It is the largest(population) resource boom town in Canada. Has a large hospital, airport, malls and some government offices. Check out this link to give you an idea of what is available.

I asked you once before and I will ask you again, what do you do for a living other than your Mickey D's job? I can offer better advice if I know what you do.

Stayed there 2 weeks training and it was SO EXPENSIVE, you better have a well paying job because renting there is ridicules.

The place is infested. The bugs will carry you away, the black fly's and horse fly's are scary

To get on any well paid job there you have to belong to a Trade or work in the industry, they don't just hire anyone, being part of the union doesn't hurt either, they can put you on the board and when a job becomes available you get the call to come to work, well, that's how it was when i was slinging tools. (fixes hair) im a suit now.

In the 2.5 weeks of summer the North gets. Actually most of the North has that problem with bugs. Fucking huge insects.

Just so you know Keeps, the vacancy rate in Fort Mac is not quite as severe as a few years ago. In fact Edmonton may even be worse right now. I was in Sobey's and I checked an ad for renting a three bdrm, 1.5 bath townhouse and it was $1650/month + all utilities. That's expensive.

thank you for the info Shen Li. To tell you the truth I only work part time at mcdonalds now. I don't really want to leave. Don't really like my job but the people there really became like family. Made friends and all the managers are so nice. I'm on the list as one of the key crew members as I do my job really well. I am thinking about giving that electrician thing another shot. Perhaps I can leave McDonalds for a few months and see. Really.

Yep, the best way to get a job there is to have a trade, be an apprentice and belong to a union. Fly in/fly out and camp accomodations on a steady rotation. It is different than other oil and gas towns as there are fewer unskilled labour positions.

My best friend and my brother stayed in a camp ground for 3 months working there, $150.00 a month for the lot and they made there own food. 12 hour days slinging mud and drywall. My brother was able to pay off his house and buy a RV. he did very well. You just need to plan ahead and be willing to sacrifice a little.

myself, I wouldn't want to stay there again, 2 weeks was enough. the place is fill with Drunk truck drivers and ummm (whispers) whore.

VG, don't take this the wrong way, but are you nuts?? You are almost as old as me and you want to stay working in a kid's job while living with mommy and daddy? Don't you want to grow up and be a man? Don't you want a friggin gf?

You listen to me young man, you get your ass back into your electrical trade right fucking now. As soon as you do, you then drop that dead-end fast food job. You are single, so you free as a bird to fly to where ever the work may take you. If you fail to follow Auntie Shen Li's sage advice then you leave me no alternative than me flying to the left coast and smacking some sense into ya. Now get your ass in gear and that's an order. ;)

Open camps are what you are talking about Keeps. A bit more rental available now though.

Drywalling is a tough way to earn a buck anywhere though. What do you do now for a living now Keeps?

No, it's actually a very multi-racial place and even has a mosque. The smaller resource cities like FSJ or High Level are far more redneckish.

How does one go from drywall and mudding to purchasing? Doesn't seem like a natural progression.

Anyway, that's a good progression from the field to a purchasing. That's what makes the industry so awesome are the opportunities for career growth that few other industries can provide.

When i first started out it was really easy to get in, Had to belong to a union though and that was my first experience with Unions, I have good and bad to sat about them, Back in the day we had to fill out cards for UI and if you went to the Union Hall and got it stamped with you number UI took about 2 weeks less to get the ball rolling so there was plus points for them, now (shrug) i stopped paying my dues. Im salary, i can come and go as i please. 23 years in the business... yikes im old

My husband was in the IBEW for a while Keeper..

He liked it, but he has been with a non-unionized very specialized oilfield services company for most of his working life now..

VG is an electrical apprentice working at Mickey D's?? I have no idea what year he is in, but I know he would be better off in the trades than a Mcjob. Weebles made the move and is glad he did. VG should be doing the same and soon.

A red seal electrician in Canada takes 4 years as an apprentice with 8 weeks in school each year..

My husband has a master electrician designation which can be achieved after so many years as a journeyman electrician.

Was working full time with this big electrical company. They would hire like 8 people at a time for hard labour work. Hundreds of boxes and materials. Lots of lifting and moving. I had trouble carrying my own tools. Many of the guys who I started with quit. Everybody on my team wanted to leave. I was the one who lasted the longest. As a skinny underweight 115ib guy with a bad back the heavy load was just too much. I have the body size of a teenage girl. Have to shop for clothes at the kids section. Anyways. I would like to work for a smaller company who only does work for houses and not massive towers where I just do cheap labour work. Some of the pipes were so heavy that I couldn't even lift. Others had no problem lifting them. It's not just simple wiring where you just use your hands. One of my coworkers wanted to get into a trades. She's super cute. I warned her. In construction she'll get sexually harassed. When I was working as an electrical apprentice people would talk inappropriate things about women every day. No place for pretty girl.

