So many base items, minerals, components are sourced from China, even if the end product is designed and built in the West.
Plastics pellets for instance...
There would be huge shortages of filaments for a wide array of industries, and that's just one substance.
Just because the West has the appetite and manpower to reenter in manufacturing, doesn't mean they have the machinery to begin with (old stuff shuffled off to Asia decades ago and modern units manufactured in China now), the process oils used in plastics manufacturing, and a lot of the experience flushed down under billions of cubic metres of water, conceivably.
I suspect the same goes for pharmaceuticals.... the West can't reproduce to scale anytime quick...
Shortage breeds economic instability.....

His son, mate's first cousin, lived there for a few years to manage construction
As it was built by China and they consulted / managed construction for the Chinese company, I don't think they gave a warranty

The severity of the rainstorms led China's Ministry of Water Resources to issue a stark warning late on Aug. 18 about the water level at the Three Gorges Reservoir, which is located on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
The water coming into the dam is expected to reach more than 74,000 cubic meters per second in the morning on Aug. 20, the highest level since the dam was commissioned in 2003, the ministry said, according to a report by Chinese state-run media Xinhua.
U.S.-based think tank the Heritage Foundation warned in early August that excessive flooding put dams located on the upstream of the Yangtze River under increasing stress.
Should the Three Gorges dam collapse, the think tank said the massive torrent of water would affect millions living downstream, inundating cities including Wuhan and wiping out extensive cropland, with China already threatened by a food shortage.
In Sichuan, local authorities raised the flood control response to the highest level (level one) of China's four-tier system on Aug. 18, one day after raising its level from three to two, according to Xinhua. Floodwaters forced local authorities to evacuate more than 100,000 people on Aug. 18, some of them residents of Ya'an, who had to escape after the city's water banks burst on Aug. 17.
China has been grappling with heavy rainstorms since June. Floods have affected at least 54.8 million people in 27 provinces and regions, according to the latest data from China's Ministry of Emergency Management. But some Chinese netizens question the authorities' data and believe the true number of casualties to be higher.

Beaches and pools in Southern Europe are crowded like that too. I was in a hot spring in British Columbia that was packed.
I avoid any wet environments shared with the unwashed masses...
I do the same if it's white people in the water. They all have COVID.ac_razz
I can always tell when Chinese Mainlander Tourists are about at the beach... sounds of a bubbling Jacuzzi and fish fleeing from bits of seaweed that aren't seaweed...

Months of sustained downpours have battered China with floods unseen in decades, displacing millions and testing the limits of the world's largest hydroelectric dam.
Such rainfall is far from over, according to Chinese officials who, in a rare admission, said grim challenges are ahead.
July and August usually bring some of the heaviest rains in China, which swell the flood-prone Yangtze River. Yet, Zhou Xuewen, the vice minister of water resources tasked with containing floods, said the rain season will continue through September, with a "very high likelihood" of severe floodings, according to a recent State Council Information Office press conference.
The flooding since June has affected at least 63.5 million people and caused close to 179 billion yuan ($25.9 billion) in direct economic losses, according to authorities. Stormwaters have overwhelmed more than 600 Chinese rivers and destroyed harvests in 1.14 million hectares (more than 2.8 million acres) of arable land in the lower reaches of the Yangtze.
Typhoons and more rains are expected to befall northern China in the coming weeks.
The Three Gorges Dam saw its water rise to 16.81 meters (55.15 feet) above warning level on Aug. 20, the highest peak since the dam was commissioned in 2003. It's predicted to climb by another 3.7 meters (12.1 feet) on Aug. 22. Eleven discharge gates were opened on Aug. 20 to ease pressure on the dam.
While Beijing has consistently asserted that the site, built along the upper reaches of Yangtze River, has shielded surrounding regions from flooding, experts have raised concerns that the structure has made matters worse.
"Whether the Three Gorges can play a role in preventing flooding in the current situation, or if the Chinese government has deceived the Chinese public from the beginning—this has been made pretty clear for people throughout the years," Wang Weiluo, a Chinese hydrologist based in Germany, told The Epoch Times in a recent interview.
The megacity Chongqing experienced its most widespread flooding in four decades on Aug. 18, forcing authorities to raise the flood alert to the maximum level. The city's officials shouted via loudspeakers for anyone on the streets to "take urgent safety measures" before the flood water rushed in.
