China Now Owns a Record $1.317T of U.S. Government Debt (//http)

China stepped up its purchases of U.S. government debt late last year, increasing its holdings of Treasurys to an all-time record of $1.317 trillion in November, government data released this week revealed.

The statistics underscore how reliant the U.S. and Chinese economies are on one another even as political tensions occasionally emerge.

According to figures inadvertently released Wednesday evening on the U.S. Treasury Department website, China's holdings of Treasurys increased by 0.9% in November to $1.317 trillion, up from $1.305 trillion in October. Year-over-year, China's holdings rose 11.3% from $1.183 trillion.

The $1.317 trillion figure exceeds China's previous record high in July 2011 of $1.315 trillion, according to the government data.

China's appetite for government debt has been driven by its huge amount of foreign-exchange reserves, which surged to a record of $3.82 trillion at the end of 2013. The demand for Treasurys does not appear to have been seriously eroded by concerns about the U.S. fiscal situation.

Ms. cc li tarte, I am not very knowledgeable about these things, but I can't help but think this presents a problem for the United States..

How can they admonish China's human rights or environmental record when they are so dependent on China loaning them money?

It just hit a record high, but actually, this has been going on for a very long time.

The US has abdicted its former position of strength ...... was doing so before to a degree but the past 5 years had witnessed its total downfall as an influence of any stature in so many ways

It's nothing personal Renee and by the way, we both know the only reason the US did that was because of a) the cold war and b) they were about 50% of the world's GDP after WW2. Situation is not exactly the same anymore.

The Taiwan Relations Act means nothing now.

If by some chance the DPP gets control of the "presidency"  of the CHINESE island of Taiwan and the Pescadores in 2016, Beijing will enlist Washington's aid in reigning in their splittist rhetoric. Washington knows who butters their bread. This is just reality Fash. The chances of Taiwan ever making formalizing their de facto independence nowadays and getting recognized by the international community are virtually nil.

Yes the situation is not the same.

But let's face it, why do you think the Chinese are buying our debit? Because it stabilizes the US economy and the Chinese need a stable US economy. They also need the US economy to grow. If US economy grows (like it is supposed to, not as it has under Odumbo) their assets appreciate and they get their return on investment.

Don't worry the Chinese will get their money and hopefully the US will profit from it as well. At least that's how it is supposed to work.

Hey, I'm Chinese. We don't believe in wasting money on aid. Investing is good for us and the nations we invest in.

I was just being facetious with the comment about not lending Washington anything more than change for coffee. Well, sort of.

China's economy and government could collapse which would increase support for Taiwanese independence in Taiwan and around the world.

No, it doesn't dipshit.
QuoteAndrew Mason, senior fellow at the East-West Center (EWC) in Honolulu and a professor of economics at the University of Hawaii, points out that "Japan is now the oldest population in the world, but others are catching up." The reasons others are snapping at Japan's heels for the dubious title are not only improved living and health conditions but rapidly declining birth rates. Mason notes that Singapore "has reached 1.2 births per woman ... (and) South Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the world – slightly less than 1.1 births per woman." Mason adds that China may not be far behind, already boasting an anemic birth rate of 1.6, and "it will soon begin to experience rapid aging ... just how rapid is unknown and will depend in part on how quickly China moves to relax the one-child policy."

I have been having really sick ass dreams... A dream about some brigands breaking into my house.

I thought it was real and I was afraid... I tried to punch one of them and I hit a steel shelf right beside our bed..

I´m a sleep walker and sleep talker. I´m loads of fun. I´m always in battle.

Lately russkies have been robbing finnish houses and I have a sword of a Hakkapeliitta, muscets, SS steel helmet, old pocket watch and a very valuable painting in my house.

Finnish hakkapeliittas were feared warriors whom attacked the enemy in a beserker mode and hacked the enemy into pieces... The appearance of hakkapeliittas made enemies piss their pants.

The sword is priceless to collectors. I have been offered a 6 number sum for it.

Yeah right, maybe during the 10th century but in modern times an army without discipline is no army at all.

Yes "calvery" as in Finnish cavalry in the service of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden during the 30 Years War. They were also used by the Swedes during the Polish Swedish War in the 16th century. Regardless of whether or not they hacked the enemy to pieces I'm sure they didn't act like "berserkers" while under the command of the Swedes. By the 17th century most established European armies were pretty regimented especially when made up of professional soldiers.

BTW, it is my understandings that despite what Fins think the "hakkapeliittas" were not very well known in most places on the European mainland so I doubt that these Finnish wild men were seen as being as fearsome as you describe. It very nice that you are proud of your military history but let's not go crazy shall we.

China wants to turn Canada into a subservient client state just like they are trying to do with every other country including the United States. They use their disloyal legions of Canadascam Chinese here to work against Canada's interests and for China's.

China wants to turn Canada into a subservient client state just like they are trying to do with every other country including the United States. They use their disloyal legions of Canadascam Chinese here to work against Canada's interests and for China's.

I do not like China Gary, but that is no reason not to trust the loyalty of Chinese Canadians.

I cannot understand how one makes friends with internet avatars... It would be different if I actually felt like there is a nice person behind it all.

I think you would be a nice person to get drunk with.

Dont have to get drunk... Just be comfortable and I´ll tell you some experiences that I´ve had.

AA has a direct flight from YVR to DFW. Others like Air Canada and United, you have to take an indirect flight like going to YVR to DEN then from DEN to DFW. I will miss having a direct flight from YVR to DFW if AA goes under.

American Airlines Bankruptcy Fears Drive Down Stock

By JAD MOUAWAD

Published: October 3, 2013

Shares in American Airlines' parent company tumbled 33 percent on Monday on fears that the airline could be forced into bankruptcy as a slowing economy reduced demand for seats on its planes.

The sell-off reflected investors' increasing nervousness that American Airlines, with high debt levels and high labor costs, might be too weak to weather another economic downturn. Its competitors, meanwhile, have consolidated and strengthened their share of the airline market.

The decline on Monday was the steepest drop for American's parent, the AMR Corporation, in a decade, and it precipitated a general sell-off in airline stocks throughout the day. AMR shares closed at $1.98 after setting off repeated automatic trading halts meant to prevent widespread losses. Still, Delta Air Lines and United Continental Holdings both fell more than 11 percent, and US Airways lost nearly 16 percent.

Doesn't Dallas/Fort Worth have some fine shrinks? You should check them out when you are down there.
