Lets get real. We are in a mess. It's likely too late here for what we call Western Society (North America and Europe mainly). We do not have the tools to even start
1. If Western Society hunkers, which despite arguments to the contrary we have no other choice because we do not have the tools, the discipline nor the infrastructures to handle other methods
2. If we decide to not hunker, we quickly overcome our health, enforcement and other vital infrastructures, and collapse from within into chaos.
3. Either way, we become poor countries with all the problems that entails ... weakened daily as China gets strong again daily
4. Understand one basic thing!!! China long ago set out to be not "a" superpower .. It set out to be "the" superpower
5. Then it kept quiet (and maybe more sinister), closed the virus off with its draconian measures, stopped everyone from escaping the province to protect itself ... claimed it was not transferable person to person while sending 100s of 1000s of people from that province (many infected) by planes into Europe and N America ... and here we sit today.
6. At the same time they gobbled and are holding us ransom for all the medical and other vital things we would need .. even sending us medical items, many of which that are defective
7. Because of our years of unbelievable stupidity, they can now also further hold us ransom for medical chemicals. Look for it as our next obstacle .
China achieved its goal without firing a shot
Starting last summer, I have expected "something" would "happen" and soon because China's previously extremely successful 30 year plan was almost in ruins as the bigger superpower was doing a hard 180 on it .. and was in process of setting it back probably permanently.
They "had" to do something to save their longtime objective ... their very reason to be.
It's been very very very hard to just sit and watch them successfully move toward their 30 year goal in slow motion .. and worse, with the help of a compliant and helpful Western World
So, for a faltering China, it was now or never!!
So, they did it "now" before they were set back too far .. and short of some unlikely miracle .. they appear to have succeeded.
Whether they planned it from scratch or simply took advantage of something that "just happened" at the right time for them .. I don't know for sure.
I do know that they unleashed it while deliberately withholding the vital secret that it was transmissible, and even using the WHO to tell us that .. unleashed it with no warning upon the unsuspecting world using passenger plane loads containing very many carriers from the very province where it was prevalent.
Either way they knew EXACTLY what they were doing and achieved EXACTLY what they desperately needed at this very point in time
......................................................................................
The following would be the only hope ... but even if we now decided to try it, it's too late to build the resources .. We do not have the inclination, nor the multiple infrastructures to combat it as a very few others did .. nor do we have anywhere near the medical facilities to contain it if we tried to

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/11/south-korea-beating-coronavirus-citizens-state-testing
South Korea is one of the few countries that has succeeded in flattening the coronavirus curve. Its policy of testing, tracing and treating without lockdowns has been widely lauded. Some attribute this to South Korea's experience of having dealt with previous epidemics such as Sars and Mers. Commentators in the US tend to stress the country's effective leadership, contrasting it with that of Donald Trump's. Others point to cultural factors, such as the willingness of the public to sacrifice privacy for the greater good.
What is often overlooked, though, is that at the roots of South Korea's success against Covid-19 are a well-funded and efficient system of delivering public services. Without this baseline infrastructure, the policy of test, trace and treat could not have been sustained or expanded to the degree that it has. Likewise, effective leadership cannot achieve much if it lacks a well-oiled public service system that can deliver.
How did South Korea achieve this? Unlike in western Europe after the second world war, establishing a welfare system was not the priority of the dictatorships that ruled the country. Like many developing nations in Asia, the emphasis was on industrialisation and economic growth. At the same time, the dictatorship invested heavily in public infrastructure, viewing it as indispensable to Korea's growing industries. In 1977, the country's first national health insurance system was introduced, although this was nothing like the comprehensive healthcare of today.
Korean politics since the 1990s can thus be characterised as a period during which citizens became increasingly emboldened in their relationship with the state, forcing governments to take their wellbeing seriously. One area that this has been the most conspicuous is in public transportation, energy and healthcare. For the average person, these are everyday services that all citizens have the right to enjoy, and which are paid for by taxpayers' money. To put it in more utilitarian terms, they are the most tangible barometers with which to judge the government's commitment to its citizens. Failure to improve their qualities and manage them properly almost always leads to a loss of votes for the ruling party in upcoming elections.
The irony is that for many years, Koreans believed that having world-class public services was equivalent to becoming more democratic and thus more western. Many were unaware of the widespread privatisation and outsourcing of public services that was taking place in the west at the same time. The coronavirus crisis plunging Europe into chaos has shattered this idealised image. As far as Koreans are concerned, this has been a vindication of a supposed "Korean model" which they have fought for over many years. It is unlikely that it will go away anytime soon.