The girls can take it. Construction workers only talk to female coworkers in inuendos.  They would feel sad if they wouldnt get sexually harassed. :D Females like when a big barkened construction workers hand grabs their tushy.

You got the new guys job. We had the same, months of all day lifting over a 100kg IT-wire rolls on shelves. And pipe lifting.

Then the new guys came after us and we educated them about how things are.

In constructing houses, youll still have to do alot of heavy lifting. At first anyway.

Ah ffs VG, how old are you this year? I think you are about two years younger than me. I will be 30 in September and I think you will be 28 this year. Anyway, you are talking like a kid in high school. Don't you have any desire to have a REAL profession which would allow you to have a girlfriend your own age(not talking about the high school girls you work with) and your own place? In other words an independent man who can stand on his own two feet.

None of my business, but how long do you plan on extending adolescence? How long in p/t jobs for kids and living with mommy? Why are you so scared of growing up?

There are lots of women working in the trades in Alberta. The kind of work you described would not be typical at all here on large industrial projects. When working in a chemical plant for example you would not be carrying a load up the tower ladders. If some 50 year old woman can do it, I'm sure you can. I mean you can't possible be that delicate?

Why don't you ask Fash to ask her husband about opps in the industry. Even if you don't want to move, maybe he can knows of a camp job where you can do a hitch and decide if you want to get back into an adult's job or not.

No, you are wrong Odinson. I was born in 1984 and I remember him writing I believe on Frosty's forum that he was born in 1986. I have nothing against him personally, but he is incredibly immature for his age. Not entirely his fault though because his parents have enabled his Peter Pan mentality. If he wants to grow up and be a man, I am willing to offer as many leads as I can come up with. If he wants to keep sponging off his parents, working p/t at kids job and chasing little high school girls then he's his parents problem forever.

My husband is a pipe fitter by trade and 4 and 6" sch 40 steel pipe is heavy stuff. He lifts it all the time like it is nothing but it wasn't always so. There is a right way and a wrong way to do it. It takes a while to get the hang of and as you do it you will become physically more able to handle it. So don't feel bad a lot of guys bigger than you struggle to lift stuff like that.

BTW, if you are 115lbs I kind of think heavy trade work may not be for you. Maybe a nice retail job might be more your speed?

Renee, I agree there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. Like you said it takes a while to get the hang of things. VG is giving up too damned easily because "it's hard". Don't encourage him to quit please. He needs to be a man and drop the whole Peter Pan syndrome. We have 120lb women working as insulators, pipe-fitters, boilermakers, electricians, hd wrenches, instrumentation mechanics, millwrights and machinists. He is quite capable of doing the work if he applies himself. He finds living at home at the age of 28, working p/t at Mickey D's and chasing girls in high school easier than growing up and being a man. His parents and others seem to condone such parasitical behaviour simply because he is "teenie weenie". No excuse in the Iron Chink's books.

Shen Li, you are being very cruel to TheVancouverGuy..

He is a very nice boy and I am always happy to have him here and read his posts..

Ridiculing him is not a good way to encourage him..

Besides, what he does or where he lives is none of your business..

Be nice, be supportive and try to offer advice without being so judgemental.

Not a fucking chance my friend. Coddling him has done a lot of fucking good now hasn't it? No work ethic, no girlfriend, p/t Mcjob, 28 and likes high school girls, lives at home and has no plan to change that. He hasn't matured since grade 12. Its gonna take over a year to leave on such a trip. If you choose one of the most famous casinos, it seems to be pretty tough to get a room for a week. So many rent them for just one night.

True, not everyone is cut out for the trades, but I hate to see someone give up so easy and for the same reason...I'm small. There are women that work in the trades who could just as easily have milked that excuse, but hey they got bills to pay and don't have mommy and daddy to fall back on. While it is true what he does with his life is none of my business, when he posts about it I am more than entitled to give my opinion. He may even benefit from my knowledge and experience too. However, it is his right to extend adolescence into his 40's if he so chooses and his parents continue to enable him. It is my choice to say just how parasitical I find such behaviour.

Just so you know, I don't hate VG. As I said before, it is not entirely his fault.

Well OK, but what would you do if you had a 28 year old son still living with you and working p/t at Mickey D's. No plan to become independent and no interest in real f/t meaningful work? I would never allow that to happen with my son.

This brings up another issue too, namely overly doting Asian parents. Scared to push the baby bird out of the nest and let them soar.

Hey as long as he was bringing home Big Macs for his mom regularly, I wouldn't care.

