There are certainly Australians that visit these countries with sinister intent. I'd happily cut their legs off.
When I visited Cambodia, I connected through Singapore. On the flight to Siem Reap, there were many males flying solo, myself included. Some were definitely scholars and researchers (like the Yank I sat next to) but some looked like devious sleazeballs. I felt self conscious the whole time I was there because I was travelling alone and thus worthy of suspicion.

It is one of the great wonders of the ancient world, far more complex and fascinating than the Pyramids.
Siem Reap hosts up to 10,000 tourists per day from all over the world, with probably the vast majority from China. I saw very little debauchery of any kind, compared to the overt and lurid sex trade in other cities. Cambodians are not Thais.
And if you do drugs in Cambodia, you risk your neck being stretched.