Death from starvation will be in the tens of millions in the next year..
And then the deaths at home from cancelled surgeries, suicides, obesity related diseases, family violence and societal collapse..
We're in a terrible situation from which we as a nation and a civilization may never recover.
I am willing to wear a mask in public, stay 2 meters away from people and carry sanitizer with me at all times if it meant I could return to work.

We're in a terrible situation from which we as a nation and a civilization may never recover.
We are. I cannot and and will not argue any ideas or constructive methods. I just don't see any that will work.
Worse, hunkering is doing no good. All it's doing is killing our economy and at best delaying the inevitable.
Even with it, everywhere numbers are still rising today
I concede there is no other option but to un-hunker and get back to work .. but then the numbers rise faster (and judging by the still rising numbers rising even while hunkered), they will rise fast .. and as are now weakened by a poorer economy (even less tools to fight back with).. we will soon overwhelm our infrastructures (hospitals, cops, govt etc) .. and we will have to hunker again which will destroy our countries.
Whatever we choose to do, China has put us in a no-win situation as I see it
I'm unable to see a win no matter what we do, hunker or go for it. And now we are weaker than we were before thanks to the shutdown.
Assuming we will have go back to work because we have to ... I guess we could win if we had all of the following 4 going for us
IF 1. there is permanent immunity (in doubt) ..
and IF 2. there is a vaccine in amazing time (we are told unlikely) ..
and IF 3. it doesn't mutate (seems a likelihood) ..
and IF 4. China doesn't do it again with a new one should we start to recover (and if we do so, it WILL release another if we start to recover, as it is playing for a total win).
It is not aiming for a tie). It has put us way down deliberately .. and It will use every tool in its arsenal to keep us down
We need ALL those 4 elements to be in our favor .. and none are
China is holding all the cards .. over the past 30 years we made them strong and we gave them the entire deck .. Worse, 1/2 the population is STILL soft on China and is willing to allow it to get its way. In fact, truths are being stifled (for example press and e-sites denounce and remove even mild words against China .. new outlets sitting on the story of the century and saying nothing) tying our hands behind our backs .. and outright aiding and abetting the enemy that is destroying us all.
What do we do if China holds back medications? .. That's their trump card .. virtually absolute control over what we handed them on a platter .. control they will use if we try to fight back or are somehow able to start to recover
Over the past 3 decades, many tried to warn our politicians that they and thus all of us were on a path to suicide. Their words were muffled and even totally snuffed out as no one in press or in power wanted to hear them.
I'm really sorry to speak like this. I apologize for doing so. I'm by nature an optimist and have fought through and won (or at worse tied) many horrible unwinnable battles in my own life .. but .. I don't see a win here .. except for China

