Yeah the first read of it was a hard read. It was much more enjoyable the 2nd time around. They should of put Silmarilion and Unfinished Tales together. Reading Unfinished Tales, it felt kinda all over the place, and like it NEEDED to be in the Silmarilion.

The same people are fighting over the same stuff for the same reasons with the same goals with swords and spears and sticks and rocks and shit. With a few exceptions, most everyone seems to be content to sit around and live like a pack of intellectually stunted rubes. And those "exceptions" aren't very good at advancing society either...Most are just a bunch of jealous, elites with all of the worst human frailties.

To a degree there was advancement lol. But it was taught to them by the Elves. But the Elves were once "babes in the woods" so to speak and needed training too, which came from the Eldar. I do see what you saying though. But remember, "supposedly" we ourselves have come long way too in a short amount of time. And supposedly like cavemen for real long time lol.
The beginning of the first age to me was like a cross between Genesis, and Greek Mythology. I dont think they are gonna start off in the first age. But a lot has been hush hush. Was rumor it was gonna be Aragorn as a kid being raised by the Elves as the first episode, but that got squashed, when it came out to be about the 1st and 2nd age. I've heard rumor of one character that I never heard of, so I hope they dont fuck this up. They had to pay a huge sum to Tolkien Estate for the right to do it. Which is why I say it will be the most expensive series ever produced.
Its been at least 2 years, maybe 3 since I heard of all this kicking off. So I've been super excited lol. Then that damn Corona shit made them abandon set due to the Corona rules of New Zealand and had to leave.

All very valid points and as you say a good yarn is a good yarn....But of course most fantasy literature is little more than adolescent escapism that appeals to those with a overactive imagination. The real world "whys" and "hows" of intellectual curiosity are always subordinate to the romantic notions of good vs evil and the overarching concept that there is always something paranormal afoot.
I learned early on that at the end of the day, fantasy is a relatively stagnant genre of literature. There are a few standouts but they are few and far between...Most of it is pretty much a morass of tired plots, mirrored characters, and in some of the lowest examples nothing more than plagiarized dreck....Terry Brooks with his "Sword of Shannara" series of stories is a prime example...His writings are tired, rehashed, been there, done that, waste of time and paper but yet his awful shit sells like hot cakes...
