Title: I bought a Solo Stove Titan, SS pot, and collapsible tripod...
Post by: Frood on August 16, 2020, 08:26:40 AM
Anyone have a play with these setups before?

(//%3C/s%3E%3CURL%20url=%22https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcQpbcIdjb8TlPgCSFs9nnbQkPxiXNujWu014g&usqp=CAU%22%3E%3CLINK_TEXT%20text=%22https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/imag%20...%20g&usqp=CAU%22%3Ehttps://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcQpbcIdjb8TlPgCSFs9nnbQkPxiXNujWu014g&usqp=CAU%3C/LINK_TEXT%3E%3C/URL%3E%3Ce%3E)

They run on twigs, pine cones, and anything on the canopy floor.

Very efficient (5-6 minutes for boiled water) and quick to put out should one hear the fire authority choppers approaching.

We have our motor home, so we don't need it, but it looks like a useful invention.

They ban fires here in summer and have FLIR enabled choppers looking for heat signatures, so this is easy to extinguish quickly if I hear something coming and save a lot of money on propane too.

After the terrible fires had last year, I can understand the strictly enforced fire bans.

They go overboard with it.

The bans are quite draconian.... like our COVID lockdowns.

Are the fire bans federal or at the state level?

They want to ban outdoor barbecues in Melbourne now because 5 people signed a petition.

The stove fits inside the pot and the tripod breaks down into small pieces. Besides, it's a backup for gas cooking out of the ute and tucks away in the canopy service cupboard.

I like solution driven products anyway. Here in the People's Republic of Kim Jong Dan Andrews, you can even be fined for collecting firewood in some places by park rangers... but they wouldn't be able to prove where twigs and other ground material came from.

We use to do some back country camping...we bring a tent but some of guys would just throw a rope from tree to tree and throw a tarp over...others just in a sleeping bag around the fire.   I would just bring a simple grill...you can find rocks and pile them up, put the grill on top and make a fire...a small frying pan and a knife...and camping cups of course.  Bathe in a lake.

I was pretty young and actually never thought of some of the dangers and things that could go wrong out in the mountain...but we had all necessities, radio and some had guns.  I think back now and thank God nothing bad ever happened...

...I see stories of people going for a hike and they go missing...some never found...there's that one recent guy in Coquitlam that has been missing for a week now on a mountain hike...they can't  find him....it makes me wonder what happens to these people?!  These mountains trails are nearer to the city....where did he go?   We would drive for hours in the middle of fuckin nowhere...I would not want to be lost there.

In Manitoba, if you do not have a tent, the mosquitoes will suck every drop of blood from your body.

Here too....at least a mosquito net. Then there are the ants, spiders, snakes, centipedes, millipedes, and scorpions.

He said that the amount of mosquitos ruined everything..

The air is thick with bugs and you cant move around the forest without constantly waving your hands..

And you cant sleep without ear-plugs.. They are so loud.

"No Australian will Tolerate"???

Does your Premier have this kind of totalitarian control or is it a gross over reach of his authority?

If it is a blatant over reach of authority, what exactly are you as citizens going to do about it...Is there anything you can you about it? I know you can do something come election time but are there any legal recourse you have at the moment?

The free world needs to know this. Especially here in the US where we have little petulant shit heads running around screaming that Trump is a facist. They need to have their noses rubbed in this shit and forced to realize just how blessed they are.

I guess in hindsight giving up your guns was a bad idea.

I never gave up anything and I shouted and screamed at the time about it here.

See, I'm a multinational who was raised partially in the US. My first shotgun was a 20 gauge from Kmart, first rifle was a SKS, and first pistol was a sub compact Taurus 9mm. All of those firearms have been tenderly cared for in my absence.

If I didn't have commitments here, I would have abandoned the nation.

I don't have commitments in Winnipeg. We own a house which will go on the market in either 2022 or 2023. March 2024, we are out of Canada for good.

I have an SKS as well. It's a Yugoslav M59/66 with a 22mm grenade launcher on it. I've fired the dummy grenades with it and it's a lot of fun.

My first rifle came from Kamart as well. It was a Marlin 30AS in 30-30. It had a cheesy 10 dollar promotional 4x Marlin scope on it which has long been regulated to the garbage bin. I still have that rifle but its been recambered for 30-30 Ackly improved and the stock has been refinished...It also wears ghost ring express sights. Took my first deer with that rifle when I was 14.

Just so you know that model SKS comes standard with the launcher and it's perfectly legal..Most people think it's just a flash supresser.

Live grenades are illegal even here in the states. But what I wouldn't give for a couple of cases of live ones. I'd set up shop in Portland and I would have the streets cleaned up in a week... :laugh3:

Mine didn't have the grenade launcher end.... just the bayonet which was good for bracing in the ground at a right angle when taking a more distant shot at deer.

