My daughter is 25 years old and refuses to learn to drive. She thinks I'm made of money and can afford to taxi her at her convenience. We gave her 11 grand to buy a car and get her license. Nope, didn't do what we said and now she thinks she's going to get me to take her to her new hospital job. Sorry, gas is way to high and I'm not no fucking taxi.

Ok, rant over.

Squish is really going through a brat stage. Everytime we go to the store she expects a treat.

Its ridiculous. Partly (okay mostly) my fault because I tend to let her get something more times than I dont lol

Wait til she's older, hopefully you do better raising her than I have with this ungrateful ass. Be thankful she's not bipolar like my oldest daughter.

My older ones are turning out pretty good.

But I admit....I was much more strict with them. I was a single mom most of their childhood. I was already on limited funds and I was afraid of my daughters lacking discipline. So I was harder on them. I mean in was still fun and all but they didnt get away with anything.

This one? Omg. Shes a total diva. Adorable....but shes the baby and she KNOWS that. And not only is she the baby? Shes my in laws first blood grandbaby.

Geeezz.....that's so strange. Usually kids cannot wait to drive.

I almost died of a fucking heart attack the first time I ever got in the car with my daughter lol. I was fine....until she pulled out of the parking lot and terror just washed over me.

She did good though. I didnt do good lol

Goof for you kid. Stick to your guns. My boy is 31 with one kid and another on the way. He is doing good now, but six years ago my ex wife and I were getting nervous. We cut off the help, and he turned into a man. Best thing we did for him.

I've been to Los Angeles and I've seen the traffic, but still driving is necessary for her independence.

My daughter's also afraid of driving, but she's only 15

I tried teaching her on an automatic, she didn't want

I learned to drive when I was 13 and I'd take the car for a joyride every chance I had LOL

My daughter expects everyone to drop what they're doing for her. Or else it's"you never help me" "you're a shitty mother".

I guess I am. Oh well

This is usually not the parents' fault.

You can give a good education, teach them moral and values, but then you have schools, the media, politicians and a bunch of fuckheads telling them the exact opposite

Many of these kids today are living an never-ending panic attack.

My stepson is starting his masters in mechatronics after he graduated in mechanical engineering. A smart kid, never brought the smaller bit of problems home. Never did drugs, got drunk only once as far as I know, never got into a fight and yet, he wants nothing to do with relationships or a partying life.

He enjoys staying home playing WoW of watching Netflix

My daughter is more sociable, but she has many of the same traits.

But when I look at the other kids, especially on my ex-wife's side, I'm glad I came back to Brazil in 2008 and educated them my way

Anyway, don't feel bad about your kids' actions. I imagine you did your best, but these days, sometimes it's not enough.

Their generation feels entitled. My 23 year old is the child that never gave me problems. She's beautiful, married with a good job and is an outstanding mother. I get accused of favoring her, but wouldn't you if they made your life easier? She doesn't expect anything expect grandma duties here and there and even then, it's not much.

I don't think it works at all. What worked for me was giving positive attention for good behaviour and not protecting against the natural consequences of poor behaviour, but learning from it.  There's enough punishment in the world already without manufacturing it.

Maybe, but my son learned REAL quick to not make me angry lol. And he knew honesty was always the best policy, never lie to Dad.

I only whooped him for something real bad, like lying or something. At one point, I did quit, and simply grounded him. But his mom would unground him when I would be at work or some shit, so it didnt work.

I was whooped until I was 12, the day I blocked my drunken step dad's hand, blocked his shove, and returned it. Fucker never touched me again. My karate was too powerful for him by then

 This is exactly correct.

Spanking may get immediately compliance....which if you are dealing with a toddler can be nessesary at times. But only for immediately compliance.....it teaches absolutely nothing positive.

I dont like to get into these debates or discussions about spanking kids because we have all done it and most of us are sensitive about it because it rips your heart out. And people are only trying to do their best and we already are hard on ourselves. I'm mercilessly hard on myself.  That's why nothing said to me online bothers me much. Odds are good I've been way meaner to myself long before some stranger took their shots.

I don't like making people feel bad or like they have failed and you never know how your words will be received. So I'll just be blunt hopefully readers will know where my heart is on it.  I'm just sharing knowledge.

When you spank your child.....if they are older, you are teaching them to be sneaky. And to be afraid of you....which is not a good thing as they start growing and driving and going out with friends. You want them to come to you if they screw up really bad....not try to hide it.

When they are toddlers? They have no idea why you hit them except that you are mad and frustrated. So guess what has just been taught?  That if they are mad and frustrated....the thing to do is hit.

