reading a couple of Gary Jokes post made me think of something.......it seems a common refrain for canadian born canadians to complain about immigrants and the "shitholes" they come from...why immigrants aren't more grateful to just "be here" let alone be more deferential to "real canadians".....so it got me thinking about my own experiences over seas....i probably felt like that at one time as well and truly there are shitholes located around the globe.....but the vast majority of places i have traveled to and/or lived in are full of nice, wonderful people with the same aspirations as everyone else.......who knows why some one wants to emigrate....could be financial, cultural, educational or a million other reasons...probably the same reason people have moved around for generations......in my case, i expected to find a backwater of the worlds unwashed who lived like untamed savages and could use my western gained knowledge to set them right......what i found was a group of people so far ahead of us culturally, technologically, socially and many many other ways that i became somewhat in awe of them.....it came to the point where friends would pressure me to take them with me back to Canada for a vacation and i would make excuses why not too....it was not because i didn't like them, it was because i was embarrassed that their perception of North America was so far beyond the reality i couldn't do it.....they had seen it's riches on TV for decades and how could i show them how simply ordinary it is......in their country most of the main buildings are less than 30 years old.....big wide new roadways are everywhere....untra modern subways that are hard to describe...and on and on it goes.....in canada a lot of the buildings are old and decrepit........infrastructure if failing or non-existent and people are rude...... i know i am referring mainly to the Asian tigers and really there are no nice places in Africa and few in South America but in general the people from Asia that come here to educate their kids and make a life are relatively well off, highly educated, confident and don't need or desire to take shit from some redneck miscreant grade 10 dropout who thinks they are superior....i too think they should learn english and try and fit in with local culture...but as one who has struggled to learn local languages i can tell you it is not easy for someone over 40 to become fluent...it requires many years of hard work......i love the fact that canada has so many different faces.....foods....cultures and accents.......sure some immigrants cause problems.... have a different and sometimes abrasive attitude ....big deal....get over it....
the one caveat i have is regarding all the muslim immigrants that arrive each year....i know lots of them, have worked with lots of muslims.....have never had a problem with any one.....but there is a little voice in my head that says....at some point we will pay a price for this...i hope that is not true

I agree, preceptions are wrong on both sides of the pond. I have met so many East Asians in Asia that have a completely false impression of what life in Canada is all about Likewise, the Spartacus type idiots have no idea about why people emigrate.
Keep em coming.

I too share your concern about Islam. That ideology is incompatible with liberal Western values. Let's be honest here, the Quran IS a hate book.
People that openly declare they follow the teachings of that hate literature should not be given a travel visa for Canada let alone be allowed to immigrate here.

Very interesting thoughts you have posted here about the immigrant experience Obvious Li..
My family are immigrants and we have tried to integrate while maintaining our Taiwanese cultural heritage..
My parents can speak English, but they would prefer to speak Mandarin or the Taiwanese dialect..
With immigration, I feel the real benefit to Canada comes with the second generation which speaks native level English and is fully bicultural.
You morons. I never said that I am against immigration. I speak fluent Cantonese and mandarin and know all too well how alarmed Chinese immigrants get when they find out I speak Chinese ( especially Cantonese ) while Filipinos love it that I speak tagalog. I also speak Indonesian and and if the Indonesians and Malaysian that I have met that are here also really liked that I speak bahasa . Canada needs immigrants but those who come here and support their religion or nation taking over and see Canada and Canadians as a people and country to cheat quite simply I believe donèt deserve Canadian citizenship. I like having Filipinos everywhere. They make superior immigrants. They like Canada, Canadians and want to be Canadian.

in principle i agree with you about immigrants who come here and cheat the system.......however, i blame the current situation on weak and cowardly government officials and laws that have no enforcement capabilities...in my experience race has no currency when it comes to cheating the system...it is up to the people we elect to ensure the opportunities to cheat are minimal and when cheaters are caught dealt with appropriately......we do not do that now.... :ugeek:

I don't know how widespread abuse is, but I don't believe race has anything to do with it..
If there are more people from China and India who breaching the spirit of our immigration rules, it is only because they are the two most populous nations in the world.

In all fairness to the feds they have made changes to the refugee system. Does it go far enough? No, but it is more than previous governments have done to right an invitation for abuse.

Gary - I didn't give a rat's ass.
My brother took a class before going to China to teach English and minored in it in university after he got back. He reads, writes and speaks it. I love the look on Chinese people's faces when he says something and they turn around and see this blue eyed white boy. It's such a hoot!