Yes  ... they are that stupid as to likening those who detest them
On that I just stopped the TV so I can report these "changing" polls from the US
American's view on China
March - 26% favorable .. 66 unfavorable (Some awakening but I'm bettin the 26 were progs - and a month earlier than that, most all progs were China friendly)
Seems their old prog friends have deserted them this month
Today -" 90 % unfavorable and a THREAT"
WOW - The US gets it!! That's good news that such a big country "now" has it figured
We are on a collision course with China that will and should get ugly
I think the US will never return to their old opinions of China .. This act of war did it and feelings will get much stronger as each day (and daily climbing numbers will make all the West become angrier and more savvy of China's plans)
Those numbers represent suffering, death and hurting economies - China will get trouble from every direction from here on in .. and as days of agony go by, Europe will turn on it also .. That is starting already ..
by summer, China will be on its own as the Pariah .. the Dangerous Pariah that hurt us all
They would not surprise me if they send another present later .. look for at least threats as they become more and more isolated ... medicines?
Before it's over, your country Taiwan may get great support for China to stop making threats from China
The West must balance assertiveness with the fact that China controls their medicine and medical supplies..
Former CCP chairman Deng told hardliners it was unwise for a fledgling bird to soar..
We are now the fledgling bird....we can't be too demanding of China until we no longer need them for our essentials.
I'm aware and agree. They have vital items we need
Fortunately we do not have a war-maker as all previous recent US Presidents have been
I know what he is feeling as he has known what China was for decades and openly made stop China from raping us economically a priority .. AND he knows what it did to us recently
As to talking warlike, he's the coolest we have seen in our lifetime
The KMT in Taiwan has always advocated further almagamation of Taiwan's developed transparent economy with China..
They will be forced by Taiwanese voters to rethink that suicidal policy if they ever want to win the presidency again.
Not a popular idea, or wise, eh?
It just keeps getting worse with China Pariah
China Continues to Flood the World with Defective Medical Supplies (//https)
More than a dozen countries on four continents have recently disclosed problems with Chinese-made coronavirus tests and personal protective equipment. The problems range from test kits tainted with the coronavirus to medical garments contaminated with insects.
Chinese authorities have refused to take responsibility for the defective equipment and in many instances have cast blame on the countries that purchased the material. They have also called on nations of the world to stop "politicizing" the problem.
Slovakian Prime Minister Igor Matovič disclosed that more than a million coronavirus tests supplied by China for a cash payment of €15 million ($16 million) were inaccurate and unable to detect Covid-19. "We have a ton of tests and no use for them," he said. "They should just be thrown straight into the Danube."
U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler from Georgia accused China of holding up shipments of test kits: "Testing is core to opening our country back up. I'm concerned that China's holding up test kits. They're playing games with trade policy to prevent us, the United States, from getting the testing that we need."
"[W]e should not lose sight of the foundational strategic challenge confronting the West in the emerging post-globalization era: We are in a long twilight competition with the Chinese communist regime, a struggle we cannot escape, whether we like it or not." — Andrew Michta, George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies.

With world feeling turning so strongly against the Pariah, and likely permanently, their hand could get a lot stronger
I have always had a soft spot for Taiwan, but the more I learn from you about your country, the more I'm liking it
Despite 4 yrs in the general area and been to Hong Kong and to China ... we only spent about 3 hours in it between flights .. and that was in the secured area of the airport
I wish we had spent some time there
Mate's uncle's company did a lot of heavy construction in the capital .. he even was there for the quake
He was a huge contractor and was there many times .. and spoke well of it .. He liked being there

China says they will replace the one million faulty masks and swabs they sent us. But, how long will that take because we needed them yesterday. I find it hard to believe the Chinese manufacturer's quality control failed to find these defects.

2 good points
As to "hard to believe the Chinese manufacturer's quality control failed to find these defects" .. That's because it's not believable
In fact, it has happened in MANY cases to many Western countries .. an accident it is not
In fact it is consistent with how they deliberately released it upon the West .. while at the same time protecting China
My uncle used to manage a toy factory in Dongguan, Guangdong province, China..
Believe it or not, China does have quality assurance checks like we do here in Canada..
Those defective masks are not an accident.
Agreed on quality control, as many defects would hurt future sale of all goods.
I'll add, China's motives from the very start and following on are consistent and clear.

China lashes out at US, claims country is 'lying through their teeth' on coronavirus & threatens Australia
China's foreign ministry on Tuesday accused the United States of "lying through their teeth" and suggested the country mind its own business as the war of words between the world's two biggest economic powers escalated.
"We advise American politicians to reflect on their own problems and try their best to control the [coronavirus] epidemic as soon as possible instead of continuing to play tricks to deflect blame," spokesman Geng Shuang said.
The comments came on the heels of President Trump suggesting in a press conference on Monday that the U.S. would be seeking "substantial" compensation for China's handling of the global pandemic.
"We are not happy with China," Trump said. "We are not happy with that whole situation because we believe it could have been stopped at the source. It could have been stopped quickly and it wouldn't have spread all over the world."
He added that the United States is considering several options to "hold them accountable."
Australia Also:
"Maybe the ordinary people will say, 'Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?'" Ambassador Chen Jingye threatened, The Australian Financial Review reported.
Australian's foreign minister Marise Payne hit back, dismissing China's attempt at "economic coercion."
That didn't sit well with China, which prompted Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times, to tweet: "Let me give a 'coercion' to Australia. As its attitude toward China becomes worse and worse, Chinese companies will definitely reduce economic cooperation with Australia, and the number of Chinese students & visitors going to Australia will also decrease. Time will prove it all."

"The federal government has not complied with these requests."

On Friday, Reuters reported that China sought to block a European Union report alleging that Beijing was spreading disinformation about the coronavirus outbreak, according to four sources and diplomatic correspondence.

