Thanks! These drifts are 100% dark inside, so was hoping my flash would capture the images OK!
It was fairly dry inside, but it was actually quite cool and humid compared to outside!
Stability is always an issue, and some drifts use large timber to prop up rocks. This drift doesn't have that. A few pieces of rock on the ground, but nothing that would kill you should it drop on your head.
Why that door is there, I don't know... Something was locked in there at one point... Up close, the quality of the loose rock masonry is quite impressive, as well as the fitment of that steel door!
To keep out bears and people...
All tunnels are humid...unavoidable.
Coat of whitewash would brighten the space up.
There are more in the area that can only be reached by foot, or perhaps on my dirtbike!
One road bridge is gone to many of the old sites, so it's either by foot or possibly a dirtbike!
Nice pics. Tell the truth now...were you looking for a little glint of gold as you were exploring? I would have probably had a humongous flashlight looking for that nugget that fell on the floor. LOL

While gold can be found in this area, I think Silver was actually the main product of these drift mines. You wouldn't find chunks in this type of mining... Basically the ore gets crushed into small pieces, and then various (quite toxic) chemicals are used to 'liquefy' the silver or gold for extraction!
That said, a guy might have some luck gold panning along the creeks! From personal experience I can state that you'd simply do that as a hobby, as you most likely will never find a nice nugget... just a few small flakes if you're lucky.

Highly unlikely. Drilling through pure rock like this with the equipment they had at the time could only be justified if they thought they'd find precious metals. Since they'd move from mine to mine (there are tons of them in the area), I would think the men and the equipment would be kept quite mobile...

Thanks! There are more hidden all around the area, and while I'd like to find them, I also know it's quite risky walking around in them alone, without an oxygen meter. Even with a meter, if something happened in there, you wouldn't be found for a long, long time. In fact, you may never be found depending on where you are! Some of this area is remote enough that other people simply aren't wandering around. And there's no cell service either. It's quite sobering knowing that if something happened, you are on your own... many, many miles from the nearest person.
This mine is excellent. You should purchase this mine and possibly one or two more. Mining could become your new hobby. You could add to your mercury collection.
Do you still have your mercury?
If you do, enjoy your mercury.

My dad briefly talked of a cave before he died, that he found long ago. Wish I knew where it was. Said it was by railroad tracks, and that you had to crawl to get in it, but once in, it was HUGE, and that there was a second hole to crawl through, which led to another HUGE cavern. Good panning spot. Get a pan, some deli beef jerky and 12 beer, good way to spend a hot afternoon. Note the markers in the pic (maybe). If you get a prospectors licence I believe you are still allowed to pack a piece...bonus!

And they're not too keen to let many people pack handguns on their hips these days... You have to literally prove that you're a bona fide trapper or such, and you do that for employment/income. They want company names, etc.

Around here too there's the rumours of the 'hidden mine' (of course, with the pot of gold hidden at the end also)!
That said, I have no doubt there are forgotten mines in this area! Not all mine tunnels are at road level. They would take core samples, and if the sample came back decent, they'd climb up the mountain to drill if they had to! Hard work.
They can be hard to see, especially if 100+ years of debris has fallen in front of the opening.
We often think of mines as having big, visible openings... Maybe even with a fancy structure in front. Most drift mines are nothing more than a small hole bored into the rock! Just tall enough for people, and just wide enough for ox carts!
Bet if you headed out to Banjo country in West Virginia, you could probably find some mines out there! Pic below is from there!

A farmer we knew was charging a fee for guided tours of one of the cave systems on his property and it was a blast. Started at hole in the field about the size of an abdomen and ended about a kilometre away. It was like being a worm or snake trying to get through sections of it.....having to angle shoulders and such.
Plenty of cave spiders, bats, and wombat poo...
Probably couldn't get away with doing that these days... Liability issues and such.
About 10 years ago... he had insurance for it...made a good crust too....50 bucks per head, up to 10 people at a pop...
Surprised it was that recent! Things that could potentially hurt you are being quickly outlawed in Western nations... Either by the laws or by liability lawsuits!
Although seat belts were mandated here in the early 1980's, riding in the back of pickups was still allowed. I think that law changed in the late 1980's here.

It was more like two plates of rock around 2-3 feet in distance from each other in a number of sections, opening up into smallish caverns where you could stand up or stoop a bit, then crawl out from under a sheer ledge on your belly...

I fell in love with the Blue Ridge mountains long ago. I believe they are also referred to as the Smoky Mountains or at least they make up the same mountain range?
Gatlinburg AKA "Gateway to the Smokies" we chose as honeymoon spot, as part of a Tennessee tour coming back through Virginia .. While some time ago it was a much nicer place to be that our hokey built-for-Vancouver Yuppies area
Is Gatlinburg still "dry"? Of course one does what what one wants in their hotel room (you can add whatever connotations to that you wish  )
Also prefer the Smokies and ' Blue Ridge Mountains to the Rockies here

Bet if you headed out to Banjo country in West Virginia, you could probably find some mines out there! Pic below is from there!

That would make a good Hillbilly joke - Runs on tracks and has a steering wheel ac_smile
which is likely a brake?
You are right. It is a handbrake.

I have no desire to tour an abandoned cave.
I toured the cave system on Barbados years ago....Damp, cold and dark. I got pics of some interesting limestone rock formations but all in all it was a rather uncomfortable, unsettling and rather underwhelming experience.
That would be cool. An abandoned mine, I don't know.
It was okay. They actually have a tram system that you ride down into the cave.
Mines are abandoned usually because of one of two reasons,...They are either played out or too dangerous to be used.
Amateurs crawling around in underground holes without proper safety gear and without an outside contact to alert a rescue team in the event of a mishap are complete idiots....But I think you already knew that.
We all know that mel has a death wish, so it all fits
All you need to survive in America is a .357 Magnum, 12 x toilet paper, 24 x cans of Beefaroni, 10lbs of potassium permanganate, 10lbs Sodium nitrate, 10lbs Sodium hydroxate ,5lbs iodone, 5lbs charcoal, 5lbs iron oxide, 2lbs aluminium oxide (75%+?) , and plenty of glycerin.
Do not try this at home
You forgot 12 cases of Busch Light Draught or similar swill (Blatz anyone?)...

I "think", the Smoky Mountains is in Tennessee, but is part of the Appalachian Mountain Range.
I went to Gatlinburg with my Great Aunt a few years back around Christmas time. Its only a few hours from here. We hit the moonshine distilleries lol. Actually, she wants to go back, and we're talking about maybe next week, or before the end of the month.
