybe not the summer of 2020 though.

It's very unlikely we'll go to the Kootenays this year..
Our province doesn't want people camping this summer..
They don't want to fight forest fires and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not far from you. You are close to the co-op. And the gas station/ mechanic at the time, would rent tubes in the summer. But we had our own.
Did you live there Berry or just spend parts of your summers there?
I lived there for 7 years.
I did not grow up there, I was raised in cities. I chose to go out there and live that life. Then I came back to the city.
I was thinking about taking a transfer out to Calgary many years ago. I went out there to check it out. I made it to the BC border, but I never went to SE BC. Now I wish I stayed another four or five days and went there.
It is what it is. As long as you are happy, is all that matters :)

It is gorgeous, I tried to go back a few years ago but...long story.. besides my parents are here and I do want to be near them.
The coast is a fuckin gong show...yes, it used to be nice when I was a teenager...now its all clear cut and fuckin condos everywhere...the city of Vancouver itself is a joke...one month of lockdown in Vancouver and the mayor is already saying they are going bankrupt.. maybe now is a good time to put more fuckin bike lanes in...you know the ones that hardly anyone uses?

It's nice to see once..
But, I'm sure there are lots of nice places in his province of Ontario to see.
Vancouver is a rain forest....all it does is fuckin rain here...even in the summer....and they want to promote bike lanes :2r4ml1j_th:

I've never been to Ontario, and I'd like to go...I'd actually like to go to Quebec, lots o see there...I hear the people are ignorant if you don't speak French...but I'd only go because I have family there and they would do all the talking for me lol

I swear these people are daft. I mean c'mon....a lot of people who work in the dt core work in offices, they dress up for work...do they really expect them to bike to work!? Some of them come from the burbs....imagine ladies in skirts cycling to work, big streams of mascara running down their faces and big skid mark up their back from all the water...and in Winnipeg, their tires would freeze to the ground. But oh yeah...put those fuckin bike lanes in :001_rolleyes:

That is Winnipeg's stupid commuting solutions.
I believe it IHJ, and they are probably ignorant enough to hand out fines at times like that cause cyclist are not "in the bike lanes"....that are obviously covered in snow. So winning...

I have seen people riding bicycles on snowy streets in Calgary and I wonder how they can stay on two wheels..
And they must be very cold.

If you drive north it's fun, beautiful....you will eventually see the big nipple, stop in winlaw.. for some food and doobie.
You seem to know the area well enough...
The organic market is still there. There's a cafe/restaurant and a Canada Post office in there also. The apartments are still there, looking like they probably have for the last 50 years. It's a very weird place to build a building like that, considering the everywhere around it is large properties.
The bank at junction is there. Subway is gone. Brew your own is gone also, I think.
The Dam is still there. You used to work there? Went in for a burger a couple months back or so. Was acceptable pub fare.
Now they only do take-out or delivery, and only between 16:00 and 20:00, 'cause virus...

You should have traveled further. Alberta is lucky we let them keep Banff...