Yeah, I remember I caught her in one fib about Korea. She claimed how widespread tattooing is in Korea and one of her students showed her their tattoo. It's considered a medical procedure in South Korea and they prosecute tattoo artists. The chances of a tattoo artist risking jail by tattooing a kid seems remote.

You are making the same mistake Romero made. There are no laws about having tattoos, but who can do them is quite another matter.
Quote
Sitting in an underground tattoo parlor with his arms folded across his chest, 37-year-old tattooist Kang Un explains why things are so. There are no laws specifically about tattooing in South Korea, but medical laws state that only doctors can practice the act of penetrating someone's skin with a needle.
In other words, to be a tattooist in Korea, you must hold a doctor's license.http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/south-korea/090717/tattoos-underground

She wasn't lying! It's still taboo, but we know for a fact that some Korean kids get tattoos. It's no shocking surprise that she saw just one single kid with one. The student knew ghost was cool with it so she was kinda excited to show her.
It says that in the article but goes on to say they are popping up elsewhere and shutting them down isn't really enforced.

It's still illegal, though that will probably change.

As a result, the tattoo industry lurks underground. Most parlors have unmarked fronts to avoid detection by police, who have raided the shops to confiscate tattoo machines and fine proprietors as much as $10,000.

No profession tattoo artist is going to risk their livelihoods by tattooing a kid. If the student had one he/she got it abroad or a friend did it.

Not much IS enforced in Korea until a complaint is made.
So in other words what she claimed could be true.

Ink Bomb Explodes in Seoul
Hard to believe, but just a couple of years ago, kids in Korea were still going to jail for tattooing and getting tattooed. But when things change in Korea, they do change quickly.
If you want to check out the state of the ink scene, this weekend features a two-day conference for the tattoo arts, going on at Platoon Kunsthalle in Gangnam. Here is what the organizers have to say:
Ink Bomb International Tattoo Convention is the biggest tattoo convention in Korea, bringing in artists from Japan and the U.S., as well many from the peninsula. Now in its second year, 2010′s event promises to be bigger and better than last year, having upgraded to a larger venue and with a huge roster of tattooists coming to participate.
From 1 pm until 9 pm on July 16th, and 1 pm until the party ends on the 17th, Platoon Kunsthalle in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu (near Dosan 4-geori) will be the place to be to meet tattooists, check out their portfolios, and even get ink done on-site!

It's still kinda underground, but it is becoming quite popular.

Marijuana is becoming popular too, but don't get caught with it in Korea. I believe the laws will lighten up about both in the future, but for now tattooing is a medical procedure and weed is the devil's cigarettes.

in all the years i lived there i only saw one homeless person..it was on the way to lunch and he was sleeping on the street...by the time lunch was over he was gone......no tattoos......no dope although it had to be around....no openly gay people although that has changed somewhat in the last few years

Homelessness seems to be less of a problem in Taipei, Tainan and Kaoshiung too compared to Canadian cities.

Strangely, I saw a fair number of street people around the subways in Japan.

funny you should mention that....(this is a true story)...
i was on a three day nightclub crawl with some pals in Itaewon one time and about 3:00 A.M on day three i figured i better go home or the dragon was about to have one of her episodes, so off i go...once i am outside i realize i have no money left and i need to get a taxi home...so i go to the nearest subway because i know they have bank machines there......i go down a long set of stairs/escalators to the main floor which as you know is huge and full of small food stalls etc.......anyway as i am going down i realize it is dark as shit except for the small lights over the exits so i can barely see...when i get down there the entire floor is covered with bodies sleeping there...i guestimate hundreds....i could hardly walk around them to get to the bank machine and withdraw $200....i was a white man in a suit with a bank card and i could see many of them looking at me and guessed what they were thinking......when i got back to the stairs four (believe it or not) black guys blocked my way, pulled a knife and demanded my cash.....we had a bit of a go around and i ended up giving them my cash except for taxi money....that i told them would not fucking happen under any circumstances (yes i was a bit drunk).........in any case i tell this story merely to illustrate that there probably is an underground of homeless, alcoholic people that hide during the day but gather in places like subways at night to sleep etc.......the police in Korea would never allow them to be seen in public. All the time i was in Tokyo same story..i imagine they are there somewhere you just never see them.
You Obviously started this thread with some completely incorrect assumptions on what I believe and threw some name calling to fit in with you wrong assumptions.
