Title: St. Patrick's Day
Post by: Anonymous on March 16, 2014, 07:13:55 PM
Are any posters Irish or part Irish?

What does the day mean to you?

Is it only an excuse to drink or is there more to the day for you?

Its honouring their heritage. Connecting them to the mother continent.

Many of you "colonials" like to track down your roots... Theres nothing quite like it in the "original" continent.

It's an excuse to party and nothing wrong with that either.

I don't like Guinness very much. It's just too heavy. Give me a tasty lager on tap anyday. Harp is the best Irish beer I have tried.

A few years ago I went to O'Byrne's pub on Whyte Ave for St. Paddy's. Packed to the max. Had some Irish stew and it wasn't half bad.

If you decide to wear some green today in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, I hope it safe and enjoyable for you.

Growing up in my house we always had lots of that crap around. My mom worked and mornings were hectic so cereal was the quickest and easiest thing to grab. My sister and brother liked the surgery ones so as a majority rule we always had them around. I think all that sugary breakfast cereal I ate was a major contributor to why by the 8th grade I weighed over 200lbs.

Nowadays as an adult who has learned a thing or two, in my house that crap is forbidden. Any cereal in my house consists of either plain rice based cereal, whole grains cereals, or hot oatmeal.

The point is that when you call the regular "flashing" gay pride parade... It suddenly becomes acceptable.

And I wouldnt call the cops if some1 throws shit on me.. I would be really upset for awhile if I didnt turn the "artist" into a mess right on the scene.

I'm going to have to call you ignorants out.  I've asked multiple times if any of you have actually been to a Pride Parade in person.  I'm going to take it the answer is no.  It's very similar to any other parade I've been to.  It's not awash with nudity.  When I went, the worst I saw was some guys in briefs (underwear).  To put it into perspective, that's pretty much the same thing the guys in my swim club wore on our float in our city parade.

If you don't know WTF you are talking about, get educated or just shut the fuck up.

I have to concur with you RW. I know several gay men as well and they are all decent people who lead decent lives. I have no problem hanging out with them, sharing a meal or allowing my childern to be around them.

I still don't get this "gay lifestyle" shit.  Wtf does that even mean?!

No one has to accept their "deviancy".  They just to not treat them like lesser human beings for being attracted to the same sex.  Simple.

ok i will give you a couple of points....those being,  no one should be treated as a lesser human being or discriminated against as a result of their sexual orientation or choice of orientation.....and yes women's studies is offensive ......

as far as the gay lifestyle goes  i will let you figure it out......if you are unwilling to accept the medical literature or comparative studies on the differences in sexual contacts and spread of diseases among practicing  homos or hetros so be it....you are free to believe as you wish......but i would refrain from calling other people ignorant who know more about the subject than you do.....

deviancy is simple a deviation from the norm.....anything that affects only 2-3% of any population is by definition statistically abnormal...thus it is a deviant....the percentages of gays in any given population are statistically in line with many other abnormalities from diseases to disfigurations to good baseball players.......they are not, nor ever can be, equals to or the same as, the other 97% of the population.....

i was about to give you a treatise on gay marriage but i feel we have probably beat this subject to death......when sanity returns to the civilized world i will still be here (i hope) to put the pieces back together again......cheerio

Why don't homos hold their nudity and simulated sex exhibitionism(parade) in a private hall and charge admission to consenting adults who actually want to see that shit? Public streets in daytime is no place for that.

Good baseball players are abnormal deviants? Maybe they were just born that way and some people like playing baseball.

Athletes are something to look up to but they are pulling some ridiculous salaries... Like Tiger Woods.. The dude is a kazillionaire for swinging a small ball.

He aint exactly a rolemodel due to his ball swinging in his private time also.

Well said but that being the case, I believe that an arts or humanities degree as a "major" is a viable path toward employment for limited applications only. Most of the kids studying these degrees are merely hiding out from the real world, on their parent's dime for 4 or sometimes more years.

A friend of mine has a daughter that graduated with an anthropology degree 4 years ago. Since graduation she has worked several retail jobs and has waited table's part time, why; because her degree is basically useless in the real world. For that degree to even have a ghost of a chance at being useful she will have to go on to her masters and possibly even her doctorate. Even then her employment opportunities based on her degree will be very finite. It also doesn't help that since going to college this girl has garnered a crapload of very visible garish tats and a plethora of facial piercings. She was once an attractive girl who now looks like graffiti covered rack of nuts and bolts.

The really sad part is her family took out a second mortgage to send her to NYU and both her and her family didn't even have the foresight to realize that the degree she was pursuing was a 100 thousand dollar anchor.

You have to wonder what goes thru some people's minds when making important decisions that will affect their lives. But then again anyone who goes to or sends their kid to a high priced Univ and chases an anthropology degree in the hopes of getting a job upon graduation, can't have much going thru their minds in the first place.

I don't even consider those pieces of paper a degree. As we can see from your niece the only occupation those wastes of time prepare one for is lunatic asshole, but there seems to be far more applicants for those positions than our economy needs.

The world would be one sterile, boring place without arts degree grads.

It also doesn't help that since going to college this girl has garnered a crapload of visible tats and a plethora of facial piercings.

But then again anyone who goes to or sends their kid to a high priced Univ and chases an anthropology degree in the hopes of getting a job upon graduation, can't have much going thru their minds in the first place.

as is the case i pretty much always agree with Miss Renee......truthfully the world would be a boring place if it was full of MBA's and Engineers.......but it is not possible to justify putting yourself in debt to the tune of 100k or more just for the privilege of attending a university.....couldn't you have just borrowed the books and gone to the library.....??????

of course in canada  close to 75% of a university degree is paid for by the taxpayers so it is no big deal to these kids.......so what if the degree is more than useless....someone else is paying for it...even then my real issue with that is the incompetence of the teaching profession and their eco-enviro-antibusness indoctrination of uneducated young minds is both dangerous and damaging as these grads are basically useless for the rest of their lives.......i liken it to Hitler youth....those that are still alive today....70 years after the war still are believers......indoctrinations absorbed during youth rarely are overcome......

