I know every sane rational adult thinks he is a nasty, uneducated, lazy, brainwashed neo-luddite, effeminate idiot, but he is showing surprising pragmatism with this deciusion by the NEB. He knows petroleum products have literally thousands of applications from medicine to IT to infrastructure that are essential for everyday life. He also knows worldwide consumption of oil will continue to rise over the next several decades. He also knows the Canadian economy and workers cannot just leave it in the ground and that it WILL be produced. Aboriginal groups opposing the Northern Gateway and other fossil fuel projects across the country, such as fracking, alternate between attacking them on environmental grounds and demanding a share of the profits, from what they say is their land. Indeed, settling native land claims would help move these projects along considerably.
But the bottom line is this.
No form of energy generation, extraction or transport is 100% safe. Pipelines leak, oil tankers run aground, trains carrying fossil fuels derail -- as we saw with the terrible loss of life in Lac-Megantic.
So make no mistake. The job of government is to make the extraction and transportation of fossil fuels as safe as possible.
But it's also to stand up to political pressure from green luddites, whose real agenda is to sell us on the idiotic idea of sabotaging our own economy.
And to get us to buy their snake-oil claims that wind and solar power are capable of powering a modern, industrialized economy, which is nonsense.

Sharing wealth is not logical since I would eventually run out of money and that would mean a very grim christmas for yours truly.
