Title: And now for something completely different...
Post by: Bricktop on January 25, 2022, 12:40:19 AM
I'm going to list ten movies I have seen that were hailed as masterworks and I found them utterly dull.

Feel free to add your own.

1. Dances with Wolves. 3 hours of tedium Americana that went nowhere, said nothing, served no purpose.

2. Gravity. Amazing special effects combined with an thoroughly absurd plot starring two very overrated actors.

3. Chariots of Fire. This thing won an Oscar because critics assumed that somewhere in the dross was a "message". There wasn't. Just dross.

4. Star Wars. The last one. Absolutely awful, predictable and another attempt to portray women as men. They are not. They never will be. They should be grateful for that.

5. The Revenant. The World's Greenest Actor, Leo De Caprio in a silly western "back from the dead" plot driven by "deus ex machina" nonsense.

6. Roma. This thing won an Oscar!!! It has to be seen to be believed...but first you have to stay awake long enough to realise it isn't about anything.

7. Quantum of Solace. I love James Bond, and Daniel Craig did the role proud. But this thing made no sense, had no suspense, and wasted all its talent.

8. Interstellar. Stellar it aint. Confusing, irrational, nonsensical. Might have known with the very dull cast in it.

9. Yesterday. A feckless failed INDIAN song writer wakes up to find that he is the only person who knows Beatle songs and becomes a superstar. Yes, it IS that bad.

10. Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. It defies belief that this tired character is being dusted off for another farcical run around. At least it featured the "fridge" moment that will be remembered as the silliest escape routine in cinema history.

Anyone else?

The ones that I saw I agree.

I saw Munich, Edge of War. Disappointing. On the other hand, Driven about John DeLorean was better than I expected.

Gotti with John Travolta as the legendary head of the Gambino crime family sucked. So did El Camino.

10 lauded musical artists that I find dull and boring.

1. Eric Clapton. Overrated by a long way. Not seen him live...but from accounts, that's a good thing.

2. Fleetwood Mac. Not the original Fleetwood Mac. The Abba tribute band that calls themselves Fleetwood Mac. Dull.

3. Mariah Carey. The screeching makes my ears bleed.

4. Coldplay. I know...everyone thinks Coldplay are dull.

5. ELO. Nice little pop tunes, but Jeff Lynn is as animate as a cigar store Indian and looks even less interested in his songs than I am.

6. U2. Dreary at best, sanctimonious at worst. Yawn.

7. Elton John. His best music was decades ago. Literally.

8. Metallica. The same noise repeated as nauseum.

9. Ed Sheeran. I haven't listened to much of his stuff, but what I've heard is background dross.

10. Jethro Tull. I loved JT in the Aqualung/Thick as a Brick days...but since then they've played the same songs over and over.

I haven't included some artists like Adele, Britney or Justin Bieber because I've  never listened to them. Otherwise they may have made the list.

Can you give an example.

Chicago PD, Bluebloods, SVU, Law & Order etc. etc. are all cow-towing to new softer on crime rules of the new road  .. and are adding more and more gay and even trans people

Some long time members coming out gay etc. etc.

New ones all have a married to gay co-star  the new Law & Order International a classic example

There is a recent further Law & Order (I forget the suffix as It came on so woke & usually after white supremacists  I don't watch it)

It's first year for example the entire show was in pursuit of "extremely obvious" islamic plots from a mosque .. only to end up at the last moment being a white supremacist made it look like islamics ... references to January 6 supremacists in many crime shows +++++++++++

Permeation of CRT creeping into many (white guy bad, all others good)

I have no comedy shows I watch at this point in time but peaking in quickly I'm seeing more blatant  woke that the others I mentioned

That's just skimming the top

Air Supply most definitely.

I'm not sure about AC/DC. Not a huge fan but they can get your feet tapping...especially from the Bon Scott era (he's from Adelaide!!!). Maybe other members have views on them.

Whilst your bovine reference is rather pointed and unintentionally witty...it's "kow-towing". With a 'k'.

I admit I liked Bon Scott's vocals compared to the Dan McCafferty of Nazareth clone that replaced him. Bon Scott could do a good blues number. But, every song since their first album had the same riff changed up just slightly.

Yet Radiohead, REM, Genesis and The Smiths are regarded as luminaries. Not a single album of any of those bands with the exception of Genesis pre-Collins is worth wasting time on.

The most overrated band of all time is the Beatles.

The Beatles were the spearhead of a social and cultural revolution that gave the youth of that era inspiration to break free from 50's dogma and conformity.

Their music challenged the status quo of society for all time and gave birth to the golden age of rock and roll.

There isn't a published song of theirs that is not known the world over. They still outsell many modern artists, and their songs are better and more listenable than most of the dross churned out by Britney, Taylor, Kanye and U2.

Old Herman is going to change this up and mention an underrated band. That band is Triumph. A three piece band from Toronto featuring the wicked guitar picking of Rik Emmett. They never reached the heights that another trio from Toronto, Rush did.