Australia Called 'Gum Stuck To China's Shoe' By Commie State Media In Coronavirus Investigation Stoush*
Australian foreign minister Marise Payne has put down 'any suggestion that economic coercion is an appropriate response' to Australia's call for an investigations into the origins of coronavirus, which China opposes.
Australia has been described as "gum stuck to the bottom of China's shoe," by a Chinese state media editor as Beijing criticised calls for an inquiry into the coronavirus origin as "political manoeuvring," further straining ties.
Australia has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Beijing as it calls for an investigation into the origins and spread of the virus, which emerged in China late last year and has now killed more than 200,000 people around the world.
Late on Monday, Hu Xijin, the editor of the state-run Global Times wrote on Weibo that ties between Australia and its largest trading partner, China, were likely to deteriorate as much as relations between Beijing and Washington had.
Criticising Australia for joining the US in its attacks on China, Hu wrote: "After the epidemic, we need to have more risk awareness when doing business with Australia and also when we send our children to study there."
"Australia is always there, making trouble. It is a bit like chewing gum stuck on the sole of China's shoes. Sometimes you have to find a stone to rub it off," Hu said.

China was evidently hiding the extent of a pandemic that endangered the world while covertly securing PPE at low prices. This "surreptitious" operation left "the world naked with no supply of PPE," Jorge Guajardo, Mexico's former ambassador to Beijing, told Global News.
The result: starting in March, after COVID-19 had circled the globe, countries that provided masks to China in January and February were forced to compete for China's supply.
By late January, sources in manufacturing and military circles were warning western governments that China seemed to be covertly seizing global PPE supply, O'Toole and Guajardo said.
But leaders in Canada didn't act, according to O'Toole.
"One source told me in January it became well-known amongst military and emergency services that China was stockpiling masks and basically buying out as many quantities as it could," he said in an interview with Global News. "And we know, ... that senior officials, in the end of January and the early days of February, are equally aware at Public Works Canada, with respect to a run on PPEs."
An investigation by Global News examines the troubling methods and underground actors used by Beijing to quietly corner the world's supply of PPE in a state-level operation.
China used diplomatic channels, state-owned businesses and Chinese diaspora community associations that are thought to be increasingly under the influence of Chinese President Xi Jinping's powerful United Front Work Department (UFWD).
WAIT - It Get's Worse
And through clandestine United Front networks run out of Chinese consulates in cities from Vancouver to Toronto to New York to Melbourne to Tokyo, the Communist Party urged millions of "overseas Chinese" to bulk-buy N95 masks in order to ship "back batches of scarce supplies for the motherland."
As troubling as China's methods were, the operation looks even worse under a magnifying glass because some organizations seemingly involved in the United Front's efforts in Canada include members that have previously been monitored or investigated by the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), according to RCMP and CSIS sources.
There is a 3 letter word for what China Deliberately Unleashed Upon the Western World, After Deliberately cleaning out our supplies - The word is "WAR"
China's PPE import operation was portrayed by its state media as a warlike effort. And it was a dramatic success.
According to a U.S. congressional report released in April, from Jan. 24 to Feb. 29, China ramped up its production of masks and slapped export restrictions on China-based foreign companies such as Canadian mask maker Medicom and U.S. mask maker 3M.
At the same time, China imported 2.02 billion safety masks, according to Beijing's March 2020 customs records.
"To ensure sufficient domestic supplies to counter COVID-19 (Beijing directed) regional offices in China and overseas to work with PRC industry associations to prioritize securing supplies from global sources," the report says.
The global callout for masks was posted to UFWD websites and sent to Chinese consulates where United Front officials are embedded.

