I thought drinking beer fast was a prerequisite for spectator sports in Australia.

Used to be....
....but now in the absence of complete lockdown bullying, Aussie police are setting their sights on pre-beer drinking crimes...
These cowards need to be hung in the streets....

It's really fun to play. I played a couple of seasons when I came over here. It's a very social game.

Yeah, sure.
I did though... despite your doubt.
I was a good fielder and ran faster than anybody else on the team...my bowling skills were however all over the place. They'd usually get me in the later half of the day because I wasn't consistent. I could bowl 3-4 balls in a row or knock out the wicket in my first go.
That's because I was shown how to bowl but I didn't grow up with the culture.
I was told that I was a fast spin bowler.... and when it went right, the opposing team cracked the shits.
So much movement down the pitch that batters would run out half way nearly and get done.
But I never got the consistency to do it regularly. I could do it 3 times in a row and my team went nuts or I could totally fuck the pooch.
It was really fun.

LOL .. I agree.
I actually got invited to play it in England as a late teen .. I held the bat baseball style which got many noses in the air
It's boring even to play let alone watch .. to them it's a whole afternoon affair .. the goodies were good

He probably isn't one. Just a guess.
Although we do have ONE trannie who once played and coached in the AFL.
Then...

While the end objectives are fairly similar, it (and Brit which I'm guessin are similar to Aussie) are quite different from N America's more sophisticated game  in many ways  ac_smile
And then there's that  .. well "faceoff" type of  thingy that ends up looking  like a mass orgy of writhing male bodies scrunched tightly together & moving against each other  en masse .. each body "supposedly"  (rolleyes)  trying to get the ball
I suppose many play or watch just for those exquisite moments   :sneaky2:

It's uniquely Australian.
It's a running and kicking game, with a bit of bouncing in it.

Proving yet again that women know nothing about football.
Australian football is played over four quarters, with each quarter lasting between 25 and 30 minutes.
It is non stop. Unlike "sophisticated" American football where every minute or so play is stopped, discussed, the referees hold a meeting, players call their girfriends and the coaches throw hissy fits at their iPads.
Unlike the clearly misnamed American "Throwball", Australian football actually combines both foot and ball in a movement called kicking. Distances of 50 metres or more are standard, and precision is essential. Australian football does not require competitors to use two teams that interchange during the game.
And I query why such a "sophisticated" game requires armour. The only armour Australian footballers wear is mouthguards.
I also wonder why, for such a "sophisticated" game, American football is played predominantly by African Americans. Is it racist?

				Every sport has its merits.

I don't disagree. That is why I never claim one sport to be better than another.
Some offer better entertainment than others, others require greater skill and expertise.
I prefer a fast flowing, high scoring game than a stop-start snooze fest. I can't watch soccer, or cricket.

No sport offers the excitement that golf does.

But I cannot watch golf.
