With more than 640,000 Albertans — 61.7 per cent —voting in favour of the question. Just under 400,000 Albertans voted 'no.'

That is a good result. Let's see what Jason Kenney does with it. But, I read it's all but guaranteed at this point anyway that the NDP will ride the anti-Kenney vote back to power. They backed the no side. Trudeau will stall Kenney until the next Alberta election.

I had no idea how extreme Mayor Gondek was until she won the mayoral race..

I like direct democracy, I'm glad Alberta held these referendums including the one on flouride in the water in Calgary.

The problem with direct democracy is that Governments only use it for minor and irrelevant issues. Direct democracy as applied in the West gives you no control over government powers, budget proposals, major expenditures, selection and dismissal of Ministers, the power to dismiss MP's or any other major action of government. Governments of all colours hate referendums because they take away their powers. But they'll feed the electorate breadcrumb referenda just to maintain the illusion that we live in a "democracy".
Our referendum on equalization was a major issue. However, True Dope won't honour the results.

Meaning fewer people can control government decisions that effect all.
Does Switzerland have low voter turnout for referenda? This is the first I heard that.

Not sure about turnout, but Switzerland allows public to vote on many if not all items

Taiwan has had referendums too..
Canada seems to have an aversion to direct democracy.