The requests occurred around Jan. 14 and 15, when Chinese officials received confidential instructions from Xi, and all regions were warned to "prepare for and respond to a pandemic," according to leaked documents cited in an Associated Press investigation. Hospital staff were ordered to don protective gear.
Guajardo, Mexico's former ambassador to Beijing, told Global News that by Jan. 23, when China locked down Wuhan, he had recognized Beijing was involved in massive PPE imports.
Guajardo, who now works in a Washington, D.C., consultancy, said in mid-January, he was contacted by a source in Mexican supply chain logistics.
"They said, you know a funny thing, I'm being swamped by orders to send all the N95 I can find to China."
He said he completed some checks in the United States and judged PPE stock was vanishing from retail locations through "under the radar" methods.
"I thought, 'Oh my God, they are buying all the N95 supply in the world,'" Guajardo told Global News.
He was so convinced that he sent an ominous tweet on Jan. 27 forecasting an impending shortage of PPE in North America.
His Tweet Jan 27 - "As sure as day follows night, a shortage of something in China is soon reflected closer to home. No surgical masks in the Washington, DC area. My guess is people are buying them in bulk to send/sell in China."
In March, the masks sold to China in January and February were being sold back to Mexico at 20 to 30 times the price, according to Guajardo.
And the Washington Post and CNN reported in April that PPE is sometimes costing more than 1,000 percent the prices seen in early January.
"This pandemic got complicated because of China's coverup at the start," Guajardo said. "And now it is further complicated by China leaving the world naked with no supply of PPE.
"They started the pandemic and now they are profiting from it."
Guajardo added that in his experience with China, the masks being sold back now will not only come at exorbitant prices and with potential quality defects but with longer-term political demands.
The U.S. congressional report released in April similarly concludes: "The Chinese government may selectively release some medical supplies for overseas delivery, with designated countries selected, according to political calculations."

I can see why China doesn't want countries conducting inquiries.
China should be kicked out of the WHO, and the WTO.
I just heard China has just this week taken over a great deal more of ocean and islands to its south .. now claiming far more territory than before .. and sunk a fishing ship that infringed on it's new territory .. among several juicy new things
It is now on the move in many directions
The West for the past cpl of decades has worked it's butt of to kill itself .. plus, hand the world to China

US gets dragged into fight as Australia-China war of words escalates
AUSTRALIA JOINS US IN SEEKING PROBE OF CHINA AMID QUESTIONS OVER CORONAVIRUS ORIGIN (//https)
The animosity brewing between Australia and China over coronavirus reached a fever pitch this week.
But tensions between the trading partners have been simmering for more than a year over alleged plots to plant spies in the government as well as control over strategic islands in the South Pacific that could have consequences for the United States.
The latest spat started after Australia called for an independent inquiry into the origin of the novel coronavirus.
"I think it's incumbent upon China to answer those questions and provide the information so people can have clarity about exactly what happened because we don't want it to be repeated," Australia's home affairs minister Peter Dutton said on April 17.
China responded by threatening economic retaliation and accused Australia of doing America's dirty work.
"Obviously (Dutton) must have also received some instructions from Washington requiring him to cooperate with the U.S. in its propaganda war against China ... Some Australian politicians parroted what those U.S. forces have said and followed them to launch political attacks on China," a Chinese embassy official said. "Their move reveals the former's ignorance and bigotry as well as lack of independence, which is sad."
China has been working hard to shed its image that it silenced doctors and sat on vital virus data when COVID-19 was first detected in Wuhan, the capital city of central China's Hubei province in late 2019. Since then, more than 3.2 million people have been infected by the contagion and nearly 230,000 have died worldwide.

Majority Of Intelligence Community Agencies Believe Coronavirus Leaked Out Of Wuhan Lab, Senior Intel Official Says
he majority view among the U.S. intelligence community agencies is that COVID-19 is natural and accidentally leaked out of a laboratory in Wuhan, China, a senior intelligence official told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
While not all of the 17 agencies that make up the IC are fully behind the idea that the novel coronavirus was an accidental laboratory leak, most believe that to be the case, according to the senior official. The official added that the holdouts are still open to the possibility that the virus leaked from a laboratory.
The unanimous view of the IC is that the virus was not the result of an intentional act, the senior official noted.
That official's account confirms what Fox News White House reporter John Roberts reported Saturday, and matches with what President Donald Trump has said publicly.
Roberts cited a senior intelligence official in reporting that "there is agreement among most of the 17 Intelligence agencies that COVID-19 originated in the Wuhan lab. The source stressed that the release is believed to be a MISTAKE, and was not intentional."