Little toddler/child brains are so caveman level. Literal. They dont get nuance. And they watch us VERY closely and they will mimick us. And they will receive messages from our behaviour that are so simple. Spank or swat a toddler? They dont really think "oh man....I shouldnt have done that and I was just corrected"... they think "I made mommy mad somehow and she hit me. So when I feel mad, I should hit".

I taught pre school for some years and the biggest hitters and biters were kids I know got spanked by parents. I know because I saw them swat the kid.

If they grow up getting spanked....and are not otherwise disciplined....they have learned violence is an acceptable response to conflict AND theyve learned to be dishonest. Obviously not everyone ends up the same....we are individuals. But the things we learn as children are hard to unlearn later if they are toxic.

It gets immediate compliance, but it's not discipline. Disclipine is training and teaching.

You described positive reinforcement and it really is the most effective discipline. Rewarding good behaviour, complimenting good behavior....heads off a lot of undesirable behaviour.  And yeah removing or softening consequences for bad behavior and mistakes is also positive reinforcement and you definately dont want to reinforce that.  It can be hard though.

I also did time outs, removing priviledges and having them "earn" them back with extra chores. It's a bit harder with my youngest because shes the baby and everyone is wrapped around her devious finger.

The issue with Gen Z isnt that they were not spanked. The problem is they have not been disciplined.  I know everyone knocks the generation after their own....I'm not trying to do that. But I have been completely floored by the attitudes I've seen from kids in my daughters generation.  Schools dont even discipline kids anymore and they pass them through no matter what.  There are no real consequences for anything.

My husband and I clash at times when it comes to discipline. My older girls tell me i went soft.

I probably have now that i have another parent with me to share these issues with. I can do the "i will call dad!" Lol.

I feel bad and cave in. Dad won't.

It takes a lot of pressure off when you can blame dad

Like "Sorry kiddo....even if I wanted to, dad said no" lol

It does! They'll bug me to no end. Dad tho? One no is enough lol

Hahahah, you fuckers!!!!

I went through that shit!!! My wife always threatening my son with "you wait til your Dad gets home!" or "Im on the phone with your DAD! Want me to tell him how you being!" and shit like that lol. THEN, when I punish, they would unpunish while I was gone!!! Like WTF!!! You want him to act right or not! Cause he aint gonna respect you when you pull that weak ass shit! They think "I can do what I want, Mom lets me". At least from my experience lol. Later in life, he would NEVER listen to her! ALWAYS listened to me! He respected me. He didnt go around sneaking, cause he KNEW, I had a photographic memory, and he couldnt get away with shit lol. No matter what, I always caught him lol. He would tell his friends "bro, you dont understand, my Dad ALWAYS figures shit out!" lolol.

To be clear, he got his beatings early on, and later only got beatings for something REALLY bad. Otherwise, he simply got grounded. BUT, Mom would unground him, earning her "early" favortism, but later... I earned more respect. Also, he didnt get punished not even close to half of what I did, not even a quarter! And I was a good fucking kid!!!

Beat their ass Erica!!!  ac_beating

That doesn't work on children let alone adults.

Mine turned out great

Thats the problem with kids these days, aint getting their asses beat enough!

My Mom would beat me with a belt, a switch, a fly swatter, a flip flop, or the worst... a hair brush!!!

Im sweeter than the girl that is sweeter than sugar  ac_dance

I know all about that. My old man would beat me and my brother black and blue if we didn't do our chores around the farm. My sisters didn't get whooped, and my mom didn't hit us. Then I turned seventeen and I got into it with that old Ukrainian fucker. I moved out for a while, and then moved back, both us having new respect for each other.

I divorced my first wife when my boy was really young. I was living and working all over the frickin world. I would see him about once a year on a trip to Canada, My only presence in his life was money. So, only seeing him about three weeks a year and all at once, I didn't smack him.

I was raised by my grandma and she would use this cheap yellow fly swatter as a spanking tool.

I also would get "switched" with thin smaller tree branches off the birch tree.

It was definately child abuse but they meant well. That's just how that generation was.

Now that I think about it...

I was raised by my Great Grandparents, and my Great Aunt, until I was 5, when my mom took me back. I dont recall any of them laying a hand on me. My mom did, and my step dad did. My punishment by the Greats was to go to my room and sit on the bed.

Well....my grandma and my great aunt (her sister) whooped my ass a few times.

I didnt get it a lot and each time I had done something wrong. Intentionally.

You know, my grandma was the warmest sweetest person.