Here they are doing an early number, Lay it on the Line.

I like the Guess Who too. Unlike Triumph, they did reach the big time. I like BTO that grew out of the Guess Who and I like solo Burton Cummings. Old Jock said he graduated from the same high school in Winnipeg that Burton Cummings attended.

OK.

The ten most underrated bands and artists.

1. The Yardbirds. Equal to the Rolling Stones and gave rise to Led Zeppelin but never really got the raps it deserved.

2. Gary Numan (Tubeway Army). Pioneer of electronic rock.

3. k.d. Lang. The finest female vocalist in the world.

4. Ian Hunter. Former Mott the Hoople pilot who still turns out fine music.

5. Roxy Music. One of the most influential bands of the 80's.

6. Stan Ridgeway. Former Wall of Voodoo leader who's quirky style combines country with rock and a touch of blues.

7. Arthur Lee and Love. Early psychedelic pioneers who's songs sound even better today.

8. The Zombies. Only one album before they broke up, that has recently been reconsidered as a 60's pop masterpiece. Gave rise to Alan Parsons Project and Argent.

9. The Kinks. Long before punk and metal, the Kinks were pounding out hard rock songs that inspired many of their peers.

10. Gerry Rafferty. Famed for "Baker Street" mostly (as a one hit wonder by some), but his albums are even better.

I agree with one, four, six, eight and nine. Janis Joplin is the greatest female vocalist of all time. Annie Lennox is good too, but I don't like her style.

10 musical performers I can't stand, even though they may be quite good...

1. Metallica. Horrible, tuneless, repetitive noise. I don't see the point.

2. U2. Boring, also repetitive and too sanctimonious by far.

3. Phil Collins. Does the same song over and over with slight variations. May appeal to people with no imagination.

4. Fleetwood Mac (current variation). Bland and banal.

5. Eminem. Rap is bad at any time, but white rap is worse.

6.  Mariah Carey. That screaming is like having a hacksaw blade scraping your ears.

7. Guns N Roses. Axl Rose is an asshole.

8. Elton John. Did three great albums a long time ago and nothing new since.

9. James Blunt. No explanation needed if you know THAT song.

10. Proclaimers. Silly Scottish comedy act.

OK. TV series that REALLY sucked despite all the hype.

1. Game of Thrones just for that utterly awful final series. How to ruin a good show in just 6 weeks.

2. Lost in Space (Netflix series). The original was more comedic but fun to watch. This thing sucks like a space aliens tentacle.

3. Dr Who. The latest series featuring a female Doctor. Because...woke. Not only was the female a poor actor for the role, the writing was worse.

4. Sweet Tooth (Netflix) Apparently a Marvel comic story. But it was just comic, with the worst CGI I've ever seen.

5. American Horror Story. First couple of seasons OK, but it's all horror and no story since then.

6. Batwoman. Because even lesbians need to feel heroic sometimes.

7. Friends. Typical American banality with typical "sitcom" storylines. Big hype for a big nothing burger.

8. Family Guy. Tries to emulate The Simpsons, but using infantile crudity in lieu of genuine comedy.

9. King Of The Hill. Was that show supposed to be funny, cos I missed that bit.

10. Westworld Series Three. More wokeness, less interest.

That's got to add to the monthly bill as no service (eg. Netflix etc. etc.) is cheap and no 1 service provides all shows

You like Ikea furniture Zetsu?

Yea, it's hard not like them when most of them are low priced, easy to assemble, stylish / creative designs and all pieces fits like a glove.  ac_cool

I'm proud to say that nothing in condo was purchased from Ikea.

Meanwhile aside for my 3 tier bookshelves, tv stand, everything is from Ikea, lol.  But it makes me wonder why would you avoid buying Ikea furniture?  I mean there's a reason why it's open world wide, unless you prefer to support small shops.

I don't like their furniture. I'll take Leon's or Bad Boys.

Ikea furniture doesn't like to take heavier weights.

Bookshelves, desks, and pantry units bow....

I'm sure you're right, but years ago we bought a "brand" name bookcase and within a year the shelves bowed.

That was the last time we'd spend big bucks on brands that pretend to be superior but are the same chipboard in different veneers.

Notice how the previously bad movies are now good movies.

The new Terminator movies make T-3 look like Citizen Kane.

Rise of Skywalker was just lazy... "somehow palpatine returned".

Would have made a lot more sense if he had hidden away a massive fleet of regular stardestroyers.

Thousands of copypaste planet-killing stardestroyers... Its just ridiculous even for star wars.

Once again the leaks and fan theories were better than the actual movie.

Maybe they should hire a group of Star Wars nerds to write the movie.

I do admit Ikea uses low density particle boards for most of their shelves and coffee tables, though some are good hard wood or steel reinforced but comes at a much higher price tag.

I did bought 2 office chair at home and a sofa at work, but the most I can rate them is 3 out of 5 stars, it'll take a while before I get used to sitting on it.

Zetsu, I find that people who like Ikea really like Ikea.