It's the panic that is the problem.

My family comes from an area where the blizzards are extreme and people keep extra freezers as well as fill their basement shelves with root vegetables and home canned goods for the season...

YET you can't find a loaf of bread or gallon of milk on the eve of a storm because most people live hand to mouth and when they see empty shelves, panic buy.

It's funny and sad to watch.

Gas stations with only beer and gas left...

Same thing with covid and toilet paper. Nobody needed that much but they bought shopping carts full anyway. That is the human condition.

It's a nice functional rifle. The 30AS was Marlin's budget version of the 336. It's mechanically identical to the more expensive 336, the only thing budget about it was the wood and the sights. The are usually good shooters and they are pretty easily customized and upgraded.

Hang on to those Marlins. Since Remington bought Marlin and basically ruined the Marlin company reputation, the original "JM" stamped Marlins are increasing in value like crazy. They are also becoming increasing scarce. I've been in the market for a 336A with the half mag tube and the full 24" barrel, in either 30-30 or .32 Win Special for some time now but the prices I'm seeing are outrageous. A once $300 rifle is now going for anywhere from $800 to $1200 depending upon vintage,  caliber and condition.

Where is that Dinky?

Ask me in pm if you would like to know.

That's okay.....I don't need to know.

Ha! Same rifle I got, that I got my first deer with, yes my scope needs upgrading lol. My son has the same gun, and now I have my dad's as well.

Wow! Didnt know the value had increased that much!

Shit, didnt know Remington bought 'em out either.

You had me curious, so I checked my son's model (336W), mine (336A), and my dad's (30AW). I got mine roughly 20 years ago, my dads is a lil older and has the smooth wood stock and brass trigger. My son's I got him 4 years ago I think.

Any Marlin manufactured and acquired before 2008 and has the JM stamp (John Marlin) is a keeper. Anything made after 2008 is a Remlin and not of the same quality and function. Horror stories abound regarding canted sights, bent barrels and action that are rough and jam prone are rampant regarding Remington made Marlins. I understand more recent products have come up in quality but that is only after the tons of complaints filed by extremely disappointed consumers. I know many Marlin fans that won't even consider touching a Remington made Marlin and I can't say as I blame them.

Marlin fell on hard times in the early 2000s. There mainstay product, the 336 was losing ground to more modern weapons like semi autos and cheap bolt action rifles. Remington bought Marlin with the good intentions of keeping the venerable line of hunting rifles alive. Unfortunately Remington had been aquired by Freedom Arms Group which was a conglomerate bent on mass production and cutting corners to maximize profits. Marlin fell victim to the kind of typical bean counting horseshit that kills quality products all across the business spectrum.

If you have an older generation 336A with a half mag tube and a 24" barrel you have what is considered the Holy Grail of the 336 line up. I've wanted one of those since I was a kid. Prices on those are disgusting. Even ones that look like it was dragged behind a truck sell for $800 min on auction sites. I've seen really nice ones sell for well over a grand.

I have several Marlins in my collection. The afore mentioned 30AS rechambered in 30-30 Ackly Improved. A 444s which I bought years ago for a moose hunt that never happened... :laugh3:. If you don't hold onto that rifle real tight it will give you a good scope cut above your right eye.. :laugh3: A model 780 bolt action .22 which is my pest gun, ground hogs and rabid raccoons and such and an old model 2000 .22 cal biathlon target rifle.

BTW, that is most likely not a "brass" trigger. That's gold plate.

That totally sucks on Marlin. My son has a newer one. Mine and my dads are the older ones. I got a 10 pointer hanging on my wall I got with that thing lol. First deer I ever shot at.

Hahha, my friend got one of them "scope cuts" lolol.

Glad I got that 336A when I did.

Ooooo, interesting on gold plate lol.

Next project is a diy side awning for my ute. Ordered the 3x3.9 metre tarp, expandable poles, and half dozen eyelet magnets with  40 kg strength each. Still looking for some cheap tensioners or even bungee cords for when affixing the other end to swaying trees... I've got a queen sized mosquito net that will hang pretty well from the three eyelets along each side of the tarp. Out of the sun, rain, and bug swarms without adding much vehicle weight, and it will be easier to keep the canvas swag under cover and less prone to mildew or mold once rolled up.

How frequently do you go camping Dinky?

At the moment, not at all. We're banned from virtually all travel and outdoor activities. I used to do 2-3 major trips a year, 1 week or more, and a dozen weekends away.

