I'm not really going to argue that because in an odd way Mel's self awareness or lack there of leads to a certain amount of creativity on his part. But it's creativity born of self delusion and Mel doesn't even recognize when he is being creative. So in essence the creativity is lost.
Unfortunately some of the most creative minds are and have been delusional minds but it doesn't make it any less sad or crazy. History has shown us many examples of creative individials with varying degrees self delusion and many times it ends in tragedy for those who are on the far end of the delusional spectrum.