'Smoking gun' intelligence report says China covered up coronavirus
Chinese researchers who tried to warn of the outbreak suddenly "disappeared," the intelligence dossier said.
By Aaron Sull, World Israel News
Whether or not the coronavirus came out of a lab, five intelligence agencies agree that China misled the world about its dangers.
A 15-page joint intelligence dossier prepared by Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., Canada, and the UK accuses China of deliberately covering up the coronavirus threat long before warning the world about it on January 20, reported the Australian Telegraph.
Citing the intelligence dossier, Chinese researchers who tried to warn of the outbreak suddenly "disappeared" and research evidence was destroyed, all while the Chinese government kept downplaying the coronavirus threat to the world.
According to the report, the first person to disappear was Huang Yan Ling, a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and thought to be "patient zero."
As part of a mass "suppression and destruction of evidence," live samples of the virus was destroyed, evidence of asymptomatic cases, known as "silent carriers" was "buried," and Wuhan 's wet markets were bleached down to remove any traces of evidence.
The Chinese government purged the internet of coronavirus research publications and censored related coronavirus web search terms such as "Wuhan Seafood market," "Wuhan Unknown Pneumonia" and "SARS variations" reported the dossier.
Furthermore, China publicly downplayed the coronavirus threat while simultaneously quarantining Wuhan's 11 million citizens.
The report was divided as to whether the deadly virus originated in a lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, an institute that researches dangerous novel pathogens that have no cure, such as coronavirus strains in bats.

The more we learn about the early stages of the novel coronavirus outbreak, the worse the Chinese Communist Party looks.
Far from being innocent victims of Mother Nature, the CCP was reportedly plotting to maximize its own advantages at the expense of everyone else on the planet. At least that's the upshot of the latest report from the Department of Homeland Security.
Were the Chinese lying about the virus initially, or at least hiding critical information about it from the rest of the world? Of course they were. But it wasn't just to avoid making themselves look bad, though that was a part of it. They were also using the delay to begin rapidly stockpiling vital medical supplies for their own use before there was a run on the market.
U.S. officials believe China covered up the extent of the coronavirus outbreak — and how contagious the disease is — to stock up on medical supplies needed to respond to it, intelligence documents show.
Chinese leaders "intentionally concealed the severity" of the pandemic from the world in early January, according to a four-page Department of Homeland Security intelligence report dated May 1 and obtained by The Associated Press.
The revelation comes as the Trump administration has intensified its criticism of China, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying Sunday that that country was responsible for the spread of disease and must be held accountable.

That is a given.
Serious questions are being raised about the conduct of China and the origins and actions which led to this global pandemic. And yet Canada remains silent.
The US, Australia, the European Union, and the United Kingdom have all spoken out. So why hasn't Justin Trudeau joined our trusted allies in calling for an international investigation into the conduct of the Chinese communist regime?
Don't Canadians who have suffered and succumbed to this terrible virus deserve answers? Justin Trudeau should be demanding that China respond and be accountable.
Let's ensure this type of crisis never happens to Canada and the world. We have every right to demand accountability from China, just as we did from the Iranian regime for killing Canadian citizens on board flight 752 to Ukraine.
Justin Trudeau has always been soft when it comes to China. He hasn't done nearly enough to get Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadians held hostage free from China. He hasn't stood up for our agricultural producers who are getting hammered in a trade war with China. He seems paralyzed in deciding to deny Huawei the contract to build our 5G network.
Why won't Justin Trudeau join our closest allies in standing up to the Chinese regime over their role in the spread of COVID-19? He may admire China's "basic dictatorship," but most of us do not.
The world needs to know what happened, and Canada must add our voice to the global community in the calling for a full review and investigation.

Dr. Yan Limeng, who fled Hong Kong to the United States in April, released a study on Sept. 14 claiming that the virus shows "biological characteristics that are inconsistent with a naturally occurring, zoonotic virus" and thus "should be a laboratory product." The study has not been peer-reviewed.
Twitter quickly banned Yan's account following her tweet announcing the study. The account, which Yan only opened on Sunday, had garnered over 59,000 followers in its short lifespan.
Yan said that the scientific community has "kept silence and worked together with the Chinese Communist Party" to censor studies that came to similar conclusions. "They don't want people to know the truth," she said in a Fox interview on Tuesday. "That's why I got suspended; I got suppression; I am the target that the Chinese Communist Party wants be [sic] disappeared."
Some scientists have called the report "unsubstantiated;" Beijing and a high-profile laboratory in Wuhan, the city where the pandemic first broke out, have denied such assertions, which emerged as early as January in media reports.
The U.S. administration, citing intelligence, has said that the virus is naturally-occurring but that "there is significant evidence" suggesting the virus first leaked out of a Wuhan lab. Officials have called out Beijing for denying international researchers access to crucial data about the virus's origins.
The Twitter ban, however, has drawn criticism from prominent China critics and the overseas Chinese dissident community, who said Twitter could be helping the Chinese regime censor topics not to its liking.