All the bits and pieces finally arrived in the mail for my no see-um ute side awning. Most people buy a pricey roll up roof rack attachable awning by the likes of ARB, Bundutec, or similar because they're easy to set up and you can buy tent enclosure or mesh enclosure accessories for the sides and floor, thus turning your awning into a waterproof and insect proof tent of sorts....but the weight, cost, and upkeep is pretty piss poor. Especially because it's always exposed to the elements even with the waterproof canvas covers, and if you pack them up wet, they will mildew or get mold. Pain in the arse.

Instead, I've gone with a natural green 3m x4m backpackers waterproof hammock fly/floor less tent configurable option which weighs next to nothing, can be brought inside to dry out, and doesn't advertise that your vehicle is out of place or carrying equipment in the city or suburbs.

To affix it to the steel canopy over the tub, high powered magnets with eyelits which can be repositioned. Each magnet can withstand 43 kg of resistance, and the tarp has 5 grommets on all sides, so the wind can't rip it off. On the extended end, a pair of telescopic tent poles with stakes and tent lines.

I may still acquire a telescopic spreader bar to support the lip between the two poles, but I have to see it set up under strain first.

Also got a queen sized lightweight mosquito net which can be suspended from the underside should it get unbearable.

The aim is to offer blockout sun protection and a waterproof area for the canvas swag tent, and be configurable (4m length can be turned down at the end or arranged in various ways to block out sun movement and sideways rain. The swag is waterproof canvas but if packed up wet, is prone to mildew and mold also.

There's a manufactured portable lightweight awning pack for the back of the vehicle already, and in a pinch the swag can be thrown amongst the pelican case shelving/table tops on either side for a dry sleep, but setting the awning up isn't worth it for short stays and it's clumsy having to tippy toe in a packed area to get into bed.

We usually go camping in South East BC close to where Mel lives three or four times every summer, but this year we didn't.

Got some more FDM's in overpacks for the road... 6 days for 1 people, 12 for 2 persons, and can be stretched with other things.

They'll go in an out of the way place near the front of the vehicle tub.

About 3.5 kg per tub of x6 meal days and last for 5+ years. Technically, they'll last forever as long as their individual packaging doesn't let the nitrogen out.

I'd rather carry my water apart, keep the weight down, and blend when necessary. Allows me to keep 90 litres of potable water on board and 140 litres of diesel without weighing the vehicle down significantly.

Still keep a 40 litre Engel, battery bank, and 200 watt solar blanket for fresh foods.

Everything has to fulfill at least 2 if not 4 functions, interchangeably where possible and I gut weight where possible.

Bought a few more buckets of the stuff tonight... heavily discounted. I won't be buying any more for 4-8 weeks since I've blown the monthly budget now locking in the discount.

They're not the be all and end all, but they're long life and shelf stable/nutritious easy serves with boiled water.

Leading into November, I don't know if they'll be a future buying option at this point. We'll see what the US election brings and the violence and logistics disruptions, if any...

I hope my gut instincts are wrong. There's just something in it that says keep the kid's bellies full no matter what and no matter where...

Buying non perishable shelf stuff from the supermarket only goes so far. We probably have 6-12 months worth on our shelves, but in the absence of power in a few 40-45C summer days, shit warms up and starts popping/spoiling....plus liquid weights can't be moved easily.

Those buckets are if we have to leave...

We should all watching the US election closely, Fash.... it can plunge numerous countries into recession, depression, and in some cases insurrection.

Indeed.

I think Trump is gonna win. If he does, the Left will lose its mind even more than it has already. I think the major cities will have rampant Burning, Looting, and Murdering. The scale of which is yet to be seen, if its minor, all might be ok, if its major, we can expect several outcomes. If major, Martial Law might be enacted. Supply lines of food and such will be disrupted. Police are already at a breaking point, the line keeps getting thinner. If Biden wins, and it winds up being voter fraud, you'll have some angry patriots, but I doubt it will be the level the Left will take it to, even on the minor side.

The TP aisle is already empty. The media said something about stocking of goods, so once the general public has been alerted, people have been throwing tons of food and such in their carts, like dozens of boxes of mac and cheese and such. You cant find ammo anywhere. My poor cousin, had none, but the gun dealer said he had personal stock and sold him 9 bullets for $18 for his pistol, crazy.

Lol me too. $1 too. Cheap and easy. Idahoan brand is good.

I have 2 months of food. Close to 3 if I count the beans and rice.

Good lookin' out DD, I have this awful feeling as well.

Better prepared than not.

Are you anticipating some unrest too Blazor?

Is it because of the federal election in your country?

Yep...

Those family satchels of Continental creamy dried pasta satchels are great for that and any size of canned tuna and dried peas/corn/green beans thrown in at the near start to rehydrate...

Look on the bright side. Jim Crow Joe might win. Prog money and China won't need to hire their paid rioters.

That seems reasonable.