You have hit another issue that is much more disturbing than a useless arts degree and that is the sociopolitical indoctrination of our youth. I'm not sure how it is in Canada but in the US progressives have found a very insidious way of achieving their agenda. They have taken to hiding out in our colleges and universities masquerading as educators. The reality is that have no desire to educate because an educated free thinking populace is detrimental to their cause. Their true aim is to brainwash the younger generation and indoctrinate them into their ideology. This way they can effect elections, change cultural and societal norms and essentially change the very fabric and face of the US. Thankfully the problem they are running into at this point is that after graduation many young people are sadly discovering that everything they were told by these prog weasels was basically a lie. There are no jobs for them because the prog politicians who are currently in power have stagnated the US economy with their policies so badly that it has become a sinking ship.

Furthermore the very wealthy in America (whom the progs spend endless hours demonizing) are and have done quite well for themselves under the progressive's watch these past 6 years. A lot of people in the US are waking up to this far left political charade the exact same way that they did at the end of the 1970s and they don't like what they see and nor do they like what the future looks to be bringing.

up and until the 1990's approximately 75% of the costs of a university education was picked up by the taxpayers......currently it ranges from 50% to 75% depending on how enlightened the province you live in happens to be.......they latest stats i have read for BC put the taxpayers on the hook for 60% of the cost.....this does not take into account if students win scholarships, bursaries etc.....

my second daughter (yes i am proud) graduated tops in her class in the international baccalaureate program in high school....she went to Queens became a doctor and now practices (research) in Edmonton....and yes i am very proud of her....but my point here is, her degrees cost us basically nothing as she was eligible for many many scholarships and she was from Alberta which rebates most tuition fees no matter where you go, as long as your marks are high enough.......great system (seriously)

i could not say it any better and will only add that the leftist infiltration into centers of education and the socialist indoctrination of young minds, is worse in Canada by factors of 10.....Canada was ground zero for the era of progressive insanity we now live in.....my son actually had to change universities ...he wanted to get a degree in poli sci and go into politics...but all his profs were naxi feminists and when he openly challenged their course materials and political philosophy they made it impossible for him to continue...ok by me as he took a business program and now runs a fairly large publicly traded business in Calgary.....

Many of the states here in the US work in similar fashion. If you have the grades and you are a full time resident of the state and you are going to a state sponsored school, you go to school for next to nothing. But it only works for state sponsored colleges and universities. Private institutions you are on the hook to either pay the full boat or find scholarships or apply for student loans. Many of the loans are federally funded but you are still required to pay them back and at ridiculous interest rates I might add. The only bright spot is that millions in scholarship money goes un-awarded every year. All one needs to do is chase it down but unfortunately it is almost a 24/7 endeavor.

The average student coming out of a 4 year college in the US today has about 30 to 40 grand hanging on their ass. If you go on to a degree that is more than 4 years expect to be anywhere from 50 to 100 thousand in debt. Currently the default rate on student loans is enormous because kids coming out of college have very few employment opportunities. So if you have a BS in something ridiculous like art history expect to be pumping gas or flipping burgers as a career for some time to come.

We are now developing an entire generation of college graduates who if lucky enough to get a job, say the same thing every day:

"Welcome to McDonalds, may I take your order?"

i did not post any of the studies i have read but the information is readily available online.........the theory as proposed is that by subsidizing a university education you more than make up for it in taxes paid over the persons life time.....i'm not sure if i buy that........for three reasons..

1. most of the serious people would still go to university and pay for it themselves as they realize the value of a professional degree.

2. It encourages people to go and get useless degrees, waste taxpayers money, and still end up working in low paying jobs because their degrees are worthless...thus paying less taxes than they would have had they started working directly after high school.

3.The personal philosophy of ..if you are not willing to pay for your kids education why the hell should i.

I read some studies.

It's not so much that degrees are worthless but industry standards are such that a bachelor's degree has become the minimum requirement for jobs that didn't used to require one.  Like if you want to be a receptionist, or a secretary you better have a post secondary degree.  Want a monkey job doing data entry?  Better have a degree.  It's ridiculous.

A Mc Job is about the only one you don't need a fricken degree for.

That's the other problem, a BS is now basically needed for what used to be entry level HS education jobs (which as you say is absolutely ridiculous). Unfortunately a lot of college's grads today don't want to work the 25,000 dollar a year entry level jobs because they were told that upon graduation they would be worth so much more.

It's not their fault that they were lied to but a little bit of realism is needed on their part. The employment world has changed dramatically in recent years and people need to realize that or they will end up mopping floors and washing windows for a living.

In Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and parts of BC, the demand for most journeymen tradespeople far exceeds the supply. Many are able to negotiate perks almost unheard of in other occupations.

What needs to change is the perception of the trades. East Asian parents in particular view the trades as unacceptable occupations for their kids.

The study that says that the oilsands pays $100/hr vs. $50/hr in auto manufacturing includes more than just base hourly wages.

There isn't a whole lot of difference nowadays but years ago as bad as British food can be, Irish food was way worse. Lots of bland boiled meats with cabbage, potatoes and parsnips, BLEECH! For many years boiled potatoes were a staple because they were cheap and can feed large families.

But there are some decent dishes like Dublin Coddle, steak and Guinness pie and lamb stew. Good soda bread is one of my faves as well. Some of the desserts aren't bad either. My mom makes an Irish whiskey cake that's very good.

Also I like a good hard Irish cheddar with a few beers.