But seriously, each to his own gifts. Some people just take longer to grow up than others especially young males. Hell my older brother lived at home until he was almost 28. I was beginning to think that he was going to live at home until my parents either died or moved to a retirement home. The only difference is he had a decent job. He was just to freaking cheap to go out and get his own place. He had it easy at home; mommy cooked and did his laundry and he could come and go as he pleased. It must have really sucked for him when he finally got married and got a place of his own and had to live like a real person.

No offense Renee, but I think the reason you're being so objective is because VG is not your son. I couldn't imagine a conservative chick like you saying nothing to your 28 y.o son living at home and working p/t at Mickey D's while chasing high school girls. I have a son and I can tell you I will NEVER allow that to happen. Your brother is lucky your mommy is not like me that's for sure.

However, you and Fash have made your point. He's not likely to start taking his life seriously just because I  browbeat him. You're right too, some men are indeed late bloomers and there is not much you can do to change that.

I always wanted a brother or sister to play with when I was growing up, but if I was VG's older sister I think he may never come out of his room. Well maybe if he had earplugs in. Besides, I would probably tire of winning his fights for him.

Fash's response was no surprise, but I am surprised by Renee though. I was certain her opinion on this would have been an identical match to ours. However, I got thinking about something, I don't have a brother(or a sister). I grew up as an only child. They both understand what adolescent boys are really like in a way that I don't.

I'm not saying I wouldn't say anything to him but if he was at least employed and I was seeing signs of him maturing I would just let it take its course.  Adolescent males are a real pain in the ass. They want to fly on their own but they generally have no clue how to do it. It is a scientific fact that the male brain matures more slowly than the female brain. Their bodies also mature more slowly as well. It takes young males much longer to recognize that for every action they take or don't take there is a reaction. Some of them have very little grasp of consequence and it takes them an awful long time to get their shit together; some never do.

Case and point just look at our very own Oddstain. He is by all indication in his early to mid-30s but he still thinks and acts like a dumbass 16 year old. The trumped up bravado, his inability to get along with those who are different and his lack of understanding about women in general all point to a man with an adolescent brain that hasn't caught up with his proper role in society.

The only problem with your approach is that VG is maturing in reverse. He had an adult job and gave it up. He has a kids job and only wants to work p/t at that. Then there is the interest in high school girls...fucking creepy!! No, his parents have to lay down the law or he will be living with them 5 or 10 years from now.

If what you are saying is true and he is regressing then I would probably have a sit down with him and find out just what the hell is going on. If he is regressing as you say then there is probably some influence at work like low self-esteme or perhaps mental illness such as depression an anxiety disorder or even something like Asperger Syndrome. It's kind of like bed wetting; people don't just pee where they sleep for no good reason; discovering that reason is the key to fixing the problem.

I kind of doubt that his inability to mature and his alleged penchant for chasing high school girls comes from his parent's permissive attitude. If what you are saying is true he lacks the motivation required to move on with his life and become a successful individual. I would have to find out why that is before I could address the issue.

I would find out the reasons why he maturing in reverse...and then I'd kick his ass into manhood.

I do like VG though.

Maybe VanGuy would kick your ass.

Try to be civil when you meet a commie asshole like eves whom defends N-Korean dictatorship and thinks of Russia as a rolemodel. The bitch has never been to Russia... The infrastructure is decayed at best.

She of course defends Serbs and hates NATO. General Mladic shouldnt have videotaped the massacre. :D

Arkans tigers.

Too bad that idiot greenskin bitch didnt get some sweetloving from western troops.

I´ve only seen weak people defending communism.. Like my sisters stalker, a well known commie whom used to stalk females and videotape people to make some behaviour researches.

There's no forum on the internet which forces anyone to be hateful and uncivil. It's always a personal decision.

This may be the internet, but we still have to look at ourselves in the mirror.

Yea but theres always some1 whom just shits on your posts even though every1 else agrees.

Hey, I defended female rights in afro-american forums and every1 agreed with me until some ahole blackdude started posting my pic everywhere and made fake accounts.

That caused the females to attack the dude to defend their whiteman odie. Turned into a hate forum.

I was for a good cause. :D

No matter what you do or say, the place turns into a warzone.

Even the metalhair men thread died because if an ethnic female likes metal music, she is a bedwench sellout.

Gotta retaliate.

Hate is the first step to luuuuvvvv, shen li. lol

Racial slurs from both sides is pretty much hate. Killing babies, blasting heads into oblivion and threatning to kill me if I ever date his daughters is hating. lmao!

You're going to have to cool it, Odie. We've been letting it slide but it can only go on for so long.

It can get nasty here, but you have got to keep family out of it.

You wouldn't want us to say nasty things about your family. So don't.