....everyone that knew her LOVED her.

But that woman was violent as fuck  ac_toofunny

Anytime I got into a fight with a neighborhood kid and beat the piss out of them, my grandma was proud of it LOL. She didnt even wait to find out what happened. She just assumed if I got violent it was warranted. And to fair....it WAS. But still, she didnt check lol.

Until I was 13ish we lived in a more poor metro Detroit area in Michigan. So it wasnt like was bullying the normal middle class suburban kids....i was street brawling with other poor ones lol.

 You know how that is.

My grandma was short. We are all short women. She had a stool she specifically used for fighting with my grandfather because she wanted to make sure she could look him the eye on even ground so he "didnt get any funny ideas"  ac_toofunny

My grandmother's parents came here on a boat from Ireland....if that explains anything lol. She grew up on farm with a slaughter house in Oxford Michigan....which is completely different now. That's actually where that school shooting in MI happened.

That kind of thing unheard of during my time.

When I got divorced, my ex and my daughter moved to my ex home city in another state

Her brother also lives there, they have a daughter 3 years younger than mine, so she's 12 and my daughter is 15 by now

They had a lot of difficult to conceive. They had a baby girl who was born with little heart syndrome and she survived for only 6 months, it was a huge blow to the whole family.

A few years later their daughter was born and they spoiled her immensely, after all, that child was like a miracle to them.

Well, the little girl was always problematic, and considering the mother's antics, it's not a surprise.

My daughter was already having problems with her. First, it were the pranks. In the begin of this year, my daughter calls me and tells me that her cousin was smoking e-cigarettes'. At 11 years old.

And she had told her mother, who told her brother. When he confronted his daughter, first she said my daughter was lying and then said it was my kid who had given it to her.

Needless to say he came back with that bullshit to my ex who knew it was an outright lie.

He probably knew, but he's been so pussified by his wife and daughter, he preferred to turn his back on my ex-wife and my daughter to stay on their side.

Little girls need more hugs than little boys do.

The need to sit on Odis lap is constant too.

Have to limit the hugs to 10 per day.

Then its like "why dont you wanna hug me?" and feelings hurt.

Nope, didn't do what we said and now she thinks she's going to get me to take her to her new hospital job. Sorry, gas is way to high and I'm not no fucking taxi.

Ok, rant over.

If you stop driving her around would that not give her a greater desire to pursue getting a Drivers license?

That is odd as well esp. with the offer of pretty decent used car/truck  that's paid for would also be a motivator.... Since  sure my dad taught me how to drive when I was young  but I still had to work after school and on weekends  at a min wage job to afford to get a POS beater car but I learned alot about  DIY car repairs and how to save.

For a young driver with a DL a great first vehicle would be a late 90's-early 00's Jeep Cherokee XJ with a 5-speed Manual and the 4.0L Inline-6 that way today none of their friends could drive it and it is super easy and cheap to fix and maintain and you can visit some neat places to go camping.

I haven't see a Lada on the roads here in over twenty years.

But will you stick to your guns or give in?

For a young driver with a DL a great first vehicle would be a late 90's-early 00's Jeep Cherokee XJ with a 5-speed Manual and the 4.0L Inline-6 that way today none of their friends could drive it and it is super easy and cheap to fix and maintain and you can visit some neat places to go camping.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3STMfI_PS4Q

Yep, it was a great car to have to go around checking job sites, carrying tools and whatnot

When I got to the US in 1999 I couldn't believe the cars that were considered "average" there. Not to mention all the extras I had never seen here.

Back in the 90's, the only car worth noting in terms of engine was the Chev Opala 6-cyl 4.1 liters

The standard on top cars was 2.0 liters, 2.5 at most.

The we had the Chevy Omega 3.0 that substituted the Opala after 1996

Between gas prices and terrible roads, we had to content with what they made here. But considering how people drive here, it's better that most of our vehicles have less than 80 hp.

Otherwise, you'd better be filthy rich to buy an import.

We have plenty of Asian cars here, Hondas and Toyotas are considered luxury here

We have many assembly lines here. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki and even Mitsubishi

Although some focus more on motorcycles, like Honda

Many Hyundai too

A Lincoln Town Car or the Mark VIII series of the 90's-early 00's were the last of the last of the true Lincoln full size V8 Rear wheel Drive luxury Cars now most people think of the Navigator Full-Size SUV which it is really just an Ford F150 underneath which may be a good thing IMO.

Heck even today a Lincoln town car is a solid true full size car that is super reliable.

Ah, I see.
